“A dream in Bruges”
Reviewed 26 May 2008

We needed 5 visits to beloved Bruges to finally find our perfect place to stay. We stayed in some fancy 4-star hotels in Bruges but none of them could ever compare to this B&B. Words can not describe the atmosphere of this beautiful B&B. Entering the house you are overwhelmed by its beauty. Although you feel like stepping back in time there is also a wonderful contemporary feel to it. And there is Caroline to greet you and you instantly feel warm and welcome. You enter the garden which backs onto one of the most beautiful canals in Bruges and you are asking yourselve how you would ever manage to leave this place!

Last week my wife and I returned from a 2-week trip to Belgium and The Netherlands during which time we stayed 4 nights at Cote Canal/Huyze Hertsberger in Bruges. The posts on this message board were critical in our decision to stay there. We could not have been more pleased. What’s not to like? An enchanting city, an historic B&B on a canal, and best of all Caroline who went well beyond our expectations to make our stay the very best.

If you try to imagine the kind of person who would make the ideal proprietor of a B&B, you would imagine someone like Caroline. She has thought of all the details to make staying here memorable. She grew up in Bruges; so she knows it well and likes to point out things to see and do. She and Henk combined their talents to make breakfast a delight as well. We especially liked the bread, muesli, and cheese.

We stayed in the Clair de Lune suite which is a large upstairs room in this building that was built between 1690 and 1700. It has been in Caroline’s family for generations. Although she had planned for years to open a B&B in France, circumstances led her back to Bruges and the home that had been her aunt’s. She worked on the home 7 years before opening it as a B&B 3 years ago.

The setting is along a quiet canal. It was cool while we were there, but in warmer weather it would be wonderful to sit in the garden looking out on the canal. As a sidelight, the outside of Caroline’s own quarters and her dog appear briefly in the movie In Bruges.

We are delighted to recommend Cote Canal and Caroline to all who are interested in a marvelous B&B in the very romantic setting of Bruges.

  • Disliked — Nothing; we liked everything.

We have just returned from our first visit to the beautiful city of Bruges. We feel so privileged to have stayed at this wonderful guest house for the last three nights. The owner Caroline is so warm and welcoming and made our stay very special. The website really does not prepare you for what a fabulous place this is. Our room was huge and full of little details that tell you the owners really care about the welfare of their guests. Although the house is right in the centre of Bruges, you would not know it and there is an air of tranquility throughout. We were blessed with really good weather during our stay and it was a real pleasure to be able to eat breakfast al fresco sat by the side of the canal each morning. The garden was also a lovely oasis to retreat to after a day of sightseeing. We would love to return again one day and just hope that the excellent reviews that Caroline deservedly attracts on this site will not mean that we can't get in!!

Bruges was our final stop in a 10-day trip to Belgium and France. We stayed two nights at Cote Canal and it was just wonderful. Caroline and Hank were so hospitable and kind, their inn is elegant and Bruges couldn't have been more picturesque. The inn, built in 1690, has been in Caroline's family for 5 generations and it has been lovingly restored and beautifully furnished. As the name implies, the home sits on the canal, with a charming private garden in between. The rooms have full view of the garden and canal, as does the lovely breakfast room. It rained off and on during our stay, and it was nice to be able to walk throughout the town and then take a break in our room, the inn being located right near the center of the old town. We did walk from the train station upon arrival, it isn't too far, but the charming cobblestone streets were a little noisy with our wheeled suitcases. We had an early train out, so Caroline kindly arranged our taxi for the return trip. She was even nice enough to get up extra early (6:30 am) and provide a quick breakfast for us to take before we left -- though we insisted that we didn't expect that at such an early hour. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to go back someday.

We returned yesterday from one of the best short breaks we have ever experienced. My husband and I took our elderley mums to Bruges for three nights/four days, and could not believe our good fortune when we were greeted by Caroline at the Cote Canal.
Everything there is just so beautiful, from the wonderful architecture of the house, the location on the canal with its preety gardens, the fresh stylish decor, the comfortable and tasteful furnishings, the delightful breakfasts, the warmth and hospitality of the hosts - the list is endless.......
We took two rooms, my husband and I stayed in the vaulted top floor suite with amazing views of the canal, whilst our mothers took a charming first floor suite with two lovely bedrooms divided by huge double doors.Cote Canal more than deserves its #1slot as Top Guest House in Bruges - no doubt next time we will book early as I think i is set to become even MORE popular once readers see what guests have to say about it.
You will LOVE it, I promise

My husband and I just returned from a stay in magical Bruges. It was our first time in this charming village and literally fell in Love. As frequent travellers we can tell you that This B and B was one of the BEST we have ever stayed in anywhere in the world. Caroline (the owner) is warm, knowledgable, and makes you truly feel like family. We happen to be in Bruges mid week before 'the season' was in full force and Caroline was able to spend a good deal of time with us regalling us with stories of growing up in Bruges, and the surrounding area. Coming from a week in Amsterdam, where the night does not begin until 10pm....here in Bruges the sidewalk rolls up by 9:00pm just upon our arrival on a sunday night. We were starving and had not eaten dinner yet....Caroline got on the phone with a friend of hers, at Diligence Restaurant and arranged to have them stay open for us to get a superb meal....and great conversation. We enjoyed the company and food so much that we chose to return to Diligence for a second night ! Have a glass of wine with owners Anita and Patrick. Back at Cote Canal We finally went to bed, exhausted and had an amazing night sleep in one of the upstairs bedrooms.....this place was incredible. ( if you have stayed in accomodations thruout europe you know they are generally VERY modest and tiny compared to US standards) This room was HUGE with vaulted wood beamed ceilings, unbelievalbly decorated with all modern ammenities, even a LOFT with beds on a second level, and views of the canal that are spectacular, morning and evening. We just cant say enough about our stay at Huyze Hertsberg/ Cote Canal and the wonderful Caroline........we would recommend this b and b without reservation. Robin and Tom
ps. give a great big kiss to Carolines pride and joy her oversized white Labrador movie star named Fidel....as in "infidel" !!!

My wife and chose to stay in Bruge based upon the esteemed opines of our fellow "trip advisors" and certainly appreciate the advise given. This is the definition of what a bed and breakfast should aspire to be. Great service, attention to detail, and genuine concern over the needs of travelers from the US are the hallmarks of this superior b&b. Bruge was the highlight of our European vacation, and the one place I hope to return to and spend more time. From the impressive antiquties to the stunning views of the canals of Bruge, this place has it all. Book it before "the secret is out" of how wonderful this b&b truly is....Randy Hill.
