Just a short walk from the Bruges town square, where all restaurants are at best mediocre, this one is a gem. It is operated by a man and his wife, who is, by the way, an excellent chef. We picked it on our hotelier's recommendation as one of his local favorites, and his taste proved to be spot on. We had a very enjoyable dining experience, seated where we could see all of the work taking place in the kitchen, receiving carefully prepared and unique food, coupled with an excellent Belgian beer. What more could you want?

The service here is slow - there is one man (apparently the owner) serving about 20 tables. My understanding is that there is only one cook too - his wife apparently.

Our starters were both salads but were pleasant and well made with fresh ingredients.

Our mains impressed less - a pasta dish was heavy and too salty and a stir fry lacked interest.

Desserts were fine but nothing particularly special.

A bottle of red wine was very expensive (over 3 times retail price) and served cold (as in, from a fridge) with no comment or apology.

The people who run this place seem very nice and well meaning but we were a bit unimpressed and felt let down by the very slow service and cold red wine. At cheaper prices, these faults could have been tolerated but this place is pricey (as others have noted).

Overall impression: could (easily) be doing this better.

Been here once because a friend told me it was a good restaurant. Food is nice and tasty but not worth the price they ask for it. Very expensive for pasta's and salads...

In a city of very good to excellent restaurants we thought Den Amand stood out for the excellence of it's food & service together with the friendliness, humour & warmth of the staff. It's owned and run by lovely people who care about what they do. A really lovely eating experience and I deeply regret Den Amand is not in my Cheshire village. I'd eat there all the time. Highly recommended!

This restaurant was recommended by our B&B, and wow am I glad we listened! This is the first place we've eaten in Belgium where we have had (and wanted to have) a starter, main, and dessert! The portions are more than generous, and even though I was feeling full at the end, I still wanted to lick my plate! Try one of their "spring rolls" - they aren't really spring rolls, but that is the best descriptor for them, and they are delicious. Hubby had one of their specials and really enjoyed it as well. And if you love chocolate, definitely go for the Chocolate Fantasy - basically a small portion of each of their chocolate desserts on one plate - definitely enough to share.

A tip - while it was not busy when we were there, it is a very small restaurant that only seats about 20, and can apparently get quite busy at times, so it is a good idea to reserve.
