“Great rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2011

Booked in advance and saved on room rate. Lovely well presented room.
Only complaint is that checkin and check out can be slow. They have 2 desk and on arrival they spend alot of time with each guest discussing the town etc. Once the queue is 2 deep you know you will be there a long time.
Recommend.

The fact we were upgraded from a deluxe to a Junior Suite overlooking the Garden without asking may shade this review.
However the hotel staff could not have been more polite and helpful.
Stunning Hotel at night and great location for an abundance of restaurants.
If a deal was available and you could afford it try a Junior suite.
If you like this Hotel then you would enjoy the Cafedral and Park restaurants

We stayed one night in a superior room.

The plus:
- clean
- friendly personnel
- cosy bar (try the Kempinski Royal Sekt sparkling wine)
- spa
- the prestige of staying in the old Dukes of Burgundy's palace

The minus:
- paying wifi
- very average breakfast (hearthy and varied but average quality and not really tasty)

A very excellent hotel that must be on everybodies list. But beware. I had lunch there on 20/2/2011 and ordered a starter and 6 oysters. The oysters were served warm, albeit on a plate of ice and showed signs of having been opened for a while. I ate 4 of the 6 before concluding that these were not good oysters! Within 5 hours I was fighting stomach cramps and vomiting. Much worse was to follow. Inevitably when phoning the hotel and asking to whom to direct a complaint I was told 'Oh that's a surprise sir you are the only complaint'. The inevitable corproate whitewash. I object strongly to being poisoned, however prestigious the establishment may be. Enjoy your stay but treat the restaurant with caution! At the point of writing this my throat remains sore form vomiting!

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your valuable comments.

After inspection of the oysters at the hotel and with the supplier by the federal agency for the safety of the food chain (FASFC), they were free of any irregularities or health hazards.

Rest assured our oysters are of the highest and freshest quality available in our region.

With kind regards,

The Kempinski Hotel Dukes' Palace Concierge

Located in the heart of old Bruges, the hotel is in a perfect position from which to explore the city. The hotel is luxurious, without being pretentious. The staff were friendly and attentive, but without being intrusive. I have stayed at many 5* hotels where the service is so formal it's actually uncomfortable - not so at the Dukes' Palace, they have the balance just right! We booked a superior double room in the new part of the building, which was spacious, clean and very comfortable.

I do think for the price, WIFI should be included free, but the cost is made clear in the hotel literature in the room, so we just didn't use it!

I can't comment on the food in the hotel, as we ate elsewhere - there are lots of lovely restaurants around Bruges. I can, however, recommend a drink in the bar to round off your evening - again, friendly and relaxing (oh and the house champagne is very nice!).

The hotel charge an extra 30 euro for breakfast, which we thought was a bit excessive, so we found a lovely cafe to have breakfast in for less than half the price.

All in all though, we had a fantastic stay at the hotel and would recommend it.

I never write hotel reviews but I've been meaning to write this one for weeks now. This hotel experience was abominable. I don't even know where to begin. First of all, the cheap quality of rooms and decor were the standard of a 2 star or even motel quality room. The carpets were scratchy and dirty and they had cheesy and cheap frames museum posters dotted around the hotel and in the rooms. There was no concierge, only two or sometimes even one person at a "reception" desk. They were incredibly uninformed about the city and considering it is one of the smallest little towns to tour about in this was most bewildering and disapointing. Sometimes there were multiple guests waiting to check in while the reception was helping guests with maps, etc which is frustrating and uncomfortable for both sides. I disliked feeling rushed to learn my way and ask for recommendations but of course I'd not feel right holding up the line of weary travelers waiting for rooms. The hotel food was ok but the service was excrutiatingly slow. I can't begin to describe all that went wrong and how sorely angry I felt about our stay last month. A true disapointment in so many ways. If the hotel was 3 stars I would better understand it's shortcomings. My wife and I could not wait to leave after our 4 night stay. Oh, and yes, they do charge for wifi which they don't tell you until you check out. Considering you get free wifi in a standard starbucks this felt like a joke. Honestly, we just looked at each other and laughed. Pathetic.

Great for location, good for service. However, I chose this hotel because of the swimming pool. Imagine my disappointed when we arrived to find the spa was being renovated. "But it was on the internet" they said - firstly I booked through Eurostar, who had no knowledge. When I did go to the web site, it was there - but not on the landing page, not even on the facilities front page, but only when you went to the description of the spa did they tell you that it was out of action (two clicks is the internet equivalent of fine print!). After night 1 the bar was also closed for work. The last hurrah was on the last night, we asked for coffee in the morning. We were pleasantly woken with breakfast. Great, I thought, this to make up for the grumbles - only to find that € 50 was added to the bill! By the way, Kempinski, the days of charging €5 for 64k (yes, you read right) wireless access are long dead!
