“Enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

We chose the hotel Bero as it is voted the number 1 hotel in Ostend on Trip Advisor. As this was an almost last minute booking, we struggled to find any rooms available for this hotel online either direct with the hotel or through a search engine as we were looking for a room for 2 adults and a 15 year old. After emailing the hotel directly, we were pleasantly surprised to be offered a double executive room at Euro 180 per night with the offer of another bed being put into the room for an additional Euro 20 per night. The additional bed provided was comfortable and big enough for my 6ft son !

Reading the reviews it would appear that the Executive rooms are better than the other rooms available as we did not have a problem with the furniture, decor or noise from the room. ( We were in troom 204). The fridge was an added bonus. The only issue we had was the shower as the design meant it was very difficult not to completely flood the bathroom (which was very big). Me and my son both chose to have a bath which also had a shower attachment as it was alot easier !

We found the staff helpful and friendly and all spoke excellent English. The one small problem we had one morning with no hot water was dealt within minutes of us raising the issue

Breakfast was fine - Do not expect a full English - you are not in England, but on the Continent... Plenty of different types of bread and rolls along with cold meat, cheese, fruit and yoghurt.. There was also scrambled and boiled eggs and bacon - although the bacon was often cold - but nothing that would cause me to make a complaint.. we didnt expect to even see bacon available !

The pool was lovely - Would have liked to use the steam room but it did not open until 5pm whch was not a convenient time for us. However the main reason we did not use it was because it is also a nude area. Whilst not prudish we did not feel comfortable in sitting there naked and would have liked there to have been an area for us Brits that would have preferred to wear bathing costumes !

Hotel is in an excellent area. Lots of bars and restaurants practically on the doorstep. Our favourite restaurant was an Italian called Bajatzu. Kids are allowed into the majority of the bars. Less than 5 minutes walk to the beach and around 10 minute walk to the station. Brugges is 10 minutes away by train.

Although a little expensive one could say 'you get what you pay for'. Overall we would recommend this hotel and we would look to stay here again...

Room Tip: Executive rooms appear to be refurbished. We were in room 204 and were not disturbed by outside noi...

Dear Lesley

Thank you for your positive and detailed feedback and for recommending hotel Bero to other travellers. We are happy that we could help you with your reservation and we are pleased to read that you had an enjoyable stay with us.

We really appreciate it that you mentioned the small problem you had at the reception instead of posting it in a negative way on TripAdvisor. This way we are able to solve any inconvenience on the spot so that our guests can further enjoy their stay without any annoyance.

Indeed the sauna's and the steam bath are nude but this is only for hygienic reasons. However, we have bathrobes and bath towels available for the wellness area. Guests who feel a bit uncomfortable sitting naked with other people can also book the wellness area for private use between 9h and 16h30.

Thank you for choosing hotel Bero for your stay in Ostend. We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind regards

First, let me stress how pointless the manager's response will be if he says either, 'You should have booked an Ecology room - they're better' or, 'We're going to refit the rooms next year'. We paid 140 Euros per night here and should be able to expect better (the following week we paid less and got more in London).

The hotel's central location inevitably makes noise an issue. Lack of air conditioning meant that we had to keep the windows open and the resulting noise meant we never slept well. One night it was windy. This made the door to our room rattle so much, I had to wedge it in place with a towel.

There were 'phones in the room but they were completely dead. There was no literature on how to work them or about anything else (e.g. the hotel or the town) in the room at all.

The separate toilet with its ill-fitting concertina door was smelly (as was the sink in the other part of the bathroom) and right next to the bed.

Breakfast was something of a ruck.

We won't be returning, by the way.

Room Tip: You would probably need the best they've got, and do ask to see it first.

Dear guest

Thank you for your feedback regarding our hotel. First of all, as I used to work some years in hotels in London and as I am still visiting your wonderful capital now and then, I find it very hard to believe that, in the middle of the high season, one can find a 4 star hotel in London with a standard rate lower than 140 € per room, per night for a 30m² room inclusive of buffet breakfast and free use of highspeed wifi and leisure facilities (pool, sauna's, steam bath, infra-red beamers, gym).

Further I want to clarify that, in contrary to what you claim, there is no lack of air conditioning in our hotel. Apart from all the public areas (lobby, breakfast room, meeting rooms, bar, whisky lounge, corridors, ...), there is also air conditioning in 68% of our rooms which is probably the highest percentage in all of the hotels in Ostend. But choosing a room without airco and sleeping with the windows open in the middle of the city centre ... sorry, this is never a good idea when you are a light sleeper.

We are very sorry that the phone in your room was out of order and that the toilet was smelly. However we could have helped you better if you would have mentioned it at the reception during your stay instead of posting it on TripAdvisor after your departure.

Best regards

My husband, daughter and I stayed here for 4 nights in July and couldn't fault the hotel on anything. The location is fantastic for everything, promenade, beach, shops, restaurants and pubs. Lovely, clean and fresh interior with a lovely swimming pool area. We had a standard family room and were delighted with the size, yes it could've done with air-conditioning but for the length of time we spent in our room it was by no means a problem to us and we just kept our windows open. Every member of staff we met was professional, friendly, chatty and helpful. There was a great selection at breakfast, enough to fill us up for our day ahead (and even Tetley teabags). We holiday in Belgium a lot and if we find ourselves back in Ostend, we will definitely book to stay here again. Keep up the good work Team Bero.

Ostend is not really a tourist destination, so not unexpectedly, Hotel Bero is not really a tourist hotel – That said, we were staying at the weekend and it did seem to be quite busy
We had booked a Classic Room as I couldn’t work out what extras where available in the more expensive Ecology and Executive rooms. The room was spacious and had an extra bed that could be pulled down from the room. However, it turns out, the extra was for air-conditioning – Hey Ho
There is a lovely swimming pool in the hotel but you need to request towels from reception. Gowns are also available at a charge of €5 plus €25 deposit for gowns.
Breakfast was included in the rate and it was adequate. However, on our 2nd morning we did get into a little bit of trouble. My sister tried toasting bread that was NOT toasting bread in the toaster and was reprimanded by I think the owner. I later warmed a croissant in the microwave and when I went to do the same with a 2nd was told by the same woman that she did not think it would work. When I told her it already had, she rolled her eyes then said “Ah you are English – You like a hot breakfast” or words to that effect. Well, I am English – I do on occasion like a hot breakfast but usually, I have a cold breakfast. I do however like my croissants warm and would prefer not to have to microwave them to warm them but needs must. I don’t think she meant to be rude but that is certainly how she came across.
The hotel is well located – About a 5 minute walk to the sea front and some pleasant restaurants and a 15 minute walk to the tram stop where you can catch the coast tram to Knokke or De Panne and towns along the way
In the pictures, the hotel looks somehow trendy – In reality, it is just another business hotel – I won’t be returning for either business or pleasure

Room Tip: If you want air-conditioning, don't select the Classic Rooms

Dear Susy

Thank you for your feedback regarding our hotel. We are pleased to read that you appreciated our very good location. However, we are sorry to hear that you found Ostend a bit diappointing as a tourist destination and that you won't be returning. We apologize that the lady of the house came across a bit rude but as you thought before she certainly did not mean to. Although all the facilities of our different room types are clearly mentioned on our website (as well as their pictures), guests may always contact us by mail or phone (reception is open 24/7) when they have questions or special requirements. Our Ecology and Executive rooms are refurbished rooms and besides air-conditioning they are also equipped with a trouser press, iron and ironing board.

Thank you for choosing hotel Bero for your stay in Ostend.

we stayed four nights in an ecology room, afterwards we found out that the executive rooms, at the same price, are more spacious, without seaview but more protected from the street noice, more suited for elder people with a bathtub instead of a walking-in shower in the ecology without any handle or coat-hanger
it should be useful for the less mobile customers, to provide detailed information about the Centrum bus N° 1, connection from the Railway station to the stop "Iseghem street", only a few steps to the Bero hotel, the same bus N° 1 to return via Marie-José square to the railway station
at both stops connection with tram 0, direction Knokke and De Panne;
the buffet breakfast was very extensive, for bread and cereals, but with a lack of fresh goat and other cheeses and a cool place for natural yogurt,
on the promenade we found a large choice of very good fish restaurants, pray attention to the different closing days, necessary to make early reservations, such as Le Chevalier N°66 (closed Wedn & Thursday), 't Boothuis (closed Mon & Tuesday)
De Kotter in Nieuwpoort (closed on Mon & Tuesday)
the Bistro Albert, with seaview, now recently opened in the Thermae Palace gave us quality food and a good service; it replaced the Paddock Bistro and the Perigord restaurant,
we regret the Bero hotel could not provide a simple blanket instead of the standard syntethic duvet, not appropiate for an heart patient;
we enjoyed very much our stay, next time we will try to use the very nice swimming pool,
thanks for the friendly attention of the reception

Dear guest

Thank you for your feedback regarding our hotel. Indeed our new "Ecology" rooms (24 à 27m²) have no bath (to avoid waste of water) but a nice walk-in rain shower. Our "Executive" rooms have bath/shower but are not always more spacious (24 à 30m²). Only our 3 adapted "Executive" rooms for the disabled are more spacious (37m²). Our "Classic" family rooms (33m²) and our "Classic" family suites (46m²) also have bath/shower and are more spacious as well.

It is nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you will visit us again to try our swimming pool. For your next stay we will have a simple blanket ready for you. Thank you for choosing hotel Bero for your stay in Ostend.

The hotel is located a few steps away from the beach! There is also a parking(25 euro) but make sure that you make a reservation. The hotel is now busy with a renovation, and thats good! My room (413) was a new room (eco) and it was really nice. We also had a big terrace and a rainshower. All rooms are very big but i advise the eco rooms and not the classic one.

The breakfast was good, maybe some new chairs will be great but the staff was very friendly.
There was a little bit of noise during night, but it was not that bad.

There is also a pool and sauna (open until 2200h).
