“Stayed in better”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

It may be that all accommodation in Ypres is expensive, but at £80 per room I would expect to be able to at least swing a cat, have a bed that wasn't like sleeping on concrete and have coffee/tea making facilities. The breakfast was average too. I read other reviews here about upstairs rooms, but we had a room along the 'outside' corridor and were constantly disturbed by people walking past. On a positive, it's in a great/central location.

Booked here on a tour of Belgium, seemed quite favourable after the reviews on Trip Advisor. Check in was a breeze, we were then given a small tour of the hotel with regards to the breakfast area etc. Receptionist also advised us on where to park which we did nearby. The hotel is in an excellent location in Ieper close to the Main Square and Menin Gate, also a good selection of bars and restaurants. Our room was located at the back of the property with a view of some rooftops, but it was spacious and clean with a large and well maintained bathroom. Breakfast was okay with some continental variety but a bit of a scrum at the time we were down. The stairs from the breakfast room to the rooms is marble and quite slippery when your feet are wet. All things considered a very nice place to stay and was perfect for our requirements.

A basic, budget hotel in a central location. Breakfast was adequate. Receptionist helpful re location to leave our car safely. Wi Fi was very good. Rather strange stairway to our room but all in all it sufficed our needs for one night.

My wife and I were booked to stay at this hotel for 3 nights as part of a motorbike tour of Belgium. The day before we were due to arrive, we had an accident on the bike with the outcome that my wife suffered a broken arm and we had to cut short our trip and return to the UK. In spite of instant notification to this hotel , and an appeal via Booking.com, this hotel refused to show any sympathetic consideration to our circumstances and made a full cancellation charge. My dvice would be to steer clear of this hotel and also think twice about using Booking.com, who clearly exert little influence over the hotels they supply bookings to !

The owner was so helpful - his recommendations for all the restaurants during our stay were spot on - all within a short distance from the hotel and where locals enjoyed eating Our favourite was Capella - we ate there 3 times. The restaurant on the island in the middle of the moat is also a beautiful spot for lunch. Breakfast in hotel was continental but with excellent choice and plentiful. However, it was a shock when we discovered our rooms were situated UP the spectacular marble staircase (as described in previous reviews), as I had asked for a ground floor room for my 2 disabled parents in their eighties. The hotel was full so my parents in true Dunkirk spirit had to make the best of it and tackle the steep climb immediately at the top of these steep stairs. Fortunately, there was a sturdy rail on the wall side. Their room was also quite noisy at the front even though the hotel is situated in a small cobbled street off the main square. Excellent location though, for Menin gate. The owner directed us to Free parking not far away. It is possible to park outside the hotel Free after 6 and parking was never an issue. Although DO NOT park in main square on a Friday night as you will be towed away as there is a market on a Saturday morning (again great local knowledge from hotel owner meant we did not make that mistake). Passchendaele Memorial Museum at Zonnebeke is a must visit with it's newly opened re-created deep dug and shallow trenches. I'd say that this museum is even better than the Flanders museum in the main square of Leper (and that is something as Flanders museum is also very good but much much busier). Yes, this hotel is basic, but it has a character that the corporate hotels lack. If you want a hot drink in your room just remember to bring your own travel kettle as most smaller hotels in Belgium do not provide this facility.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for ground floor room at back if you have any difficulty walking or climbing or want...

We arrived at the hotel, which is down a side street running off the main square, at around 5-30pm on a Saturday evening. We were able to park in a disabled bay, right outside the hotel, and the car was able to stay there until our, departure on Sunday lunchtime. I had requested a twin ground floor room for both my own and my wife's mothers to share, both of whom have disabilities. Their room was lovely, at the end of a courtyard, which itself was very pleasant, and a nice place to sit and have a drink from the bar. We were greeted on arrival by a lovely young lady, who showed us the facilities, and explained about the code to get in after 10pm. She later served us with drinks, while busily cleaning down the outside furniture, and she recommended the best places to eat - she was a very nice young lady and a great asset for the hotel. My wife and I had a room on the third floor, which involved climbing two very steep and narrow flights of stairs, which was not easy with suitcases etc, and would have been absolutely impossible for anyone with a disability. The bottom flight of stairs ran up from the beautiful dining room, and looked stunning, as they were formed in marble, as were many of the adornments in the dining room. Ours was a triple room, as that was all that was available, and it was a very pleasant and spotlessly clean room. The beds were very firm but comfortable, and we could look out to the square from our window. the only disappointment was the lack of a kettle or drink making facilities.

It took us less than 10 minutes to reach the Menin Gate for the very moving last post ceremony, and we had a nice meal in the Vivaldi restaurant in the square, overlooking the very impressive, Cloth Hall. The breakfast was excellent, made all the better by the lovely surroundings. We had baskets of rolls and pan au raisin on the table, with cereals, meats, cheeses, boiled eggs etc in ample supply,, along with really nice coffee. The owner was giving good advise to other guests, about places to visit in the area, though we had our day planned. The hotel is lovely, with friendly staff, and an ideal location, and I would have absolutely no hesitation in staying here again.

Room Tip: Definitely need to be on the ground floor if you have a disability or heart condition!!

This is a very basic hotel by North American standards, however the rooms are very clean, service is friendly and the breakfast and breakfast room was very good. The room is quite spartan, with no night table beside the bed. Bathroom is big, soaps and shampoo very basic in quality. Again spotlessly clean. Curtains and bedspread could use an update.
Location is excellent, close to the Flanders Museum, a very short walk to The Menin Gate for The sounding of the Last Post each night at 8 pm.
There are numerous restaurants close to the hotel.

Room Tip: If your intent is to attend The Last Post, and visit the Flanders Museum, this is an excellent locat...
