“Enroute stop on return from Germany/Austria”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

We stayed for 2 nights to break our journey returning to UK from Austria. Very helpful receptionist. Rooms were very clean and thereis tea and coffee making facilities but they are different very lodgelike with wooden panelling and very sloping ceiling. The panelling is very dark wood and so makes rooms a bit dark. The beds were very large and very comfortable. Large ensuite bathroom with bath and over shower. Plenty of light in there.
The breakfast was all self service with a great variety of choice. We ate in the hotel the second night not wanting to treck back into Ypres centre twice in one day - the food was excellent though service a little slow. Very nice bar area for pre dinner beers.
The location of Flanders Lodge is excellent if you are just stopping enroute and don't want to go into Ypres centre. It is a good 30 minute walk into the centre with the first 15mins on a road with no footpath, just grass verges. There is however a bus number 95 which stops outside hotel and right in the centre of Ypres and it runs every half hour and only costs 2 euros.

Stayed here 1st Sept and found hotel clean excellent breakfast but this hotel is a 20 minute walk to Ypres. There was only one taxi so difficult to get transport to and from hotel. The location of hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. On our first night there we couldn't get anything to eat in hotel as the chef was off sick. LOL Bit of a disappointment with location as the road back to hotel is a main road and quite dangerous especially walking in dark.

Stayed for 3 nights and found it homely, friendly and well positioned for battlefield tour. Breakfast was excellent. Staff were wonderful, and really made us feel welcome. The rooms were a little dark and the hotel is undergoing structural extensions but nevertheless it did not detract from a lovely stay.
There are 3 things you need from a hotel - a clean bed, good food and friendly, helpful staff - we got all 3. So going back there very soon.

Stayed with a large group visiting the battlefields and normally lodge in the centre of Ypres but our usual place was full. Check in arrangements at reception were chaotic and the layout of the place is such that we had to have someone take us to rooms if staying in the "new" annex. As a previous reviewer has commented, the rooms in this part of the hotel seem to have two numbers - one on a scrap of paper above the door. Have to admit it took ages to work out the route back to reception. The room (414) had an unfinished feel about it and although it was dark due to the lack of sun penetration (lower level rooms are blow the roofline of the main building) I have to admit it was quiet and I kept the window open (or as far as it would open on restrictors) - friends in some rooms complained of noise from the bar at odd hours.

There were cheap furniture and fittings, the mattress is hard, no room air conditioning, no proper hangers (can't hang trousers - see pictures), couldn't work out how to operate the rain shower, sink tap too far back from the basin (difficult to use for anything other than filling), towels were almost worn out.

However, there was a good selection of food at breakfast even if the cutlery and crockery arrangements are a bit strange (you have to use the stuff laid out on the table and reuse for each course) - to be honest I pinched stuff laid out elsewhere but others were told off when asking for clean crockery.

Best Western have their brand name over the hotel and if they read these reviews then they need to do something to improve the guest experience. I'm also of the opinion they are short staffed.

It's a relatively short walk (25 mins) into town (turn right out of the hotel and keep going) and you end up right at the Menin Gate. If you're a smoker then there's an interesting bar on the corner at the traffic light junction about half way - the owner has a complete disregard for smoking laws and was recently fined and imprisoned for 40 days. Beer/alcohol prices are cheap (we paid under five euros for 3 beers) and so you might want to drop in for that alone! There's a Dutchman working there who speaks english (picked up whilst staying at "Her Majesty's Pleasure" in Wandsworth Prison), plus another chap who speaks english and so you won't feel too lonely!

One of the most bizarre and worst hotels I have stayed in. Our group was in what was clearly an unfinished extension, and all agreed it was dreadful - some likened it to prison cell block H. On industrial estate. Front automatic door took about a minute to open. Incomprehensible room numbering system, with pieces of paper stuck on doors. Cheap hardboard doors with scuff marks. Walls full of scuff marks. Door frames unfinished.
Room minimalist - no rugs, carpets or pictures. No mirror in room. Toilet separate from shower room - why? No lock on toilet door. Nowhere to put soap, etc in the shower. Took ages to work out that to turn on the waterfall shower you have to press in a button underneath the flow control and turn it backwards. Walls as thin as the skimpy bath towels. No wardrobe or drawers. Hangers on two spikes sticking out of wall near room door; none for trousers. No English language TV channels. No milk in room - only two packets of powdered creamer (on kettle tray which was placed back to front).
Several spiral staircases, not easy to negotiate. Straight staircase flight against wall, open on other side with no handrails whatever - asking for an accident, especially as automatic light did not come on until I almost reached the bottom. Terrifying! Spiral staircase in bar sticks out, waiting for someone to bang their head by walking into it. One emergency exit led to a dangerous, unfinished surface, and another to a one-metre drop. No fire instructions in room. How did this place get a licence?
Food passable, but no choice for dinner. Breakfast chaotic. Buffet at end of narrow room, next to kitchen for convenience of (the one) staff, not for customers who were jostling with each other to get access to the food. Staff refused to serve drinks or food on the terrace during the day.
In summary, a very badly designed hotel, amateurishly run. One would have thought that with Best Western's long experience of hotels they might know better.

The hotel seems to have been recently extended and the room and area of the hotel we stayed in was not finished. There were bits of paper stuck to the door as room numbers and the doors themselves needed painting. Even the emergency exits led to unfinished paths with obstacles.
Initial reception was not very friendly and pretty unhelpful. They didn't know if there was room for dinner - the dining facility doesn't seem to have expanded to cope with the additional rooms. The lady on reception the next day was much better, so like much of the facility it was all a bit patchy.
Breakfast was poor and required a lot of fetching if you were at the far end away from the buffet.
Not particularly close to the centre, but taxis were relatively easy to get at €10 a trip.
The showers were good but not much else to recommend this pretty featureless hotel.

Room Tip: Some rooms are up stairs with no lift and no handrail.

Have stayed at this Best Western Hotel before about 3 years prior and didn't really like it but heard it had undergone a revamp so decided as it was near our destination to try again as we visit that area regularly. The pine wood (hence lodge) had been whitewashed and does brighten the rooms up a bit but it is very dark in the rooms with just a sky vent - no windows which I didn't like. The shower facilties have been done to a good standard now. Was very hot in the room and very stuffy - its a clean hotel but very basic. There was one man on reception and bar at night and I didn't see any other staff so we had to wait half an hour for a bar drink. Only saw 4 other guests so we were a bit lost in the hotel. I wouldn't stay there again, just my personal taste I prefer a light airy friendly feel to a hotel and this is quite the opposite. When we asked for anything e.g a drink - we felt we were being a nuisance. Breakfast was OK - what you expect for continental food but again no windows open and we were sweating buckets in the restaurant! Just not my cup of tea!!!
