This lovely property is located across the street and ancient mote from the ancient city wall a half block from the famed Menin Gate Memorial. You must see the 8 p.m. nightly WW I memorial service that has been observed nightly sine 1928 except during WW II when the Germans occupied the area. Bus loads of people come to view this nightly. The owner of Menin Gate B&B is the chairman of the organization that puts on the service each night. When we were there he was in charge of the service that night and took us at 7:45 to a spot reserved for us right in front (I do not know how often he is able to do that). The property is well kept, spacious, comfortable, and a short walk to the city center where there is a "must see" WW I museum. Be sure to see the pictures in the visitor center of the city before and after WW I (totally decimated) and as it is today completely rebuilt as it was before the war. Close by the city is Tyne Cot British War Cemetery well worth visiting also, especially the visitor center.

For a supposed 'school' hotel, it is not all that school friendly. To start with, the hotel looks unfinished with wallpaper falling off and a huge crack in the arch into the dining room. The rooms themselves weren't very safe or hygienic. In our room, the toilet handle had been snapped off and you had to push a lever in the toilet workings two or three times for it to flush. The vent in the bathroom did not work, letting steam into the room when having a shower, risking setting the fire alarm off, which incurs a €700 Euro fine. The door to the bathroom did not lock either. The mattresses were stained on the beds and the sheet you get as a duvet is very itchy and uncomfotable. The bunk beds themselves were very unstable and need replacing. We had to place a couple of books under one of the corners so it did not slope. The lower beds are held up by three pieces of plywood, straddled across the frame, with no attachments whatsoever. There was only one plug socket to the eight of us, directly underneath the sink, with wires showing. Breakfast was again, dissappointing. The bread was too thin to spread anything on, the toaster broke on the first morning and there was a selection of two continental cereals. There was not much option to drink either, with the choice of orange juice or water. The packed lunches however weren't too bad, as you get as packet of two waffles, a baguette, a piece of fruit and 500ml bottle of water. Another good thing about the hotel is it's fantastic location, literally across the road from the Menin Gate and only a few minutes walk from the centre of Ypres. The hotel did also have the added advantage of free wifi, with four computers availiable for use.

Horrible! I went as part of a school visit and I along with many others thought it was horrible! In our room the single glazed window was broken letting in a mighty draft the windows were condensed at morning and the radiator barely worked we had only a blanket and nothing more on an old spung up bed I wanted to go home as soon as I saw it. The bathroom was tiny so small the basin had to be in the main room! The main room was constantly cold with damp in one corner and graffiti everywhere else. The whole place was horrible! I would never go back! Ever!

As a battlefield tour operator specialising in good history for school groups, the three school hotels in Ieper and the new one in Albert are ideally located. Each has its own unique character with plenty of facilities for the group to relax in the evening. The key selling point is single occupancy, knowing the building is yours for the 3 or 4 days. Rooms are basic but they need be nothing more, all have en suite with plenty of hot water for the showers. Co-operation with local restaurants is good. The owner will always listen and is keen to develop and improve the facilities offered. I was the first tour company to make a booking some 7 years or so ago and continue to use the school hotels for the majority of tours.

After reading a previous negative review about the Menin Gate B&B, I felt compelled to write in with my very positive experience(s). As a history teacher, I have taken groups of students there for the past 6 years. In all that time, I have never found anything negative to say about the place. The staff are excellent- accommodating to all my various needs and demands (often at the last minute), the rooms are spotlessly clean (and I know this because if they weren't then the students would complain!), the ensuite is clean, well maintained and very sufficient for what is required, the beds are comfortable, the eating area is fantastic- chalkboard, tv, beamer , dvd player and then there's also the pool table, tv lounge area, wifi and the computer area. After a long day visiting the trenches and graveyards around Ypres, it is a relief to return to the Menin Gate where a relaxing and welcoming environment exists. Definitely a place I will return to again next year and one that I would highly recommend to any school group, couple or individual who is looking for somewhere to stay in Ypres.

I have taken many school trips away, and have been to ypres many times. I have been to the Poppies and the sister hotel the "Salient" many times and go back every year with years 7-13. The Hotel building give you a real feel of Belgium and are buildings that were built post WW1, they are full of atmosphere and character. The owners are really friendly and helpful and the staff there are really helpful. The free internet, pool and games are loved by the students, as are teh high quality meals served in the local restaraunts. The food is excellent and I have never had one complaint from any student. The rooms are not 4 star rooms but it is not a 4 star hotel, I have stayed in many hotel rooms that are far worse that are 2-3 stars in the UK. The linen is clean and the water is always hot and the town square is only 5 mins walk away. The staff are really looked after with an excellent value refreshment fridge. With coach parking right outside The poppies, th central location and facilities make the perfect venue. i have been going for 10 years and go back regularly.

I recently stayed at the hotel on a trip with my school and found it very enjoyable. During the overnight stop i stayed in only one room so i can judje only on that. All linen and towels were clean and fresh. The room was dark but had fabulous views over menin gate. I found the room cold and slept with a coat and dressing gown on but that was probabally because i slept next to the window. The food was terrible so bring your own seriously their continental breakfast was toast with jam, cheese or ham or/and cornflakes. Overall i think the hotel was around average. Low temperatures so bring layers including socks!
