Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

“Well worth seeing”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Makes you realise just how many people lost their lives so we can live like we do today. Well worth spending a bit of time reading some of the names and appreciating what they, and their families, went through.

“A must see”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Great bit of architecture with so man names of the men without a grave. The last post by the Ypres Fire brigade makes the hairs on the back of you neck raise.

“A moving ceremony”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

The ceremony was a fitting memorial to those who fell in WW1 but were never found.
My advice would be to be there at least 45 minutes before the start.

“Poignant and emotional”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Never thought of myself as the emotional kind but as we were in Bruges we decided to go and visit this amazing memorial. Having just watched the D-Day coverage at home it brought home just how much these people gave for our present freedoms. You can feel something tangible in the air when you stand and look in awe at the list upon list of brave souls that gave all for us.

Every school should have to go and visit this memorial as part of the National Curriculum and the government should foot the bill.

DO NOT LET FUTURE GENERATIONS FOGET
