Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

Something young and old should all experience. It is a beautiful memorial and every night the last post is played. Arrive early so you can look at the memorial.

Respect

The town around the memorial is also worth having a look at.

Don't miss it

We had the great privilege to lay a wreath on behalf of our school group. The crowd of over a thousand of Dutch Army engineers, Cadets from British isles and many tourists was an eerie, inspiring and insightful experience to commemorate the missing, including a cousin killed at Zonnebeke. One night won't be enough, stay close by.

Every night at 8pm there is a memorable service and the laying of wreaths. It can get very crowded so we went up the ramparts and watched the wreath laying near the steps inside the gate. The names engraved on the memorial reveals how far soldiers travelled to fight and die in this tiny part of Belgium. The daily event reveals that the local people will never forget the impact and tragedy of the 20th century wars.

This site is so evocative and the destination for many people in Belgium. The visual of the memorial is magnificent, but when the names are added of those with no known grave, it is without equal.
