Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

lovely service done every night and very respectful and moving service. The town is lovely and quaint with ample parking and beautiful cobbled streets and many restaurants. The museum is in an excellent location in middle of town with many bars and restaurants and well worth a visit.

Truly a moving tribute to those who gave their lives in WWI in the Ypres salient. Every evening at 8 pm. This is a MUST.

The setting is beautiful and the tradition of the fire brigade to sound the last post at 8pm every day should be recognised in itself as a wonderful achievement. The list of names just goes on and on, many of the fallen having travelled halfway around the world to lose their lives in Flanders fields. Generations to come will steadily feel less connected to the Great War but hopefully monuments like this will give some indication as to the size of the sacrifice and the value put upon it by the society that remained.

Went to Ypres to attend the Last Post cemony at 8pm, which takes place every night or EVERY day without fail. This is without doubt a fantastic tribute from the Belgium people to the fallen in the wars. It is a huge memorial crossing over the inner town moat. Its impressive design ensues that the tens of thousands of names, by regiment and rank, can be viewed with reasonable ease. There are inner steps on both sides leading to outside sections of this memorial, containing even more names by the thousands. There is a hush all over even though many people are visiting. Nobody wants to disturb the reverence of the place and very moving with many folks having tears in their eyes. Very easy to get to, being about 200 yards from the main square in Ypres. Its a Wow place, not for the building itself but for the reason it is there. Thank you Belgium for your respect.

A great place for ww2 history. A must stay for the fire brigade doing the last post each night. It's moving and it's powerful. Meningitis is beautiful and a real hidden almost forgotten gem in Europe at times. A must for any traveller.
