“Stunning appearance”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

Just spent the past two days at this hotel on a mini-break - first impressions were amazing, as you pull up it is quite spectacular, and the gardens are beautiful too. The mansion room we stayed in was lovely, and not a disappointment. However cleanliness needs a little attention.

Our towels were not changed after the first day, there was dirty linen left in the corridor, and dirty plates and glasses from someone's room service left from Monday evening and was still there when we left on Wednesday morning, a little further up the corridor a champagne bottle and cooler. The tables in bistro were sticky, and our glasses were grubby, however the food was very good, and the portions were huge! The staff were pleasant and friendly but just a little more attention on cleanliness is needed.

Thank you for your positive review and I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your recent stay with us. I am sorry however, to note that you encountered a couple of housekeeping issues during your stay, which are most certainly not indicative of our usual high standards and am confident have been addressed by our housekeeping department. We look forward to welcoming you back again next time you are in the area.

We had a voucher for 2 nights with breakfast so thought we would try it. On arrival the view of this fantastic building took our breath away. This was the reason I booked this for the picture looked amazing, and we were not disappointed. Magnificent piece of architecture. Our room was in the stable courtyard which we already knew from other reviews. It was to our surprise a rather nice room. A comfortable bed and spotlessly clean. The only thing was it was rather warm, and to open the window was difficult as they are the old type that pull down. Don't let the reviews put you off. If you are looking for a luxury 5 star then do not buy vouchers! Yes, it does need updating in parts, but it is a very old building. We went over to the main building, the staircase is fabulous work of art, and the very large fireplace is fantastic, just wish it had been lit to see the effect. The breakfast was very good, bacon delicious, full english help yourself buffet, or if not you could have cold meats, cereal, yoghurt, toast and preserves. All the staff were very polite to us. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful, loads of wildlife, sheep on the drive, ducks and swans on the river. Such a lovely setting, and our sunny weather helped too. There is not a lot around there to do. I cannot comment on the restaurant as we ate out at the little local pubs which were really enjoyable grub. We did not use the pool or spa either. Grantham is only up the road, usual shops, etc. Melton Mowbray too, the same. There is a golf course next door to the hotel. There was a conference on when we were there, and there was no noise around the building. They do weddings also, a big conservatory has been built on. There is such a lot of history. We would not go back, only because we like to try different parts of England. But would recommend this hotel to anyone needing a quiet break away from it all, in splendid surroundings. THANK YOU STOKE ROCHFORD FOR A VERY PLEASANT STAY!

The weather was glorious for a start. The hall and grounds immaculately kept. We were on an NUT members deal but upgraded to a mansion room as my husband is partially sighted and I thought the walk from the stable block for meals might be difficult . Our room number 2 was lovely, very big with a generous bathroom. Everything spotless. Plenty of tea, coffee etc plus dog bowl, towel and treats for our dog. Comfy bed, good sized towels good wi fi. The mansion rooms are in the roof on the second floor but there is a lift. We were unlucky that it broke down during our first evening but an engineer had been called. We only had to climb the stairs once, by the next morning it was repaired.
This place is very dog friendly and is idyllic for walkers with or without a dog. There was a wedding on on the Friday but we heard no noise from the disco in our room even with our windows open. It is an amazing wedding venue.
We will be back, the last time we visited was before the fire which was 2005. I have also been to few residential conferences here in my teaching days.

Room Tip: Room 2 well away from the function rooms. Don't expect a marvellous view as rooms are in the roo...

As you approach the main entrance you are greeted with a beautiful main hall but the big entrance is in fact not the main entrance and you are soon directed to a MUCH less impressive battered side door with temporary looking steps. The interior is tired and dated with awful wall paper, fire extinguishers, magnolia paint, cheap trim and 1970s carpeting. The recoieption is an open office which upon checking in directed us to a section of the hotel wich looked like a more modern bolt on. It had a school trip/YMCA feel with tiny room, small bath, cheap furnishings and horrible small plasma on an extended arm randomly plonked on the wall with hanging wires.

The bar is another 1970's magnolia affair with plastic seating. The a joining room is small with fabulous sofas but again let down by a barron featureless walls and drab feel.

In the morning breakfast was hard tofind as there were no signs. Lots of closed doors and a trip down what felt like a 'staff-only' staircase to a bog standard cooked breakfast of cold beans, sausage etc. The dishes were wash-streaked and still dirty as were some of the glasses and cups I saw. The felt greasy to touch.

The nicest room I found was the large wood paneled lounge which had lovely sofas but for some reasons the staff were hoovering around the guests and making a tremendous noise at 0830 am meaning it was impossible to concentrate.

Overall I felt the hotel was a cheap but not cheerful experience with little consideration to basic guest requirements and with a tired and thrifty approach to decor and ambiance.

Room Tip: Perhaps request a rom in the main building instead of the outside yards.

Thank you for your feedback, although I am sorry to read that you were disappointed with your recent stay. In all of our marketing, we aim to be painfully transparrent to explain that we have a variety of bedroom tyes on offer; some within the main Mansion House whilst others are within the adjacent Old Stables and Lodge buildings. I'm sorry if you felt that this was not clear to you at the time of booking. I would encourage you to contact me directly in order to address your particular concerns directly.

We were wowed by the beautiful sight of the hotel as we drove up, checking in was a little disappointing as we discovered they hadn't received my booking from booking.com and could only offer us the deluxe double room I had booked for one night instead of the two I had booked for. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant with very attentive staff who were happy to help with any request. Deluxe double was very comfortable, if ever so slightly grubby, the views out onto the gardens were amazing. After further discussion with reception they agreed that as I had booked the room early to celebrate our anniversary that we could stay in the room. Delicious cooked breakfast, walked around the garden and went to the leisure centre for a swim and gym session. Back to the hotel, sat in the bar for a while and then ate a beautifully presented and delicious cream tea. Served in wonderful room with an ornate ceiling. Ended the day watching England lose in the World Cup.

Room Tip: Try and book the mansion rooms, much nicer than the stable block and wifi included

We stayed in June for our wedding anniversary it was a KGB deal for two nights.. Was really excited driving down the drive beautiful grounds and building. We checked in told where our room was off we trotted haply excited got to the old stables thinking well ok it was a deal be reasonable got in to our room and we were dispirited we were in the corner room with 1 sky light, a tea stained carpet, a hole in the wall where the door had been pushed into before they had placed a door stopper to stop that but not even fixed the room, it was dusty and tiny. I was absolutely heart broken we may as well have stayed in a travel lodge for two nights for what we paid, we went to reception and asked for a upgrade there was no other rooms for the night but was for the next night.. So we took it and it was only surprisingly £20 extra so we went out and just got on with it till the next day when we re checked in told our room was in the mansion and it was stunning perfect unbelievably in a way as we were expecting just a room with a window haha! Needless to say this made my day the staff are all so lovely and polite and graces I was poured a cup of tea!! The grounds were lovely and we loved exploring in the new room the window view were amazing and the bathroom!! Wow!! I had a bath and a shower!! Our power went out in our room but it was fixed and we were apologised profoundly but we didn't mind just meant I had to stay in the bath longer! The receptionist Sara and the other young blonde lady were so lovely so thank you girls you do the hotel great service being so friendly! Sorry about the mixed review. I understand we were on a lower price deal as we are young and can't afford great trips but the first room was a great let down to yourselves and if we had just been there 1 night needless to say you would have had bad reviews and no recommendations but with our new room we would like to give a great review and thanks for making our 2 annervasary x

Recently returned for a one night stay as we were in the area following a 60th birthday treat for my husband. It's worth a visit for the beautiful grounds themselves and the drive down to the stunning Hall itself. We were warmly welcomed and made our way to the Lincoln Room which is huge with incredibly high ceilings and flooded with light. We chilled on the comfy sofa and caught up with emails - free wifi a big plus. The large bathroom benefits from both bath and separate shower. Dinner itself was excellent, matched by the discreet yet attentive service. We chose dishes from the set menu but it was easy to mix and match as required with the a la carte should you wish. After dinner drinks were taken into the lovely terraced gardens at the rear. A real gem hidden just if the A1. All in all, a lovely stay and we hope to return.

Room Tip: The Lincoln is lovely if you want to treat yourself
