We were so impressed by the outside of this grand Victorian property and exquisite grounds. However, were very disappointed with the shabby interior and less than friendly receptionist. However, the majority of staff were friendly and helpful.
We arrived at our courtyard room to find a mountain of dirty sheets and towels stacked against the door. These were quickly removed and we entered the small room and were almost knocked out by the smell of urine. This was put down to a burst pipe earlier in the day and a lack of staff to clean the rooms. The bathroom was filthy and spiders run up and down the shutters in the bedroom collecting prey in their webs. There was no running water in the room which was the last straw and we asked to be given another room. The second room was slightly bigger but had not been cleaned yet so we were asked to wait in the other room for 15 minutes until this one was prepared for occupancy. We arrived half an hour later to find only the sheets and towels changed. Pubic hairs adorned the beige bath and toilet which had faeces down the pan, and the floor was filthy. The carpet had never been vacuumed and the previous occupants had spilled coffee down the front of the drawers and had left biscuit crumbs on the top of the drawers. The operations manager was called and he admitted that this was unacceptable. He apologised and offered to bring us bottles of water (very hot day) and send someone to clean the room again. The water never arrived and a half hearted attempt was made at cleaning the room. If we had not been here to attend a wedding we would have left.
The meal in the restaurant was the worse meal I have ever eaten. Other diners were of the same opinion but none of us complained because we did not want to cause any distress to the bridal party.
This hotel has the potential to be a five star establishment when managed by the right people, if this happens we might come back but as it stands we would not recommend this hotel for anything other than a drink at the bar and the beautiful scenery.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms very noisy especially following a wedding as the drunks return to their rooms and ca...

I came here with my sister whilst my partner made use of the football pitch near the leisure area and I am so glad I tagged along!

The outside of the building is so impressive, it is beautiful. The inside in certain areas could do with a bit of love, e.g. the toilets near the bar area.

The 4 members of staff we came across were lovely with smiles on their faces.

My sister and I had never been before and we really wanted a tour and to see the rooms, but didn't want to ask - not that it mattered anyway because a lovely man, Stuart (I think that was his name), must've read our minds! (He is an asset to Stoke, such a shame he is leaving!) He came through the room and offered a tour of the Hall! We saw a range of superior rooms and he talked us through the history of the place and he clearly has a passion for Stoke as he told us the history with great enthusiasm.

I can't comment on if the beds were comfy or if the food was nice but I can say that the building is impressive and it is worth a drink in the garden on a summers evening (for a reasonable price too).. ask for a tour too!

This hotel really had the wow factor. Lovely setting for a romantic evening for two. We arrived around 6.30 and checked in. I have to be honest, we did not feel welcomed by reception. We both expected more of a warmer welcome. Apart from that, the rest of the stay was very good. We dinned in the restaurant and the food was very good served by attentive staff. The breakfast was even better with a a good selection and plenty of black pudding! The grounds were lovely after the evening meal, we even had a fun game of pool followed by a lovely walk in the grounds. The company really made the evening and we would certainly come back. You have raised the bar!

Thank you for your positive comments and i'm delighted to read just how much you enjoyed your stay with us. Im sorry to hear that the initial welcome wasn't 100%; we are building a new team in the Reception department so i'm confident that the training being implemented by our new Reception Manager will overcome that shortcoming. Despite this small hick up, i'm delighted you enjoyed all other aspects of your visit and from all the team, we look forward to being able to welcome you back before too long.

What a lovely setting for afternoon tea beautiful grounds lovely old building. Served by a very welcoming waiter who seemed very happy in his job, good selection of tea or coffee....we had to wait a while for the food to arrive but was kept informed about the delay and we didn't mind as the surroundings were so lovely. Great selection of cakes and sandwich followed by scones all of which was prefect. Totally worth the price and would love to return again certainly a place for a special occasion.

Place run by cynical management team. Sons wedding held there and many guests stayed over. Wedding breakfast managements interpretation of what was ordered clearly with intention of maximising profit.Rooms not ready for guests to change in. Disorganised and poorly trained staff.Be care full with your credit card as they dont seem to keep good accounts of what has been spent.Management say one thing then do nothing and do not respond to correspondence

Just returned from a 2 night stay on a KGB/buy a gift deal. A bit out of the way from everything and a task in itself crossing the A1 to get there! Very impressive sight as you drive up to the hall. Lovely grounds with sheep grazing. Pleasant checking in; advised room in the courtyard block, when we went to our room found it was a single - for two of us - back to reception, asked if there were any rooms available in the main hall Receptionist then proceeded to look through bookings and gave us a key to room on the 2nd floor in main hall supplement waivered - complimentary - bonus! Lovely spacious room with a full bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, ironing board and iron, fan and extremely comfortable double bed :) Complimentary newspaper left outside door each morning. Lovely breakfast each morning buffet style, full English, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast and tea/coffee served at your table. Can't comment on the evening meals as we didn't eat in the hotel. Hotel is very ornate but in need of some updating just a little shabby round the edges. Very clean and staff friendly. Would stay again if needed accommodation specifically in that area.
