Most people just whizz through Brading on the train but it's worth stopping off for a while to look around the station. Once threatened with demolition, but now saved with Grade-2 preservation listing, its lovely condition shows how greatly it is valued by the people of Brading. The station canopy ironwork is all painted in original colours, and the signal box has recently been restored and populated with dummies dressed in original clothing. You would expect all this on a preserved steam railway but not on the public system. The booking hall now contains a small cafe with tourist information, and another room has a fascinating collection of relics from the Isle of Wight railway history. There is also a little gift shop with books, jigsaws, biscuits and other 'touristy' bits. If you are in to bird watching this is the ideal access point for the RSPB reserve on Brading Marshes.
It's not so convenient if coming by car, the turn-off the main road isn't signed very well and parking is in the hands of the railway company who make an all-day charge. This is good at £1.50 but not so clever if you just want to visit the station for an hour.
