“A wonderful hotel for a relaxing break”
Reviewed 23 September 2013 via mobile

Hotel Sao Domingos is beautifully restored manor house. The decor is very tasteful, it's modern in the bedrooms and the bar but the main dinning room and lounge still has the original wooden floors and some older pieces of furniture. It's very upmarket without being pretentious. There is such a peaceful feel to this hotel. The corridors and rooms are very tranquil and cool and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Andre greeted us with a warm smile and made us feel very welcome. The pool area is lovely and very clean. Our room was gorgeous and had a huge bath and a balcony overlooking the pool. There was patio furniture on our balcony. The hotel is next to a lakeside beach which looked good although we didnt have time to go. We had lunch on our balcony and diner on the terrace. The food is excellent and there was a vegetarian option. Breakfast was lovely. We checked in for one night and enjoyed it so much we wanted to stay more but they were full. I would go back there for a week of relaxation. It is about 10 mins drive from Mertola but you dont need to leave the hotel. It is incredible value for money. In UK this hotel would easily be £180 per night. Thanks for a lovely stay

After a couple of days in Lisbon in last week of May, moved inland to the Alentejo region for my second stay at this Hotel. Not sure why Hotel was nearly empty, i know it is in the heart of the countryside and the schools were off but i benefited from the run of the place. The hotel has nice cool lines with a peaceful ambience. Its situation is fairly close to the pretty historic riverside town of Mertola in classic underdeveloped countryside. However, over a quiet road from the Hotel is a lake with a small strip of beach ideal for a cooling dip in the summer. Hotel itself has a pleasant pool with modern decking and a supporting bar, surrounded by well tended gardens. Majority of rooms have views of pool and garden with their own well kept terrace with lounger and tables. Anyone living in or near UK towns will be impressed by the night skies here. The Hotel can cater for a romantic stay with a funky in door bar, but its location is ideal for people to take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Hotel exudes an ambience that you will pay £200 plus a night for in more trendy destinations. This Hotel is ideal to fit a holiday that includes driving between Lisbon and Algarve. This has to be a great way of visiting Portugal, taking in Lisbon city break with Algarve beaches and the secret gem that is the Alentejo inbetween. I stayed for about £60 pn and saw that as outstanding value. The Hotel Restaurant plays to its strengths with tasty local fare, although some may find insufficent selection. Over demanding clientele could stretch the staff on occasion. But not through lack of friendliness or a wish to help, it uses local staff and does not have the pace of service that can be had elsewhere. The self service breakfast is OK but is an area where things could improve. I remember it being better on my previous visit in August, I had great evening meals even though Hotel was quiet with good reasonbly priced wines. The meal prices complete overall picture of great value. All in all a place that at end of May should be hard to book.

Room Tip: Pick the garden views, and in late spring early summer go to bed istening to Nightingales and wake t...

It's my third stay at this hotel and I keep enjoying it!
I think it's a fine place (good rooms, good breakfast, good pool, good ambiance), with a very nice location and friendly staff.
I don't really agree with the people who consider it expensive and I actually think it's good value for money.
However, the restaurant is a downpoint. The food is just ok (and maybe I'm being nice about it)
and the service could also be improved. This hotel (a four star that lives up to that standard) deserves better. And it can be done!

I had chance to stay at Hotel São Domingos, for the well-known Mértola’s Islamic Festival. The hotel was offering a special package, which quite interested me.

First of all, I should clarify that this is not a 5-stars establishment as some mentioned, but actually a 4-stars hotel. It is located on a small cute and historical town, but that nowadays is clearly “abandoned”. Our stay did not start so well, as there was a misunderstanding at the reception, once they were stating that my stay started one day before. Fortunately I’m organized and was able to show the e-mail conversation proving that my stay should start the current day.

Nevertheless the room was nice, simple with a nice balcony. The swimming pool was large and next to it, there's a small pretty garden. The only negative aspects seemed cleanliness to me: the room was not so clean, as I could easily find small spiders and ants, for example. Also, the swimming pool should be cleaned more frequently, because there are many trees nearby and the area is quite windy.

The special package also included a tasty biscuit & tea snack right after sunset and a thematic dinner, which was not bad at all but could still be much better. However, the service and the romantic environment (our table was right close to a small fountain) turned to be a big plus. Unfortunately the observatory was closed and was not able to see the amazing sky during those summer days.

Overall, it was really worth it, even though it is a bit overpriced for the location and service...

Room Tip: If possible, when reserving a standard room, ask for a room facing the swimming poll. The other side...

The hotel building is beautiful, well decorated with lots of original pieces and antiques from the offices of the old mining company.
Our room was simple, but nice. It had a wonderful veranda, with a view to the river beach.
Everything was very clean.
The first night we ate at the hotel's restaurant. I don't recommend it. The service was amateur. The meal I ordered, a regional and typical dish ("açorda"), was terrible. We paid far too much for the quality of the food and service.
Next day, we ate at the restaurant in front of the hotel. The food was wonderful! And most of the hotel's guests we had seen were eating there also.
I liked having free wifi.
I also liked the lovely ladies in the reception, all very kind.
This region of Alentejo is particularly beautiful. It is such a pitty that the hotel gives so little information of what to see in the area. We asked and we were given only a printed map of the village of Mina de S. Domingos, from their own website.
I'm sorry, but for me a hotel is more than a building. And this lovely place deserved a better service.

The building is very nice and has been well renovated. The deco inside is lovely with plenty of old machine and souvenir. Good level of services (pool, games,...)
They definitely need to change the beds, it was like sleeping on rocks. Too hard for a good sleep. Also the rooms are rather dark. Free wifi and parking.
The restaurant was not a good experience. Service very slow. Not all meals available because it was a national holiday that day (!); if you consider it is a day off then you don't open the doors but if you are open the clients expect to be served as usual not matter which day it is.
