“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2013

We took the train from Lisbon, and stayed in Evora for one night at the Albergaria do Calvario. What a treat! This is a gorgeous place, our room was just fantastic - very comfy and roomy...and we had a balcony where we could sit outside and relax. The property is beautiful, gorgeous plants, gardens, courtyard, inside and out. Very relaxing common area where you have access to their computer, bar, books, games, etc.

The breakfast is out of this world good - oh so yummy. Peter and Nina really know how to chef it up, amazing baked goods! We had a great time staying with them. Evora is a cute town, and it was so fun to walk around all of the little streets, see the ruins, the market, the University and the people of this town. It was a little $$ but worth it. Great place to stay!

Room Tip: We had the room with the balcony, which was awesome.

Everything was good about this small hotel inside the walls of Evora....spacious room, great location, amazing staff.....cannot say enough good things and would return in a hearbeat. This is an area of wonderful restaurants and wineries and our hosts helped us totally enjoy the 2 days we spent in Evora.

My wife and I picked this hotel through Trip Advisor and it was everything writers had said. We have been on the road for three weeks from New Zealand and the welcome was outstanding, out of all of our travels we have never had such great service! Offered a lovely glass of wine on arrival and then given a town map with a special booklet pointing out their favourites sites and places to eat (in very good English I must add) Rooms were large, clean and quiet. Breakfast was fantastic and served in a lovely intimate dining room with local fare on offer. Cosy intimate bar with tapas on offer in the evening until 12pm if you don't want to go into town for dinner or arrive a little late - great opportunity to meet other guests and hear their travel stories as well. Lovely comfy sofas and chairs with a library area. Great parking and on departure asked what our plans were and where we were going then we were given two complimentary bottles of water to send us on our way in the car - put this lovely hotel on your list if visiting Evora or the surrounding area.

The whole place felt like home
A must

Everything about the Albergaria do Calvario is Serb. Welcoming and helpful staff, Greta service, good snacks (tapas in the bar), a wonderful breakfast and a good location close to all the major sites in the old town. The Albergaria matches the charm of Evora

This was an outstanding place to stay in Evora. The hotel room was spacious and nicely furnished, with a completely modern bathroom with nice toiletries provided. The bed was one of the best we had anywhere in Portugal. It had a very modern and efficient climate control. The WiFi was blazingly fast and strong throughout the hotel. The restaurant had really high quality food, with an eye to sourcing local and organic ingredients. It was so good, we ended up having a couple of lunches there, as well as our included breakfast. (Their flexible hours are especially handy if you find yourself looking for food at, say 3pm, when many other places are closed.) The room and food alone would earn this place 5 stars, but what sets it even more apart is the service. When we arrived, as our bags and car were being put away for us, the woman at the desk greeted us by name, and said "I was told one of you was gluten-free. We've got some gluten-free bread and cereals for you at breakfast." During our visit, we were given excellent advice on what to do, where to go, where to eat, all completely suited to us. It wasn't just "oh, here's our list of restaurants we recommend". It began with a discussion about what kind of food we liked and what we appreciated in a restaurant, and then a completely knowledgeable discussion about the features and drawbacks of various options, with the result being a wonderful dinner that was perfect for us. For sightseeing, they could give tips and directions for do-it-yourselfers like us, or they could arrange guides for people who wanted more. And well beyond standard tours, they had some great suggestions for things to do and connections to help you do them. Want to get an insider's look at the nearby megaliths? They could put you in touch with an actual archaeologist to show you around if you like. It was all truly above and beyond our high expectations. If we had known all that Evora and the Albergaria do Calvario had to offer, we would have stayed more than one night!

Room Tip: We had a "premium" room (their top level), which was only a bit more, and well worth the l...

My new husband and I loved this sweet oasis. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating. Their food is delicious and locally sourced. We loved our room and and the location of the hotel. We would love to go back for another, longer visit.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the courtyard if you can.

To stay at the Albergaria is to appreciate why international travel guides list it as the best hotel in Evora. The key ingredient of its success is the approach of members of staff, who really seem to enjoy their work and will do just about anything (proper) to help you enjoy your stay.

Those we met are young, multi-lingual graduates of hotel schools. They have the knack of establishing a personal relationship with their guests and making them feel truly welcome.

The hotel is ideally located for guests arriving by car - as most do - just inside the walls of the old city. Negotiating the basement garage is not for the faint-hearted but the hotel is happy to park and fetch your car for you. I found myself being guided into an awkward parking spot just outside the hotel by no fewer than three welcoming members of staff - like a scene from a film!

From the hotel it's an easy 30-minute walk down the lanes and through the squares to the churches, museums, shops and Roman temple ruins that are the city's main attractions. Restaurants and coffee shops are plentiful.

Relaxing is easy in the hotel's attractive lounge and gardens. A computer is available in the lounge for the use of guests. Wifi can be accessed throughout the hotel. Breakfast offers a wide self-service choice, with eggs to be ordered according to taste. It helps if you like fado (passionate Portuguese singing) which is often heard in the public areas.

Our "superior" bedroom was spacious and comfortable although one or two more electrical sockets would have been appreciated. The mattress on our queen-sized bed was state of the art. The air conditioning really worked, essential for the comfort of visitors in the city's torrid summer months. There's a fridge in the room, as well as a safe although guests need to ask for a key. A litre bottle of water was provided free by the hotel each day.

The bathroom comes with all the accoutrements expected in a four star hotel, including a great shower.

We came for two nights and stayed for three. Beyond the bedroom windows could be heard just the occasional rumbling of car tyres on the cobbles. Sleep came easily. A great stay!
