My sister, and I loved our stay here! It was completely different than the big city hotels we had stayed at earlier in our trip. What a nice change to mix it up with a smaller, more personal experience. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and I would recommend it highly.

Lovely hotel, beautifully presented and with attentive and incredibly helpfiul staff, taking a very proactive approach to ensuring we enjoyed our stay, even to the point where they could provide personal reviews of all the restaurants in town. A lovely room properly air conditioned, a good breakfast with wide choice of good quality food and attractive lounges and outdoor seated area.

I'm torn with this review. Staff were warm and friendly,...very friendly and helpful, especially Peter. However, overall the Albergaria wasn't as good as I expected. It was a little further out of the centre than I expected,...no big deal though. The thing that was terrible was all the ants we had in our room. I'm not talking about just one or two ants, I'm talking about the floor *covered* with ants!!! It was disgusting. Also, I was in room #6, which is on the bottom floor, and it was quite noisy during the night. There were alot of wandering eyes walking the streets and it was impossible to have the window covering opened.

Overall, I would probably stay elsewhere next time. I had originally booked a different Albergaria in Evora a couple of days before but cancelled the day before we headed to Evora based on all the positive comments this Albergaria had. I wish I had remained booked at the other place instead. I hate whining about this place, but maybe my expectations were just to high based on all the positive comments.

On the plus side, however, the morning breakfasts are excellent, especially if you enjoy eating healthy organic foods.

Oh,...and one more thing: wifi service is terrible. It's a network shared connection, so the speed is terrible. Don't bother trying to use the wifi service in the rooms, I couldn't get a strong enough of a connection to use.

Ouch.
We are hesitant to reply to any review, but this one made us feel bad enough that we felt compelled. If you've read this review, you would be inclined to think our hotel is not clean, out of the way, and filled with looky-loos.

So take our views with a grain of salt, but here is our reply:

- Our location is inside the walls. We actually feel the location is ideal. The hotel has very easy access by car with free parking on site. You can walk everywhere: it is an easy walk to the main square, Praça do Giraldo. We are close to the center but quietly tucked away in a side street.

- Wifi. I suppose our free wifi needs improvement in certain areas of the hotel. The wifi signal can be spotty in some rooms due to the historic nature of our building (although it is very strong in all of our common areas) .

- Ground floor windows. Our building is almost 400 years old and the city of Évora has numerous restrictions about changing the building facade. A few of our ground floor rooms do face the side street. It is a pretty quiet side street with generally very little traffic. Some people like the convenience of the ground floor, others don't.

- Obviously, no one would like to have any ants in their room. We take cleaning very seriously. People generally feel very satisfied with our level of cleanliness. But in old buildings on a day with high heat, ants find their way to places with candy on the floor and leftover cookies in the garbage can.

We feel terrible this guest had a poor experience.
I bring up these points to address any doubts anyone may have after reading our guest's review and to show our genuine desire to please and make our guest's stay a positive one. If you have any questions or concerns - I welcome your contact. You can always reach me by email at nina@albergariadocalvario.com.

My husband and I stayed here while on a business trip. Evora was just a stop in between two places....we wish we would have stayed longer! Albergaria Do Calvario was a beautiful hotel with more than we expected. Everything about the hotel was perfect - from the decor, to the service, to the comfort. They have, hands down, the best hotel breakfast I have ever had. If you decide to stay here, you must make it more than 1 night!

Abundance is the word that comes to mind when I think of HOTEL ALBERGARIA DO CALVÁRIO in Evora. In every way, this place is exceptional without being pretentious, hospitable without being cloying. We felt more like personal guests or family than paying customers.

The website hadn’t prepared me for just how lovely this small hotel is. The owners have used furniture, fabrics, colors, and artifacts in their gracious public spaces that make them very inviting. They also outdo themselves in making a visitor’s stay memorable. We hated to leave this place and its amazing staff. Each person tried to please, on every level, a rare occurrence at today’s hosteleries.

Deborah, one of the staff, loves to cook, and while the hotel doesn’t have a restaurant per se, frequently Deborah (who is from Italy originally) will prepare something for guests, especially on a Sunday evening when many restaurants are closed. The first night she made us a pumpkin stuffed tortellini that was the best we’ve ever had, accompanied by a lush green salad. We were so impressed that we asked if we could eat there another night, the restaurants we’d been to unable to match her culinary skills. (We ate one night at the handsome Parador, and were disappointed by the offerings.) On our last night in Evora, she served us a pork dish with pears that was absolutely delicious. The place also features some fine Portuguese wines and, of course, the abundant breakfast that has been described so well in previous reviews.

Hugo, who also works there, bird dogged our laundry and dry cleaning, making a special trip on Sunday, his day off, to be sure we got it in time for our departure the following day. And Peter and Nina the owners, a lovely young couple, are serious about offering an outstanding resting place for travelers and contributing to the environment by using environmentally friendly products.

Last (but definitely not least), the spacious guest rooms are simply but tastefully furnished, and they offer plenty of space. A bonus is the Wifi throughout the place, including the charming courtyard. If you are in Evora, you shouldn’t consider staying anywhere else but this inn. You won’t be disappointed.

What a great way to begin our vacation at the Albergaria do Calvario. After a long drive from Madrid my husband and I made it to the lovely town of Evora. All the reviews of this gorgeous hotel are spot on - the rooms are gorgeous and spacious, the ambiance matches that of the town - cozy and charming, the food is thoughtfully prepared and served (bonus for all the organics and sustainable ingredients) and the staff and owners Peter and Nina make you feel like you are visiting long lost friends.

For those interested in dining in town - you have to check out Tasquinha do Oliveira. A husband and wife team own this wonderful place and have recently won some awards for their amazing cooking. A tiny little place you'll feel like you stepped into someone's home and they were entertaining you.

We just visited Evora, and had the great pleasure of staying at the Albergaria do Calvario for 2 nights. Their breakfast was easily the best one we had in Portugal, including the many upscale Pousadas we stayed at.
This is a very well-thought-out hotel: The rooms are comfy, with solid AC, and very good showers, i.e., great water pressure. The hotel is located just within the historic center city walls; they have free parking-which is often hard to find in Portugal; there's a cool indoor lounging area with relaxing music playing and free computer usage; they also have a lovely courtyard, where you can have a light dinner under the stars until pretty late - approx. 10/10:30pm. For example, we had some good Portuguese presunto/smoked ham, local cheeses, tomatoes, bread, olives, and a bottle of nice red wine.

Most of all, the owners, Peter and Nina, and their staff, are very gracious hosts, and go out of their way to engage with their guests and make them all feel welcome. We're looking forward to staying there again.
