“Great place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2010

This is one of the nicest hotels we have ever visited: rather like staying with charming but non-intrusive friends. We stayed in suite 4, which was simple, well-furnished and spacious: shortly after checking in, we extended our stay by another three days, having recognised we had found somewhere special. Breakfast, as commented on in other reviews, is to rave about: perfect poached eggs (free-range); fabulous Brazilian organic coffee; local produce including, when we were there, delicious Evora figs.
The staff are effortlessly helpful and friendly: they organised a car and driver to take us prehistory-spotting, and their restaurant recommendations were spot-on. Rather eccentrically we were travelling round Portugal on public transport, and they printed out for us times of buses we didn't even know existed (as accessible only in Portuguese).
Evora is a lovely, unspoilt, tiny walled city, and authentically Portuguese, unlike the Algarve. We enjoyed so much there: an exhibition of Francis Bacon drawings, tiled churches, atmospheric mediaeval alleyways, adventures with the cuisine and wine (both excellent). We hope to explore a different part of Portugal on another visit, and will build in a trip to this hotel as part of our travels.

Staying at Albergaria do Calvario was as pleasant as staying with a Family who's sole objective was making your stay memorable. Nothing was too much trouble and their knowledge of the town, restaurants etc is excellent.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable ~ the general living area is well decorated, comfortable & inviting. The breakfasts are fresh, healthy and generous.
But what brings all of this together are the people ~ they make the hotel a real find. Every member of the staff from the Manager to the housekeepers were always there to help.

For a hotel in a rural location, this one has style, sophistication and warmth. You may want to extend your stay by a day....we did!

The staff is very helpful and friendly, so much, that for my taste, a little bit less would be more. The place is well kept and nicely arranged in a beautiful building not too far from the center (10 minutes stroll). The town of Evora and the hotel are perfect for 2 to 3 nights stay.

We stayed at the hotel the last couple of days in September. The hotel was fabulous. The rooms were clean and spacious, the staff were exceptional with their help and making us feel at home, and the breakfast included numerous and various foods from breads and jams to french toast and omlettes. The location of the hotel is great, we had a car but parked it in their underground parking for our time in Evora and walked everywhere. We were upgraded to a suite as they ran out of regular rooms and it was very spacious, the bed was soft and plush, the only improvement I can come up with is more lighting in the bathrooms. There is a computer available in the lounge to check e-mails etc.

We stayed here on our way from the Lisbon area to the Algarve, as Evora is the most interesting place on the way. We were more than pleasantly surprised, as most ratings one reads are usually exaggerated one way or the other. We liked it so much that we stayed here on our way home, instead of booking something near the Lisbon airport.

The location is great - everything can be reached on foot. It is on a side street, so pretty quiet. We stayed in rooms 15 and 11 ... take 15 if you have a choice, as it is bigger and a little more romantic.

The staff were friendly and helpful, without exception. They helped with dinner reservations, with sightseeing tips. The bar and lounge areas, with free internet and lots of interesting design books to flip through, or the outside patio, are great areas to sit with a drink when recovering from sightseeing.

The free wi-fi worked well ... even for us non techies. Isn't it interesting that modestly priced, friendly and independent hotels always have free wi-fi, while one must spend an absolute fortune in the so-called 5 start hotels? The same goes for breakfast - paying 25 to 35 euros for generic breakfast just doesn't do it for us.

I think the breakfast buffet was one of the best ever, with lots of emphasis on local products and organic kind of stuff. Really very yummy. You could also order eggs or oatmeal and other things individually, even soy milk etc.

There was free parking within the building .... sort of subterranean. Wouldn't want to park a large car there, but all rentals are small anyway, so no problem.

We are going back to Portugal next year and will definitely stop over here, even if it is not directly on our route. Just wish there were more places like this one.

p.s. We stayed in the Hotel Britannia in Lisbon which was also a great choice.

My husband and I stayed at this wonderful hotel in September. I know it's been said over and over again, but it's true! This is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are quaint, the location cannot be any better, you have to see the breakfast to believe it and the owners Peter and his wife are wonderful hosts. They go out of their way to make your stay perfect. Only wish there were more places like this to stay in Portugal and elsewhere! Thanks Peter for a very enjoyable and memorable stay! Diana & Bruce.

Albergaria do Calvario deserves all the all of the praises received on this site. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and relaxed. Actually - even before we arrived. Owner Peter Brinkman responded to my enquiry about the most interesting route to Evora with a long personally written e-mail describing a number of options. Upon arrival, our bags were whisked quitely from the car up to our room while John at reception checked us in and listed some of the many highlights of Evora. The list of restaurant recommendations explained exactly why they were on the list and included descriptions of the ambiance, food highlights and even the personalities of the restaurant owners.
Our room was gorgeous, spotless and very comfortable. Breakfast was a real treat with mostly organic and local products and specialties. The pretty courtyard made us want to sit and relax but there were so many things to see in Evora and we only there for one night. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. It would be a wonderful place to stay for a week. However even after just one night, we felt so much at home that several of the staff came out to chat and see us off as we were leaving.
Evora has many attractions that are worth visiting, but Albergaria do Calvario is one of the main reasons to return. For us it was the highlight of Evora.
