1st I would like to transmit that once we got to "Cantar do Grilo" we feel at home. Felix has the gift of welcoming guests and treat them as "friends". Felix and Sonja spoiled us. I also have to mention the "very special breakfast", the best muesli in all world.Once thing it's for sure "I'LL BE BACK"

Coming back to Cantar do Grilo felt like coming home. The Hosts Felix and Sonja are very kind, welcoming and they treated us like family. (Whether they`re killing spiders for us or giving us tips where to eat in Serpa.) I even liked the dog! ;D
This beautiful place is located in the amazing landscape of Alentejo and seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, it is the best place to relax and get away from the rush of the cities.
After a super breakfast - You have to know I`m normally no breakfast-person--> but it was awesome - with homemade muesli, jam and oh-so-yummy-cheese, my friends and I spent the whole day on the terrasse. There we were reading, sun- or shadowbathing ;-) under the not-yet-full-grown olive trees and cool down by the pool.

All in all it is a trip I can truly advise not only for people who want to relax, but also for people who would like get to know this part of Portugal by hiking, cycling or canoeing :-)

Es liebs Grüessli us de Schwiiiz...

It was the 2th time we stay at cantar do grilo and we will return again for sure.
It is getting better and better. The sound of silence is exquisit, the bedrooms are beautiful and above all there is no TV. Thank God!
Sonja and Felix are improving the offers for the guests so we have no need to go to Serpa to eat something.
breakfast is fantastic with fresh fruits and just picked up from the garden. And toasts are more and more "al dente"

Since we arrived, me and my girlfriend, felt it was really the place that we were looking for a good weekend out of town and enjoy the most out of Alentejo landscape.
Everything was perfect. Felix and Sonja were fantastic hosts, and they know very well the Alentejo. They made us feel at home and, most of all with the desire to return early.
Already miss you, as all who visit the house, the wonderful muesli that is served at breakfast along with other typical products of the region.
The house is tastefully decorated, the rooms and house are very cozy and in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

We know it's a big statement : '" One of our favourite places in the world"
Travelled quite a lot in Europe and outside we found here a place where
we feel that we have to return at least to taste the spaghetti Bolognese of Felix
The first time we visited Cantar do Grilo was october 2010 for 5 days , in
may 2011 we spent 10 days .
Why ?? The landscape is abandoned , so untouched for the last 100
years , it 's a paradise for people who are looking for the real things and
not the cut clutter.
Felix and Sonja are the perfect hosts in this place.
Sonja : the kowledge of herbs, cooking ... Felix : the knowlede of the
region , companion for the guided walks and supplier of ideas...

First of all, having a retreat in Alto Alentejo, near Avis, i must say i find Alentejo the most beatiful area in Portugal...but Baixo Alentejo was never a must see spot for me...until i've spent some days at Cantar do Grilo! I had previously been in Serpa working before, but as soon as me and my girlfriend arrived, Felix and Sonja made us feel right at home! The little hotel is amazing, calm, beautifully decorated, built with old techniques from the area, and such a simplicity that you imediatelly feel you've made th right choice! The view is breathtaking, almost not a single house in sight, except the nearby farm, where the running horses even add to the overall beauty! I've already booked for the Summer (Felix advised us to do it with a few months ahead, because it is always full)...please do yourself a favor and spend some days there...and be amazed!
