“soooo relaxing!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2008

Just came back from a week's stay at De Balaia, and found the experience relaxing and full of things to do at the same time. The staff were exceptionally helpful and pleasant, and the food and dining arrangements beyond compare.

The room was spacious and exceptionally clean, and the separate toilet and bathroom facilities were very useful..There were a mix of people there from young children, young couples, middle age through to elderly. The surrounding areas were beautiful and easy to get to and the choice of shopping areas great, from gypsy markets to hypermarkets and modern shopping centres.

Taxis were cheap for short runs and virtually immediate. Really miss eating under the warm sun overlooking the white beach and blue Atlantic........ We are from Ireland, and only met one other Irish couple, and there was a lot of French language, but we got by very well.

My wife and I have just got back from a weeks stay at the Club and it was excellent, better than expected. Our first time to a Club Med and we were somewhat nervous of the 'Club' element.

Our focus was on golf in the mornings lazy afternoons around the pool or off site seeing. price wise, the club is better suited to gigher handicaps/improvers unless you have VERY deep pockets. Balaia Golf Village has a lovely 9 hole Par 27 course, very demanding for such a small course and beautifully laid out with lots of water.

22 Euros for 9 holes (30 Euros for 18 holes). Friendly bar/clubhouse and great value.

The Sheraton Pine Springs is also 9 holes but Par 32. A super layout but more expensive at 48 Euros. For the budget conscious, mix and match the two and your money will go far.

The 18 hole courses are expensive; around 150 Euros for 18 holes and H/C of 24 needed on most.

The excursions are expensive but you can save money by hiring a car. We rented online; a 2008 model 207 Estate was waiting for us at the airport. 88 Euros for the week, unlimited mileage and insurance included. The same car booked through Club Med cost friends we met there 168 Euros for the week.

The visit to the Grots (caves) was amazing. Cost was 39 Euros each but they refunded 14 Euros each because we drove ourselves and then went on th visit other areas. We did that for several excursions and recovered the car hire cost in 4 days.

Rooms are good clean and spacious (although slightly dated) and the food is excellent. Huge quantity, good quality and excellent range of choices. The house wine is excellent!

The staff could not be faulted; I have no idea when they get to sleep but I never heard a single 'whinge' from them.

All in all great value, we really relaxed and are going back next October, meeting up with new golfing friends we made this week.

As it was a 4 Tridents village, we expected quite a lot but were really disappointed. The building is really ugly like the ones built in the late 70's, the mattress was really awful (really hard) and the bed was "noisy". When we were there it rained and there were 22 rooms with water in it and you could see towels everywhere in the building...

There were also few interesting sports, I went there for the golf, as it was mentioned they have pitch and putt and driving range. But in fact the driving range has a net 3 meters and the pitch and putt is really not interesting at al...

The food was not exceptional at all neither.

I've heard they'll refurbish it this winter, which would be very good as it really needs it. Maybe it'll be better afterwards.

I expected a lot from this trip and was not at all disappointed. The hotel and its facilities were top notch and the restaraunt was fantastic.Whether you want to go on an active exercise filled trip with golf tennis archery etc. or a totally relaxed holiday with food drink and just the sound of the waves for company, then this is your destination.
The hotel staff were brilliant and the events organised by the staff were both plentiful and enjoyable.
We did however have one small problem with the resort and that was the language barrier. Both me and my wife were aware that french is the main language in use for this particular hotel, but we hoped that with our limited knowledge we could scrape by,and thats just about what we did.The staff have english but its pretty limited also.
Please don't get me wrong i loved loved loved the place but its just that both me and my wife who are very social people found it very difficult to interact at the bar or club, and unless you have a very good understanding of french you can get a little lost at the social functions in the hotel as they sometimes forget to translate things for the english speakers.
That being said we would go back next year with no hessitation only this time we will both make sure to have a proper grasp of the language and though we travelled alone this year as we were unsure of the facilities,we will bring our 3 year old next year as the child minding facilities also appear to be exellent.
By the way we travelled from Ireland and met only 1 other irish person 1 scot (brilliant craic) and just a small scattering of english so bring your french because you will need it.

Loved it!! This is not the sort of place to go if your looking for 21st century architecture; quite the opposite! Its a 1980s building that full of character and the experience was great. The club lays on lots of food and drink and there are always activities to keep you occupied. Great especially with families.
