“Wonderful Stay at the Rocamar”
Reviewed 14 September 2011

My husband and I have just returned from a two week stay at the Beach Hotel Rocamar. This hotel is stunning and you would be hard pushed to find one in the whole of Albuferia of a similar quality and location.
We stayed on the 4th floor in a non sea-view room. The room was immaculate, cleaned daily with beds so comfy and clean that we missed breakfast a number of times!
Breakfast is held between 8.00-10.00am and caters for all with an assortments of breads, jams, cereal, coffees, fruit, squashes, cold meat, cheese and fried eggs. Bacon and sausages were on offer on alternate days.
The hotel spa and gym is located on the 1st floor and really should be taken advantage of! The Jacuzzi and steam room are located in a relaxing, dimly lit separate room. There are 3 treatment rooms and a separate sauna and gym. Guests at the hotel are able to use all these facilities for free and can enjoy a 10% discount from the list of treatments available. My husband and I both chose the head massage which was €15 each prior to the discount.
The bar area downstairs looks out at the sea, with the seats located outside popular on an evening. Inside, there is a pool table and games machine, along with a small hotel library as many hotels have from books accumulated from guests. Comfortable sofas with plush cushions and soft lighting are also located there.
Lunch can be purchased from both the pool bar and downstairs bar, with the usual salads and burger chip options. Similarly the bar is open in the evening with these options again as an alternative menu to the restaurant.
We ate in the restaurant twice, which offers 20% discount to hotel guests however were a little disappointed. Two mains are offered buffet style along with a salad bar and small dessert station. Whilst there was nothing wrong with the quality of what was on offer, a menu rather than buffet would be in better keeping with the rest of this high standard hotel. The majority of guests ate elsewhere, however this may be due to the excellent food on offer in the old town rather than the lack of choice in the restaurant.
In terms of location, this hotel is incredible. The old town, with cobbled streets and an amazing night time atmosphere is literally a 5 minute walk away. All food preferences are catered for here, from traditional Portuguese food (peri-peri chicken and cataplana dishes) to more typically common foods such as Indian, Chinese, Italian, Irish and many burger and chip type eateries. The town is heaving on a night time, with places packed, street entertainment and trinket shops and stalls staying open late; the atmosphere is lovely.
The pool are of the hotel is perfect, with an infinity pool providing breathtaking views over the ocean at all angles. As others have mentioned, no matter what time of day, we never struggle to get two of the high quality sun loungers. There are no umbrella by the people, however the majority of loungers are positioned under the over hand of the balconies above which provide shade if you prefer.
The each below the hotel is pretty but has sharp shells and stones in the sand. The ocean is absolutely freezing with it being the Atlantic Ocean and not the Mediterranean Sea. After a few trips to the beach we decided we had all we wanted at the pool side, comfy free loungers, a clean and cool refreshing pool and an ocean view minus the sand in our bits! Oh and a clean toilet nearby.
We were a little confused about past comments regarding the staff as with the exception of the young bar man who was a little on the subdued side, all staff were polite, friendly and very talkative. We rented a car for the day the staff helped us arrange this and provided good advice on a number of our queries i.e. taxi prices to the modern town, trip advice and so on.
Our car rental was €45 for 24 hours. We visited Monchique in the hilltops inland which was quaint, Calas De Monchique, a small picturesque town with a thermal spa and a beautiful nature walk up the stream which is bottled on site. We also visited the castle remains at Silves, and the sand sculpture exhibition in Pera before taking the A22 to Faro. We do not recommend Faro which was very urbanised and not very attractive. We visited to see the Chapel of the Bones in the city centre, however arrived 30 mins late as the chapel shuts at 5.30pm.
Looking at the other reviews, just a few things to add. The hotel does not provide tea and coffee making facilities, nor a fridge for your room anymore. A hairdryer is provided, along with shampoo and shower gel. There is an internet enabled computer in reception at €1 for 10 minutes. Aircon is free of charge in the rooms and highly effective, brrr! Safes are available for rent at €1.50 per day. The pool turned our white bikinis/swimsuits yellow, however this washes out. The temperature really drops during the evening and you will need a cardigan/jacket.
We cannot recommend this fabulous hotel enough. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff, location and the facilities on offer.

Have just spent one week at the Rocamar Hotel with my 13 year old daughter. I found the hotel to be in an excellent location, right on the beach and a two minute walk into the old town. The rooms are very clean with the towels changed every day. The hotel is on a cliff overlooking the beach and the view from our room was spectacular. You can get onto the beach either in a lift or by walking down the steps. The breakfasts were absolutely fine serving the sort of thing you'd expect: eggs, bacon, sausages, nice coffee etc and hams and cheeses for the Scandinavians. Only complaint really was the juice isn't fresh, more like cordial. Just don't be late they close the restaurant on the dot of 10am.
I found the staff to be quite pleasant, not over the top friendly but certainly very civil.
The girl who works in the Spa is lovely. I have a great manicure there for €9. Really recommend that.
The town is really overwhelmed by tourists and eating in the town square was really chaotic and quite expensive with not very good food and bad service. After a couple of attempts eating there we found a great restaurant right on the beach, the Esplanade du Tunnel where we ate every night after that. Not crowded, lovely sea views and good food and lovely waiters.
If I went back to Albufeira again (and I probably won't - just too busy) I would stay at the Rocamar.

Amazing can't fault this hotel, ignore any previous comments about poor customer service, this was definitely not the case. The staff couldn't have been more friendly/ helpful, happy to give us directions, happy to answer any questions we had, happy to help! The room was great, definitely ask for a sea view and a room at the end of a corridor too, we had a decent sized bedroom and bathroom and a small corridor between them, the space was amazing! The cleaning staff were excellentThe pool was small, but had amazing views. The hotel is right on the beach, is best to pop down before breakfast and put your towels down on a sunbed if you want it otherwise you find they have all gone by the time you get there. The sunbeds and umbrellas are 14 euros (for 2 beds) and you can stay all day. The algrave shopping centre is nearby, we had a car so it was fairly easy for us, not sure about the buses, but good for a bit of shopping. The spa is lovely, and free if your staying in the hotel, as well as a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna they have plenty of treatments on offer too, book in plenty of time though, she gets filled up quick! Brilliant hotel and if we ever visit Portugal again we shall sure to stay here again!

Room Tip: Sea view is a must!!

just arrived back thursday 18th aug 2011, bit apprehensive re previous reviews. my partner and i were half board for 10 days and loved every thing about the rocomar, the food was good apart from fish every night u had either pastas or meat, potatoes of different kinds, plenty of desserts to choose from,if u are half board u have to pay for u r drinks at dinner. large bottle of cold water 2.50 euros which we found ok for a hotel. the staff work 24/7 and dont have air conditioning in resturant which can be difficult for them running about. our room was cleaned every second day with change of towels, air condition is excellent in rooms. pool small but comfy to swim in first thing in the morning. didnt have problem getn wicker sunbed. we got friendly with some of the staff and found them pleasant as most reviews found some of them grumpy. excellent location for the square as this is where it all happens, this was our 5th year back at portugal and will defo go back to rocamar, this was the next best hotel to the paraiso hotel. we visited the marina this year and found this very nice went on boat trip to locate the dolphins which we thought we wouldnt see, 2 and half hours we were out , and there they were, around 10 of them swimming and jumping out the water showing of for us, amazing well worth it. we booked this through our rep at the hotel. rocamar do not have fridges to hire which was advised to us we could before travelling only drawback, thanks rocamar for our pleasant stay and our friends who were there 3 weeks ago will go back also....

Hotel was spotless, rooms cleaned everyday. On my way to the airport, after checking out, I realised I had left a gold bracelet in the room. I emailed the hotel when I got home and they posted it on to me straight away.

Room Tip: request a room on a higher floor as very noisy people traffic at 4 and 5am when people returning fro...

Excellent location just minutes away from the centre of the old town and tucked nicely away from the busy area. Room clean and well cleaned, good air conditioning, comfortable bed. Could do with a mini fridge, but you can’t have every thing. Food OK we had only breakfast as the town was very close with all the amenities for evening time. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Good value for money. If we are in Albufeira again no hesitation in stopping at the Rocamar.
