My husband and I have just returned from a two week stay at the Beach Hotel Rocamar. This hotel is stunning and you would be hard pushed to find one in the whole of Albuferia of a similar quality and location.
We stayed on the 4th floor in a non sea-view room. The room was immaculate, cleaned daily with beds so comfy and clean that we missed breakfast a number of times!
Breakfast is held between 8.00-10.00am and caters for all with an assortments of breads, jams, cereal, coffees, fruit, squashes, cold meat, cheese and fried eggs. Bacon and sausages were on offer on alternate days.
The hotel spa and gym is located on the 1st floor and really should be taken advantage of! The Jacuzzi and steam room are located in a relaxing, dimly lit separate room. There are 3 treatment rooms and a separate sauna and gym. Guests at the hotel are able to use all these facilities for free and can enjoy a 10% discount from the list of treatments available. My husband and I both chose the head massage which was €15 each prior to the discount.
The bar area downstairs looks out at the sea, with the seats located outside popular on an evening. Inside, there is a pool table and games machine, along with a small hotel library as many hotels have from books accumulated from guests. Comfortable sofas with plush cushions and soft lighting are also located there.
Lunch can be purchased from both the pool bar and downstairs bar, with the usual salads and burger chip options. Similarly the bar is open in the evening with these options again as an alternative menu to the restaurant.
We ate in the restaurant twice, which offers 20% discount to hotel guests however were a little disappointed. Two mains are offered buffet style along with a salad bar and small dessert station. Whilst there was nothing wrong with the quality of what was on offer, a menu rather than buffet would be in better keeping with the rest of this high standard hotel. The majority of guests ate elsewhere, however this may be due to the excellent food on offer in the old town rather than the lack of choice in the restaurant.
In terms of location, this hotel is incredible. The old town, with cobbled streets and an amazing night time atmosphere is literally a 5 minute walk away. All food preferences are catered for here, from traditional Portuguese food (peri-peri chicken and cataplana dishes) to more typically common foods such as Indian, Chinese, Italian, Irish and many burger and chip type eateries. The town is heaving on a night time, with places packed, street entertainment and trinket shops and stalls staying open late; the atmosphere is lovely.
The pool are of the hotel is perfect, with an infinity pool providing breathtaking views over the ocean at all angles. As others have mentioned, no matter what time of day, we never struggle to get two of the high quality sun loungers. There are no umbrella by the people, however the majority of loungers are positioned under the over hand of the balconies above which provide shade if you prefer.
The each below the hotel is pretty but has sharp shells and stones in the sand. The ocean is absolutely freezing with it being the Atlantic Ocean and not the Mediterranean Sea. After a few trips to the beach we decided we had all we wanted at the pool side, comfy free loungers, a clean and cool refreshing pool and an ocean view minus the sand in our bits! Oh and a clean toilet nearby.
We were a little confused about past comments regarding the staff as with the exception of the young bar man who was a little on the subdued side, all staff were polite, friendly and very talkative. We rented a car for the day the staff helped us arrange this and provided good advice on a number of our queries i.e. taxi prices to the modern town, trip advice and so on.
Our car rental was €45 for 24 hours. We visited Monchique in the hilltops inland which was quaint, Calas De Monchique, a small picturesque town with a thermal spa and a beautiful nature walk up the stream which is bottled on site. We also visited the castle remains at Silves, and the sand sculpture exhibition in Pera before taking the A22 to Faro. We do not recommend Faro which was very urbanised and not very attractive. We visited to see the Chapel of the Bones in the city centre, however arrived 30 mins late as the chapel shuts at 5.30pm.
Looking at the other reviews, just a few things to add. The hotel does not provide tea and coffee making facilities, nor a fridge for your room anymore. A hairdryer is provided, along with shampoo and shower gel. There is an internet enabled computer in reception at €1 for 10 minutes. Aircon is free of charge in the rooms and highly effective, brrr! Safes are available for rent at €1.50 per day. The pool turned our white bikinis/swimsuits yellow, however this washes out. The temperature really drops during the evening and you will need a cardigan/jacket.
We cannot recommend this fabulous hotel enough. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff, location and the facilities on offer.
