Just back from a week here and we had a fantastic holiday. Ok - the hotel is a bit old and dated in places and could do with a spruce up in parts but its really quite charming and quaint. Lovely bar area with comfy leather seats music and dancing every night. Huge room on the 4th floor fantastic views of the sea. we also made good use of the fridge for wine and cold water etc., Staff were helpful and polite at all times. Only moan was the food - we were bed and breakfast and were dissapointed - its not 4 star for food. Having said that we always found something to eat . Ofcourse there was cerial and toast and always eggs but the food on display seemed to have been cooked a few hours before. So moans over - - We had a ball, met some great people, danced the night away and can't wait to return. Don't listen to the complaints about this hotel - go there and experience it for yourself but then lets not tell to many people because it might become so popular we might not get in next time!!!

We have stayed at many hotels from all round the world from Hawaii to Hong Kong and this hotel beach wise, is the best. The hotel, although clean and tidy, needs an update .We have been three times in the last 15 years ,same decor ,same layout . The staff are very helpful and friendly and have always been. Rooms are spacious with great views ,are kept clean and linen changed regularly but a little bit of T.L.C on the decorative side would go a long way.Lounge and bar very comfortable and entertament was enjoyable.Would definately return.

We stayed at what we thought was a 4 star hotel but it looked very tired and in need of refurbishment, Our biggest disappointment were the evening meals which were over cooked and tasteless. The one big plus is its position and outlook to the bay which was worth the money we paid.Sort the food out and it would be worth a recommendation !

Got back yesterday from a weeks stay at the Sol e Mar with my Fiancé. We stayed in room 415 on a B&B basis. The rooms are large with plenty of storage and are clean. The beds are comfortable and we slept each night without any problems or noisy neighbours. The bathroom is of a decent size as well. Beds we made daily and sheet changed twice weekly. towels were changed on a daily basis. The room need 2 things a) updating and b) tea making facilities.

Breakfast is served in the breakfast/restaurant room, The room is okay with good sea views, breakfast was sufficient for us, we had tea and toast but there choices were rolls, hams, chesses. yoghurt's, cereals, fried or scrambled eggs, German sausages, bacon and toast. There were plenty of people going for 2nd's and 3rd's!!

The views from the large balcony are excellent, looking over Penaco beach, the sunset restaurant etc etc. We took a walk down to the indoor pool which wasn't appealing so we gave it a miss. The hotel bar is very 70's retro and very expensive e.g. 4.40 euro's for 2 small lager shandies!!

The location is also a big winner, only steps away from the bars and restaurants of the old town. The Sol e Mar is NOT a 4 star hotel but a good 3 star hotel and I would recommend staying here

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at Hotel Sol E Mar in April 2010.

On arrival at the hotel the entrance was understated - plain but still attractive. We reported to reception and after a short while going through the usual formalities we were given instructions to get to our room. I have to say our first impression of the room was not great, it was a bit fatigued, in need of updating a bit; however once we had unpacked and left our room and explored the area a bit we saw the bigger picture and realised how lucky we were to have found such a gem. The hotel itself is slapped on the front of a cliff with a beach in front of it, an amazing beach. You enter the hotel at street level and go down in a lift to the rooms and beach level. All the rooms have a sea view and balcony. The hotel bar is like something from a James Bond movie from the 1980's; I really enjoyed sitting in there in the evenings looking at the amazing lighting above the bar area. There is also a balcony facing the sea which runs the entire length of the bar.

To summarise: this hotel is a remarkable building in the best location on the beach. The old and new towns are within walking distance where there are loads of places to eat and loads of bars. We stayed bed and breakfast and the breakfast, served buffet style, was definitely worth getting out of bed for and more than adequate for all but those who like to be fed chocolate whilst having their feet massaged. Our room more than satisfied our needs and facilities in the room were more than adequate. Our maid Paula was efficient and made sure that all was well in the room. The reception was well staffed by smart, efficient and helpful personnel. The beach can be reached via the hotel lift and is fabulous and not overcrowded. During our stay in April 2010 the weather was variable but sunny and warm enough for us to sunbathe on the beach.

To finish: I personally really bonded with this hotel as like me, it is getting on a bit and had its peak in the 80's which, for me, is its greatest appeal as there is still a lot of life left in me and this place brought out the best in both my husband and I, we had a wonderful time here and plan to return to the area and stay in Hotel Sol E Mar. I hope that any attempt to refurbish this place is done with taste and does not detract from its original style too much.

Firstly I would like to say that we thought this hotel was fantastic.
We booked through lowcost holidays and got a really really good rate on a bed and breakfast sea view room. I have been to albufeira many times but this was our first stay at the Sol E Mar.
So what can I say, well the breakfast...traditional continental breakfast with four types of bread, croissants, sweet cakes, a toaster, at least four types of cereal, 3 varieties of cooked food which changes everyday, jams honey, butter, fruit juices, milk, water, meats and cheese, tea and coffee, you get my drift, anyway there is plenty and it is constantly being refilled. My partner fell in love with the bread rolls and I have to agree that they were tasty. Served between 8 and 10 so not too early if you aren't an early riser.
Rooms were well equipped with everything that you would need, we requested a double bed and got two twins pushed together as is the standard in warm european countries...if you want an actual double bed don't go to a hot country! Bathroom had shower over bath, toilet, bidet and sink. There were plenty of towels and complimentary toiletries. Room contained desk and cupboard space which had a hanging rail and lots of shelves, there was also a fridge which was great for keeping some sandwich fillers and beer in! Room was kept very clean, in fact couldnt keep the maid away, she was very eager and very friendly, even happy to just exchange wet towels if we were still in and she came EVERY day!
Reading other peoples comments about ants I would like to point out that they are common in the algarve, however we saw none inside the hotel. If you store your food correctly, ie. anything sugary/sweet in the fridge and everything else in packets you will be fine, just as you would in the UK come to think of it!
Noise was fine, this is the atlantic ocean however so do be aware that its not a calm ocean. You will hear some wave noise, the hotel is very literally seafront. I found it very calming actually and was lovely to hear, but I guess its personal preference.
Every member of staff we came across was lovely, they even happened to notice that it was my birthday during my stay when they scanned my passport and wished me a happy birthday on our way out which was very nice of them. The reception are willing to help you make phonecalls if you need it, can book excursions for you and help with directions etc, the barman is cheerful and friendly, the waiting staff smiling, and the maids as I said, eager.
The bar was very nice, cheaper than we anticipated and they have a cocktail of the day for only three and a half euros which is very well priced. Two access points to the hotel, beachfront, and one through reception. Also a snack bar restaurant and an ice cream bar open during the day. Very well located for everything in the old town of albufeira and also a very quiet hotel. Lively enough but seems to attract more mature clientele, which although we are a much younger couple was nice as we knew we could go to bed at night and not get disturbed by drunks. Atmosphere in the bar however was very nice, although entertainment gets a bit 'samey', but who wants to spend every night in the hotel though!
Only thing I will say is that the hotel pool does require a little renovation, it is fine, but you can tell it has been a while since it has been spruced up.

All in all a fantastic holiday made better by a great hotel and will definitely come back when we return to the algarve.

this hotels facilities do not rate 4 star. The windows didn't keep out the wind, the heater in the room didn't work.
Everything looked outdated and worn out. The meals were quite bad ,edible ,but not good quality.
we found the local cafe owners to be quite rude and although the weather was cold they didn't like you to sit inside their cafes.
