This is a lovely hotel if you want peace, quiet and relaxation with other like minded adults. Transfer from the airport is around 35 minutes once the coach leaves and we were the first of 3 drop offs and the last pick up on our return.
On arrival the hotel welcomed us with a glass of either sparkling wine or orange juice whilst the small queue checked in.
We then went up to our junior suite and our cases followed on with one of the reception team. We had requested a high, quiet room overlooking the gardens and were not disappointed. Our suite was as pictured in the brochure: a little dated and the bathroom in need of a refurb, which we understand is going to happen over the next couple of winter seasons. But it was scrupulously clean and comfortable. We were on the 3rd out of 4 floors and faced west towards Albufeira, overlooking the garden and ponds: this is worth noting as the other garden rooms face east and have a less expansive view.
Because we had upgraded to a suite, there was no charge for the safe but we did have to pay for the fridge. However, we had bottled water replenished daily, a small bottle of wine and a plate of fruit on arrival and towelling robes and slippers.
My tips for the room would be: take your own hairdryer if this is important to you as the one provided in the bathroom is worthy of the "Antiques Road Show"; take pegs for the balcony airer, as it does get windy and small items can blow off, only to be found in the garden later; take a wrap or light cardi for the evenings, as sometimes the wind is cool; and if you are a light sleeper ear plugs are useful against the noise of the air-conditioning unit.
We found the food both plentiful and varied and there were always chefs in the restaurant which was a nice touch. There is an opportunity to look round the kitchens, if you are with Thomsons, and these are clean and well managed.
The restaurant is large and never felt crowded. We chose to sit outside for breakfast, if there was no wind or in the far end of the room which was lighter. Here you could squeeze your own orange juice: delicious. For our evening meal we sat in the near end of the room: this is darker and has a more intimate feel.
All the staff are friendly and approachable and seem to go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The hotel, bar and restaurant managers and head chefs are often visible and equally friendly. The outside bar is nice during the day, with a half price happy hour from 5-6pm and is a good place to have an after dinner drink.
The pool area and gardens are as shown in the brochure.
The entertainment is the one area that we felt lets this hotel down. The resort is very small, with a few bars and eateries so most guests rely on the Thomson organised activities. During the day the team provide the usual good fun games and quizzes. But the evening entertainment is of a low quality and lacks variety. It would be nice to have something other than vocalists, singing comedians and tribute acts.
We tended to walk down to the beach and enjoy the sunsets and rock pools, including the fascinating "eyes of the water".
There was a good mix of ages here, although I suspect that the average age increases in early and late season, but it is a quiet hotel and resort. Those with restricted mobility may struggle outside the hotel, even though there is a free bus to the beach, there are still steps to manage.
The hotel also runs a bus service to Albufeira old town and Vilamoura for a reasonable charge which is a nice touch.
