The Hotel
The Brisa Sol Hotel where we went is an aparthotel so you can go half board if you want but we went self-catering so we can only give our impressions from that viewpoint. We went for two weeks starting 1st of September 2011.
Location
This is perfectly placed as far as I’m concerned with a Continente supermarket next door, Pingo Doce supermarket across the road with McDonalds, KFC, Chinese, a Pharmacia etc. etc. in the Bellavista Centre and Lidl a 15 minute walk away but well worth the effort in many ways.
The tourist train stops over to the left, almost outside the hotel near the pasteleria, which is excellent but a bit pricey (another one up the road past Continente is good and cheaper although this one under the hotel has a huge range of stuff!)

Further up that way there is an excellent Chinese Restaurant – Hong Kong Restaurant I think it’s called plus there are one or two little bars but further up still (about another 15 minutes’ walk) is The Strip, Albufeira’s nightclub / bar areas for the younger ones. It’s OK but if you are older than 25 you really stand out!
Mind you, I bought an excellent pair of Chinese-made leather shoes there for 15 euros!!
They have a little beach down there too and it’s a hell of a walk back up the hill in the heat but the tourist train takes you to the top of the Strip for 2.5 euro each. Get a day ticket at 4 euros each though then you hop on and off where you want because from there it’s down to Fisherman’s Beach and the Old Town.

Beaches.
There are two escalators there to take you down to beach / town level then you have a maze of streets to explore and three squares, the biggest one being the hot spot at night for all sorts of things like street entertainers and musicians.
We went to a Portuguese Restaurant around the back of that square and it was traditional food, unlike most of the others that cater mainly for Northern Europeans – definitely worth the effort but not cheap unless you happen to love Chicken Piri-Piri, which is on EVERY menu, wherever you go!!!!

The old town takes a fair bit of exploring and there’s a few steep hills here and there but we went right out to the new marina and it’s nice there too – certainly works up a thirst though! We felt the hotel’s location was absolutely perfect with the main bus station 15 minutes’ walk up North from the hotel plus bus stops for Vilamoura, Faro etc. just across the road.
From that bus station you can go almost anywhere, even Lisbon but at Ferreiras there is a railway station and that’s 7 kilometres North of Albufeira so it’s a taxi ride away but you can go to Lagos in the West or Faro in the East but we didn’t try the trains this time and never actually saw one!!
Buses.
We did go to Lagos by local bus and also to Vilamoura but Vilamoura’s a purpose-built resort and there’s not much there really. We met people on holiday there and when we told them about Albufeira they were really envious because they said it was boring in Vilamoura!
Lagos is quite big but we just went to the old town and marina – not enough time for all of it. We also went to Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Cacela Velha, Vila Nova de Cacela, Mont Gordo, Vila Real de Santo Antonío and across the border to the outskirts of Ayamonte in Spain on a tour with Follo Me Tours and they were excellent – and cheaper than Thomsons own tours. Paradise Tours was another good one and you can book up with both of them in Ticket Shops all over the Algarve. Sun Tours were not so good and we found out the hard way on a half day tour – too many people and delays so we got far less time at some places.

Costs.
Everything was more expensive than we were led to believe, especially food so shopping around is essential but we came back with €250 believe it or not and we didn’t scrimp by any means.
Eating out could be expensive but the same thing applies and local restaurants were just as good food-wise but a good 15% cheaper sometimes.
Menus were Western European / Portuguese but easily understood. In locals restaurants portions could be quite large in the snacks but main meals are usually smaller as you are expected to want at least two courses as a rule so if you didn’t, specify “largo” or you’ll get a small one!!
Beggars.
There were quite a lot of beggars around everywhere, which surprised me, and they could be a bit much at times – right in your face demanding “coin” so we got around that by telling them that I was a policeman!
As for crime we never really saw any evidence although there was some graffiti around but bikes could be left anywhere and not be touched which is NOT the case in Spain these days!
Overall Impression.
We’d go again but not yet because we saw a lot of the Algarve but found Albufeira suited us the most. We are a couple in our very early sixties but quite fit!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Continente supermarket can be subject to noise so if you are on Floor 2 like we were or above it's best. The advantage of this that the sun's not on this side later in the day so if you come in hot and sweaty you don't need the A/C on and can sit out on the balcony!

The hotel is lovely. The Apartments are spacious and extremely clean. We had a 1 bedroom apartment. We paid a little extra to have an apartment overlooking the pool and it was well worth it, could also see the sea. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We didn't eat at the hotel as we like to try different restaurants. We would recommend going down to the Old Town, about 10 minute walk, there are many to choose from. Supermarket next door, so not far to walk. The pool outside was clean and there were plenty of sunloungers to go round. The indoor pool was like walking into a warm bath, wonderful. A very relaxing and much needed holiday enjoyed by all. Would definatly return.

Room Tip: Have a room overlooking the pool

Having just returned from a week at the Brisa Sol, I can honestly say that all the good reports on this hotel are justified. The location is ideal for the Old Town and Strip. The Hotel and grounds are spotless with a large pool, excellent sunbathing area and poolside quality cafe/bar at reasonable prices. We did not use the dining options, having studio facilities for a light breakfast and eating lunch locally ( mostly at the poolside cafe or brilliant bakery which has a sun terrace overlooking the pool area ),then eating at one of the many good restaurants in the old town. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful at the hotel.
I would not hesitate to book here again if returning to Albufeira.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a pool and sea view although people staying in road/supermarket view rooms told me these were still quiet at night.
