“Montechoro ....would go back in a heartbeat..”
Reviewed 16 May 2012

Having not visited portugal before now I was unsure what to expect.
I need not have worried.
Firstly the Portuguese people are among the friendliest and hospitable I have ever met.
We stayed in the Montechoro region of Albufeira.
Old town is stunning with an array of restaurants too numerous to mention, all in competition with each other. The touts will try and get you to eat at their (place) but a smile and a friendly word will get them to move on.
The Beach front has amazing restaurants all cheaply priced, booking not a requirement.
The Old town at night is a hive of activity with music coming from all quarters. You could not be in a bad mood in this place.

We stayed in a private apt.at the Choromar..lovely place but a little to far out from the beach. Everything was clean but we had to endure 3 stag parties for 3 nights lots of drinking around the pool with a good dollop of bad language thrown in for good measure. Families with small children had to leave.
Would advise to check before you book these apartments if there are stag parties happening during your stay.
\having said all the above the area has a lot of positives.
Really loved it.
P.s.
Taxies are reasonable but buses are cheaper.

Room Tip: Top floor advisable as you will not be too disturbed with the noisy crowds after dark.

My husband and I spent 3 weeks at the Choro Mar over Easter. We were very pleased with our one bedroom apartment. It was spacious and had good facilities. It was cleaned regularly and everything in it worked. The apartment had its own water heater so we always had enough hot water for showers. We found a supermarket with a bakery and deli counter just a few minutes walk up the hill, near to the Montechoro Hotel, so we were able to cater for ourselves adequately. Apart from the bar at the Choro Mar, which does a good range of dishes, it is a 10 to 15 minute walk to other restaurants. This might not suit everyone but we enjoyed being in a residential part of town.
The outdoor swimming pool was heated and though we didn't swim there was nearly always someone enjoying the water. We made good use of the sunbeds as the pool area was cleaned daily.
The staff were friendly and spoke good English. The shuttle bus ran twice a day at 11am and 3pm into the old town of Albufeira. We then had a good walk back which took about an hour. The nearest beaches to the Choro Mar are about 15-20 minutes walk but are worth the walk for a sandy beach.
We booked our holiday with lowcostholidays.com and all the arrangements worked well. We were able to choose our airline, flight times and number of days in Albufeira. It was cheaper to fly out on a Monday and return on a Tuesday so we were able to book the apartment for a 22 night holiday. We also booked the airport transfer through lowcostholidays and the whole package was excellent value for money. We would recommend this holiday.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra to stay in the main block if you are going to use the swimming pool or bar regula...

All my family have been going to the Choromar since it opened in the 80's, most years theres an average of 12 to 24 people travelling together with us, made up of family and friends.
Over the years we have met lots of lovely people from over England and Scotland and we like to meet up at the Choromar at least once a year, we certainly wouldn't do that if there was anything wrong with place.
You can't fault any of the staff from the owner Carlos, his wife Saija, his sister Graca, her husband Manuel. Jesus reception.Francisco bar, Fatima bar, Helena head housekeeper and all her cleaners, they all deserve a mention for the jobs they do.
It is a bit out of the way if you don't like to walk, but the place and staff more than make up for that, nothing is too much trouble for any of them.
We love it! Vicki Clarke from Oldham Family and friends

Room Tip: All the rooms are good, we usually have several one bed apts and a 2 bed apt in the main block

me and my hubby as just returned from a weeks stay in choromar... we were happy with the hotel. we stayed in B block which was out of the way of the pool/bar and restaurant as it got noisy. The hotel staff are very friendly and do anything for you! The old town is lovely but do agree with others reviewers about restaurant touts. The strip, well i cant say it was a strip there isnt alot there. The strip is about 15-20mins walk from the hotel lovely walk but if u want to get a taxi its only about 3.90euro. The beachers are lovley we had a long walk right along the beachs there snt alot to do even on the night.. Overall we would recommened it as a budget hoilday, although we wont be going back.

The apartment was very spacious and clean but stank of a recent fumigation. The staff were OK but got very defensive when we queried why a party of 8 booked together were in totally separate parts of the complex. It was my daughter's hen weekend and took some of the shine off it. I would like to go back to Albuferia, just not that hotel.

We have just returned from a weeks stay in Choromar and overall we were happy with it. We were staying in block two, which suited us perfectly as it was away from the main block with the bar/restaurant and pool. It meant it was much quieter for getting little ones to sleep in the evening. The apartment was very spacious and well equipped with kettle/toaster, oven and microwave. Although the cooker was very tempermental and hard to operate. The maids came in at least 3 times over the week and gave a general tidy up and clean towels which we thought was very good for the price we paid. My only issue would be that the bedroom was quite cold in the evenings and we asked for extra blankets that never appeared. We used the main (heated) pool every day and found it clean and we were always able to get a sunbed. Our block had its own pool which was unheated and it was far too cold to use. I guess in mid summer the temperature would be better. The complex is quite far away from any of the beaches/bars/shops but as we had a hire car this didnt matter. We loved the small Oura beach and had no problem finding parking close by. The old town is lovely but I agree wth the other reviewer about the restaurant touts, irritating and persistent. Overall we would recommend it as a budget holiday and although we wont be back- we did enjy our stay.

Room Tip: Block 2 is good for families as its away from the main bar/ music in the evenings.
