“We are into double figures”
Reviewed 2 October 2009

Once again we have just returned from the Choromar and we must now be in double figures for our visit to this friendly establishment. Yes I will agree that it may need some refurbishment in the rooms but this is more than complimented by the warm and friendy welcome you receive from the staff. No doubt we will be back next year.
The lady from Dublin who wrote a recent review surprises me. Did she not make her feelings felt whilst she was staying there so that an attempt could be made to resolve her problems. On the occasions where I have encountered problems, a word with the relevant staff member has rectified the problem.
The difficulty is that some people are harder to please than others.

I stayed at the Choromar back in June 2008 when I wrote another review. Over a year later standards have remained pretty much the same but I think they have slipped in certain areas.

Rooms are spacious, clean and tidy with good facilities for a self-catering stay like a television, cooker, microwave oven, ironing board, telephone, etc. Bathroom is clean and tidy with a good shower. The room had a balcony view over the pool. The apartments are arranged into blocks and each block having its own pool. There is a main pool area with an attached bar. The bar has large flat screens showing sport, serves alcoholic and soft drinks and has a limited menu of food.

The location of the Choromar in relation to the main bar and restaurant area (known as The Strip) is about 15 minutes walk or 5 Euros in a taxi. This might be problematic for some people but the reception will call you a taxi if you request it and it means you are located in a quieter area away from the noisy bars.

The biggest downfall is that it looks like people are choosing to go to the main bars on The Strip and the entertainments and food offered at the Choromar are a little below the standard I would expect. There is entertainment on every night but it is limited to things like Karaoke and Club Singers doing tribute acts which might not be to everyones taste. The menu here is limited as well and we felt they used cheap ingredients so we always tended to eat elsewhere.

Despite this I still think the Choromar offers a good standard of self-catering accommodation which is value for money if you can do without the extras on site like food and entertainment.

We found our accommodation in this hotel to be of a very high standard and marvelled at the space and equipment provided. Due to our flights we arrived at 11.00am and the staff did all that they could to get the room ready as quickly as possible for us.
We didn't intend to eat at the hotel but they had a varied menu at very reasonable prices given that they had a fairly captive audiance.
It is a bit of a stroll to the strip and if it is hot this takes it out of you, it takes 10-15 minutes. To compensate the hotel does provide a coutesy bus to Oura Beach and the Old Town. I love the resort and have been before and will go again but only due the location would I not chose this hotel as in every other way the standard was high.

Me and my partner are 29 and 30 and have stayed at various 5* all Inclusive hotels around the world but I have to say for the cost of this self catering hotel we thought it was great.

On arrival our room's were not ready but that was due to us having a super early flight and we arrived prior to check in time so all was fine. We waited in the bar and the lady came to find us when it was all ready. When we entered the room I was plesently suprised by how spacious and clean the 1 bed apartment was. I can even say as the week wore on we were tempted to sell our 3 bed house in England and move out there into our 1x bed apartment it was that nice. The telly was an added bonus, after being at the pool all day it was nice to have a seista or watch a bit of ITV while getting ready for the night time. they also had BBC 1 and a couple of movie channels. The kitchen was great and one night I made a lovely dinner and made use of the dining table. The bathroom was huge.

We were positioned in the furtherest block from reception but I have to admit that it was the nicest pool and although you would have a treck to the main reception for drinks we found that by going to the supermarket down the road we not only saved money but we only had to pop to our room for refills.

Our block also had BBQ that you could use.

The staff are soooooooooo nice and would bend over backwards to help you and Pedro was the life and soul of the Karakoe.

Yes the apartments are quite far away from the old town and the strip but your on holiday a nice 15 min walk or a £3 cab is not that bad for the price that you pay to stay.

All in all we loved it!!!!!!!!! and instead of going back to Cyprus this October we have booked to go back with 8 others and best of all I booked the hotel seperate for 8 nights at an amazing £76 per person.

Anyone that has something to moan about at that price must be mad!

We stayed in these apartments in late May early June. They are not at all suitable for families especially with small children or young teenagers. Honestly I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, unless you enjoy the company of middle-aged, tattooed all over man, drinking heavily at 11 am and discussing their run ins with the police, stay away from this place.

Our room (10B, If I remember correctly) was very old and tired two bed app, though considering we paid 50euro a night it seemed like a fair price. Both bedrooms and living room were in desperate need of refurbishment, while the kitchen was recently done up. The kitchen had all the basic equipment, but do bring your own cloths, sponges etc and washing up liquid and soap.

We had a sliding door into the back garden off our bedroom, the lock on it was broken and a wooden stick was used to keep it locked!!!!! The sockets in both bedrooms were hanging out of the walls and a few times when we attempted to use them sparks came flying out, extremely dangerous with kids and toddlers.

The main pool is beyond tiny and crammed!!! And considering the crowd hanging out by it, myself and the husband only went up there once or twice for coffee.
Needless to say we never even bothered going to the bar in the evening as put nicely it just wouldn’t be our type of crowd.

There are absolutely no facilities for children at the hotel, there is no baby changing anywhere.

The food at the bar was edible, but not all of it. Breakfast was ok, as well as croissants, once or twice we tried burgers and pizzas and they were rotten. The meat in the burger was so hard I could barely bite into it which indicates it was warmed up at least 3 times.

As some people have mentioned previously, the lady who works in the shop tried to short change us every single time we were there, at least by 5 cent.

On the upside on our last day we ended up staying in a single bed app, on the ground floor in a block separate from the main building which has been recently done up and as far as I am aware it is the same price as the two bed we stayed in, the best part of this app is that it has direct access to another swimming pool. Which was quite and we didn’t spot anyone from the hotels ‘usual crowd’.

The hotel staff provided acceptable level of service, they were there to answer any questions, were pleasant and mannerly, exactly what you would expect from hotel staff, nothing to get excited about.

The so called gym is a small room with a few machines from the 1990s if not older and two were broken, how they dare to charge for it is beyond me.

Regarding the resort itself, I was surprised to find that most restaurants offered more meat dishes (not local, usual European stuff) on the menu than fish, and that considering the sea is mins walk away. Though for all those who go abroad and still demand the usual burgers, pizzas, steaks and chips this place is a paradise. We found the prices to be very reasonable and adequate quality of food in all restaurants we visited, mind u we didn’t go near any dodgy looking places.

All in all the only people I would recommend this place to are those who are planning to rent a car and travel around the area and only need the place to sleep in. They do offer one of the cheapest rates in the area, but do make sure your room is as far as possible from the bar as it is extremely noisy.

I would never go back there again, and will stay away from apartments altogether in the future.

Just back from The Choromar Apts. Staff were all very courteous and helpful but I must give a special mention to Victor who drives the courtesy bus to the Beach and Old Town Albufeira. Accommodation was OK - pool at Block 2 could do with having weeds, broken tiles etc. removed. There is no scenery across from the hotel entrance only barren scrub land. It is about 25 mins walk into town. It was a cheap stay and we did enjoy ourselves but we will not be going back to that Hotel.
