“Favourite place ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2013

My favourite place ever .
We love Olhos , it's a little fishing town on the edge of Albufeira, quaint and unspoilt .
Small beach in the town but longer ones either side so don't be dis allusioned.
Many restaurants , traditional , Chinese , Indian , and our favourite Fratellis Italian.
Not a huge amount of bars but enough if you are not a party person and just like a nice bar.
Oceanus is lovely we stayed here 3 times now, big apartments , modern , they have indoor and outdoor pool ,
The staff Paula , Fernanda and jakleen are so nice very chatty have loads of time for you everyday , don't think you can slide through the reception without stopping g for a chat because you can't.

Transfers are quick only 25 minutes drive we tend to use yellowfishtransfers. Com they are reliable , ok price are not one of these shuttle things that take everybody and stop everywhere its just your family in the car.
Lots of cheapy flights these days so easy to book and so you can poke around the prices and AIrports.

We stayed at the Oceanus while attending a family wedding. The hotel was in an ideal location, being 400M from the wedding venue, on the main street through the small town of Olhos d'Agua and , having read a previous review on Trip Advisor, we opted for even numbered rooms on the ground floor in the main Oceanus building - no street noise, no boozy youths shouting and making a nuisance of themselves and certainly no noise from the other guests.
The rooms are spotlessly clean and are visited every day except Sunday. The refurbished bathrooms are certainly up to UK standards - clean, good water pressure and lots of hot water.
We didn't eat-in, apart from a couple of brunches when we used supplies bought from the supermarket which is a 5 minute walk away, and cannot comment on the microwave/utensil issues. The crockery and glassware was all in good condition and the kettle and toaster worked fine.
The indoor pool was a real boon, as the early April wind was brisk and made swimming in the outdoor pool less enticing. The table tennis facility was also well used when we had an hour to kill; buying your own bats (2 bats & 3 balls for 11 Euros) makes more sense than renting 2 bats for 30 mins at a cost of 3 Euros.
The hotel bar offers excellent service at very reasonable prices.
The hotel staff are very friendly and very eager to help out with their local knowledge. Always polite and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.
All in all, a lovely traditional Portugese hotel offering very good value.

Room Tip: Even numbers avoid the noise

Just back from a week at The Oceanus and after staying in the block next door we had our expectations raised. The room itself was a bit dated and cramped for 4 people, it would be ideal for a maximum of 3 people. All in all it is still a good 3 star hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful

We had booked for the Oceanus, but were put in the Olhos D'agua Aparthotel next door as they were renewing the bathrooms in the Oceanus. As they opened part of the way through our 3 week stay we ended up actually staying at both, so will be reviewing both. We had a studio for 2/3 in the Olhos D'agua, separate kitchen with microwave, two electric rings and toaster and electric kettle. The beds could be closed off during the day by a bamboo screen, but we chose to leave it open as it made the room a little dark. Nice wide window to the balcony with a dining table and 3 chairs in front of it. Two very comfortable easy chairs and a TV with BBC 1 and 2, plus the occasional film in english. Our room had an odd number which meant we only got the sun until about 11am, Get one with an even number for sun during the afternoon. Although we were near the road this wasn't a problem, the road was not that busy whilst we were there. We found the studios quite quiet both day and night so no problem sleeping. Not a lot of utensils if you want to cook yourselves, and although there was a microwave, not many dishes to use in it!
However we quite liked the studio, but when the Oceanus re-opened we were offered a one bedroom apartment on the 'sunny' side, so decided to move.
Here although we had a separate bedroom, the kitchen was in the lounge, with the TV just to the side of it on the wall, so if you were cooking you did get in the way of the TV. There were no easy chairs here but a bed settee to sit on during the evening, which was quite hard and uncomfortable. However the balcony was lovely and sunny during the afternoon, there was a door to this both from the lounge and the bedroom. Again in the kitchen area, a microwave and two electric rings, many more cooking utensils than the studio, but again no dishes to put in the microwave. We did find the Oceanus much more noisy, the sound seems to echo around, people banging doors and children crying, you could hear the slightest noise. The worst thing though was during the last few days of our holiday, youths collected opposite the apartments and were talking, drinking, shouting, laughing way into the early hours of the morning, till 4.30am one time, it was really very noisy and sleep was almost impossible.
Overall, apart from the noise, we did like these both these apartments, they were very good value for money, they were cleaned every day apart from Sunday, towels changed 3 times a week and sheets once a week, and the cleaners did a very good job, it always smelt lovely and fresh when we returned to them.
Olhos D'Agua itself is a very pretty resort, not very large, but some lovely walks along the cliffs, and you can walk along the beach to Vilamoura, it takes about 1 1/2 hrs. It is hilly in places, but there are various routes to get back to the apartments, so no need to get out of breath.

Room Tip: Even numbers get more sun

Stayed here in June 2012. We originally booked with the Oceanus sister hotel but it was booked out and we were moved to Oceanus. This was a shock to begin with but when we arrived we were given a suite instead of a studio, which was a lot bigger and more spacious. The decor in the rooms is slightly older and more traditional but in saying that it is extremely clean! The place is spotless! Staff at front desk are lovely, the remember who you are and build a relationship with you throughout your stay and are extremely helpful with directions, taxis and places to go. Pool is lovely and clean and never too packed ! Pool side bar is delicious and really good value ! Local beach two minute walk away is handy but always very busy ! So head down early ! Only downfall of the hotel is that it's slightly outside of the two main towns and definitely need to get a taxi to get there. Also slight distance to the bigger more popular beaches ! Altogether had a good stay and would recommend the hotel !

Room Tip: Request a poolside view!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2013

I had originally booked for Oceanus because in January-March 2012 I had spent some evenings in the bar there with friends and it seemed very nice. I also liked the idea of an indoor pool. I was informed that my booking was being moved to Aparthotel Olhos d'Agua because Oceanus was being refurbished and, having checked that the indoor pool would be available, I agreed to the change. Later we were told that this building is called Oceanus 2 and future guests will be accommodated in either block, Although for part of the time I was going to be alone, I did have an apartment for 3 people for 6 weeks as I was being joined by a friend and later my daughter and grandson.
We did not arrive until the early hours of the morning because of snow in England and Mario, who welcomed us, was really great - he even gave us some oranges as everywhere was closed.
Our initial impressions were good as the apartment was warm and we had a beautiful wrap around balcony with sun beds, chairs and table and views to the sea and into the hills. The inside was spacious and spotlessly clean. My daughter was delighted with the free wi-fi.
My first disappointment was not having a bath and I understand that the "refurbishment" in the main building includes removing the baths there as well. the shower is good with plenty of hot water, but it is slippery, so I bought a shower mat from the Chinese shop. As there was no bidet, it was back to the Chinese shop when my grandson arrived for a washing up bowl to get the sand off his feet and legs.
The beds are quite hard, although not intolerable, but the balcony lights come on automatically and cannot be turned off if you have an early night. As the bedroom curtains don't quite shut out the light it is a bit irritating. there is no mirror in the bedroom.
I had expected that the 3rd bed would be a bed settee in the lounge and so we would have adequate seating; however it was a bed located in an alcove just inside the door and opposite the bathroom. That was fine, but it meant we only had 2 armchairs in the lounge when we watched TV [as the apartment actually had 4 beds I found the shortage of chairs unsatisfactory].
Storage was an issue. There was the usual large wardrobe [not enough hangers] with a 3 drawer chest, a tiny drawer in the bedside table, and 6 shallow drawers spread out in the bedroom, lobby and lounge. the kitchen cupboards looked adequate, but I could hardly reach the top shelf and half of the under sink cupboard was taken up by a built in waste bin. i felt as though I never got organised! There are plenty of pans, but the frying pan is not very good as everything sticks. All the preparation knives are blunt - when will self catering places start to sharpen them, because they are really dangerous when they don't. There was no sieve/colander and nothing to lift things from the frying pan - back to the Chinese shop. Good job it's just across the road!
For cooking there are only 2 rings, but they do work well and I was able to make soups and stews etc. It is a pity they are located in the darkest corner.
The location of the apartments is good. the bus stop is outside and taxi rank across the road. There is a very good small supermarket a few steps away and the larger Intermarche about 5 minutes walk. The Portugese restaurants that stay open in the winter are near as well. The simplest way to the beach is very steep, but there are 2 alternative routes with steps or a more gradual way coming up past the Riu and round, which is a little longer.
I was really looking forward to staying at Oceanus and I did enjoy it, but I also found it disappointing and am not sure whether I would go back. Apart from Mario, on the first night, the staff were not over helpful, although they did everything the way they should. Possibly they were bit fed up as a lot of people were complaining. The best thing about it was the indoor pool, which we used every day. It is just the right temperature.

Oceanus is being refurbished but its sister building is fine, friendly and the rooms are good.
We stayed in February twice and are here in March now. The price has been a bargain and a much better choice than many others in the area BBC 1 & 2 internet that works downstairs, a kitchenette for home cooking all close to a cracking beach area.

Room Tip: A room with a balcony is a good choice 3 euros extra from hotels.com
