“Excellent Apartments for a quiet holiday”
Reviewed 15 June 2009

Loved this place. No under 16's meant this was a completely relaxing stay. Peace and quiet by the pool, no night time noise, no loud music. Fernando keeps the whole complex immaculate, and is available everyday should you have any questions. Maid service everyday except Wednesday. Nearest restaurant and bar a 2 minute walk with excellent food. Plenty of other restaurants and bars within 10 minutes walking distance. Beaches in this area are stunning, you could walk within about 30 mins but we hired a car for the week when we booked with Style Holidays. This is not a place for people who want wild nightlife or shopping trips. It's a totally chill out place more suited to older travellers.
Can't wait to go back.

We have just returned from a week at the Flor Do Vale Apartments. This being our third visit. We had another lovely time and would definitely recommend them.

The Apartments are a converted villa just on the outskirts of Albufeira in a place called Vale de Parra. They are in a quiet area which was ideal for us as we wanted to chill out and relax during the day. I would recommend hiring a car, as we did, so that if you want to go anywhere more lively, then you also have that option. Also the nearest supermarket would be a trek in the hot sun!!

The apartments are advertised as for adults only (over 16) and we booked through Style holidays. I think they would be too quiet and too far out of the resort for teenagers or couples looking for a lively holiday.

Fernando, the owner, is very nice and helpful and the pool area is lovely. The downstairs apartments have a veranda that opens out onto the pool area which is very handy when nipping in to get a cold lager from the fridge!!

As there are only approx.11 apartments, the area is quite intimate and we made friends with a number of other couples while we were there, which resulted in us all pitching in for a barbecue (borrowed from Fernando) on one particular night.

While the apartments themselves are not particularly modern, they are kept clean and are quite spacious for 2.

There are a number of restaurants approx. 5-10 minutes walk away. The Girassol (Sunflower) Restaurant is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious. Also, in nearby Guia the Ramirez serves delicious Chicken Piri Piri at a very reasonable price. We ate in Albufeira (old town) one evening at the Casa de Fonte which was lovely, but a bit more pricey.

For a reasonably priced week away in the sun to relax, it couldn't be faulted!

LOCATE - we booked mini-bus transfers from Faro airport. Approx. 45 mins. A car is 'recommended', as the brochure says, but not 100% 'essential'. As it was just a week, we managed without. However, we'd def hire one for 3 or 7 days if staying any longer. Other people felt isolated. Other people? This is sold as a 'villa with pool' holiday but actually has 11 or 12 units, grouped in a crescent around a decent-sized but little-used great, clean pool. For over-12s only. Not sure why, but it's not near to a beach -see later. However, there were no young people at all while I was there, and I think they'd be pretty bored unless in a large party.

Albufeira is only 12-15 mins by taxi, though, I believe - did not venture there. I believe there are 2 parts to Albufeira - the nice OLD Town/marina, and the modern 'strip' with pubs, clubs, football on TV, etc - but huge, great beaches for kids. 'A bucket and spade place' as someone told us.

If travelling by car to Flor do Vale, I would highly advise getting detailed instructions and maps to the property. Roads very quiet, even at the weekend, and UK drivers said it was a good driving experience. If completely lost, maybe look for Salgados Golf Course. The course is set on the flat lands behind the sandy beach of Praia de Galé and is a couple of miles from Flor do Vale. 5 or 10 mins by car from there.

ACCOMMODATION/AREA - the pictures tell the best story. On 2 levels, top level reached by imposing staircase. Low levels reached by curved corridors with windows - see pic if I remember to add one. Very clean, very spacious indeed for 2, slightly retro but that wasn't a problem. I thought the brochure decription of-4 star was fair - local rating is, I think, 3-star. Maid service nearly every day and linen change twice a week or more. (Self catering, with proper oven and hob, fridge - all you'd need if you didn't eat out.) Outside - most low-rise apartments in this area are strung out along a small reasonably busy road. 2 storey max., it seems, everywhere, but still very developed in places. Some aparments/villas are set back, some are very near to the road. But Flor do Vale, luckily, is 300 steps from this road, and extremely quiet - quieter than you'd expect. Empty fields to most sides (unusal), with just a few local tiny houses/cottages nearby. Friendly locals! You'll hear barking dogs (twilight barking, 101 Dalmations-style) for a while every night; and cockerels in the morning if you sleep light. No problem at all to us, though.

BEACHES. What follows is a walking guide. (Cars would take just minutes, and I think it's free parking everywhere)...We tried 2 beaches, all an hour or so slow walk away. This could be a prob for 'non-walkers' without cars. We just took our time in the early June heat.

BEACH ONE - CASTELLO. Go to main road. Go RIGHT. Go right, after the supermarket (Atlantic? Oceanic?) after 10-15 mins, heading to Castello beach. It's sigposted. You'll soon pass a smaller supermarket on the left. Buy some water if you've forgotten some. Go up slight incline for 15 mins to mini-roundabout. More-or-less straight on, past a few shops (bars, hairdresser) on the right, where you can sit in the shade and have a cool drink. Caryy on and, at T-junction, slightly left, then right towards the beach. (There is a diversion to another small beach that we had no time to try.) Smallish, cute, typical yellow stacked cliffs, expensive-ish cafe perched on clifftop. We preferred this to the bigger, but still good, Galé beach (next).

BEACH TWO - GALE. There are short cuts, saving 10 mins walking, to this one. (See later.) This is the long way, for cars, or sturdy walkers who like straightforward routes: Go to main road. Turn LEFT. Go 5-7 mins, past chemist with time/temperature clock, to mini-roundabout. Go left again. (Signposted, but quite hidden.) Just keep going and follow your common sense, but there are a few twists and turns. You may have to ask for directions. Don't try to 'go scenic' by going straight on at the mini-roundabout and then going left at the large Salgados Golf roundabout, as you're just doubling back on yourself and adding 30 mins to the walk. Gale beach - quite big. Plenty of room (in early June). Cafe much cheaper than Castello beach. Friendly service. Umbrellas, loungers, windbreaks for hire. Expensive to hire the lot for a day - about 15 Euros/£15 Uk pounds/30 dollars, I think, but not sure. I think there were canoes, etc to hire, too.

SHORT CUT 1 - turn left as you leave the complex's electronic gate. (Zapper, aka remote control, is supplied when you arrive.) Cut 200 metres/yards through the open fields on the path towards the back of the petrol/gas station. Go up their slope (they don't mind), turn left for 5 mins, to the mini-roundabout. Then as above. You have saved 10 mins.

SHORT CUT 2 - even quicker, go sharp RIGHT as you leave the gates .ie. following the more-or-less hidden sign inside the property, doubling back down the side of the property. After 5 mins, road swings to the right. After 5 more mins, past giant cacti/aloes, you reach a small T-junction. You have cut off a large triangle from the route and saved 25 mins. Go left for c.30 mins, following your common sense, to Gale beach.

RESTAURANTS/BARS/SHOPS - similar to above, go sharp RIGHT as you leave the gates .ie. following the more-or-less hidden sign inside the property, doubling back down the side of the property. After 5 mins, road swings to the right. After 5 more mins, past giant cacti/aloes, you reach a small T-junction. Straight opposite is a mid-price restaurant. (Very popular indeed but for some reason we were not impressed.) To the right of this are more - Indian (called Karahi?), a cake shop, a Sunflower restaurant. Did not try these. Further along (you are heading back to the mini-roundabout) is a fine minimarket on the left, and a VERY CHEAP BAR/OFF-LICENSE (take-away alcohol)/BEACH SHOP trio on the right. Recommended for take-away or dit-down drinking! It has 2 terrapins in the bar's small water fountain, so good for kids. Ice creams, too.

Nearest restaurant to Flor do Vale - Casa di Carne. (Don't let the name, House of Meat, put you off! Unless you're a vegetarian.) Walk from Flor do Vale to main road - you will see the back of the restaurant easily. Go to main road, go left for 100 yards. Quite expensive, but we went 3 times in a week as the food was great, it was 'upmarket' and the sunset views from the 'conservatory' at the back were quite good. (Conservatory not obvious.,so you may be seated in a darker, cooler area unless you walk through to the back.) 2 steak meals, bottle (not carafe) decent house wine, 2 beers, dessert for 2 = 45 to 50 Euros. Worth it as: a) you're on holiday; and b) it saves 30 or 60 minutes' walk !

ITALIAN RESTAURANT. Good, and cheap, but the 45-60 min walk tired us out. Go to main road. Go left to mini-roundabout. (Or use the short cut described earlier.) Go STRAIGHT ON for 20-30 mins. Restaurant is on right, next to a (disused?) primary school. Looks a bit jaded from the outside, but is rustic and cute inside. Young waitresses x 3 are either English or speak English really well ! Very pleasant all round: service, meal, atmosphere. 30-40% Cheaper than the much nearer Casa di Carne.

There are other restaurants around. We stayed in 2 nights, enjoying the night-glow villa garden (see pic if I remember to upload it) and moon, and ate out 5 nights.

Hope that helps ! I could not find much info before I booked this late holiday with Style holidays, so hope this helps you find your feet. Or car tyres. I was extremely lucky to be online at the right time when this expensive property (usually about £5-600 per person in high season) dropped overnight from £230 to £160 per person. This was about 3 weeks before we travelled. Airport transfer (speedy, luxurious aircon Mercedes mini-bus), booked at same time with Style was £25 (50 dollars) each. (£12.50 each way, each. Worth it.) We pre-paid for a food welcome pack at £25 - 6 beer, bread, butter, jam, loads of stuff. Also worth it for your first day.

Booked last minute at local travel agent and travelled with 'Style Holidays'. Appartments were very spacious and clean. Two twin beds in the big bedroom with large wardrobe and pull out bed in lounge (so three of us were comfortable). Plus there was a wardrobe just off the lounge near the bathroom, very handy.

Appartment cleaned daily, additional charge for safety deposit box. Owner very helpful when the toaster didn't work. Appartments also had 3 bbqs to borrow, fab. Ground floor appartment terrace very big and shady, then we had the grass in front to use too. Large comfy sunbeds with cushions. Nice and secure with gate round complex and well looked after gardens. Def need a car; best supermarket 5 min drive.

Trips - took advantage of Rep organised boat trip which took us up the coast and then we had a scrummy BBQ on a private beach.

Would def., go back to Portugal (was our first time) and would go back to these appartments - check out [--] for excellent priced last minute deals

Not that we don't like kids, you understand..... I think the reason is the pool may be dangerous as it's deeper than normal.
Good quality self catering accomodation, kept spotlessely clean, in a very quiet location. Great for couples who just want to do their own thing and don't need reception staff 24/7.
The Manager, Fernando, is very friendly and helpfull, but once he's settled you in and offered you a welcome drink, you're left alone to enjoy the holiday.
Only downside, you'll need a car, or be prepared to walk a distance for a choice of restaurants and bars.
2nd visit, not the last. (Accommodation only booked through Style Holidays UK)
