“First time in Portugal”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Vila Gale Atlantico for our honeymoon. We were there for and entire week and the whole stay was amazing. The hotel is VERY family-friendly...which made us worry at first since we were celebrating our honeymoon! However, we let the staff know it was our honeymoon before we left for the trip and they situated a quiet room for us away from the noise children can make. They even left a bottle of champagne and fruit for us upon check-in...very thoughtful and completely unnecessary! The pool was gorgeous, large enough for the amount of people, about 200 yard walk to the beach, house-keeping was above and beyond everyday cleaning our room and keeping the entire grounds beautiful. The staff spoke English very well, there are two public computers available with internet in the lobby...that is how we kept in touch with family. There is a shuttle that runs 3 times a day (at no cost) to take you to Old Town Albufeira (beautiful, historical). There is a spa, indoor pool, Jacuzzi, and steam room on the grounds. We used the spa services for a full body massage and facial; very relaxing and Very well priced.

I am totally shocked by some of the reviews I have read about Vila Gale Atlantico Hotel. We have just returned from a week there and myself and my whole family can not fault the place. The rooms were lovely and clean, the sheets and towels were sparkling white. The staff were fantastic and very helpful. We were all inclusive and the food was great too, Obviously the hotel is in Portugal so the food has Portuguese influence! Breakfast had full continental selection as well as fruit and cooked items, all meals were served on a buffet basis. Lunch was good with plenty of choice and in the evening there was always the choice of 2 meats and a fish dish, served with the option of plenty accompaniments, including chips, salad, veg and rice. obviously if you want English food you maybe need to book a holiday in England. there was a wide range of drinks available, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and bottled water too. from 10am to 6pm you could order toasties and sandwiches from the pool side snack bar too. Dessert was amazing at both lunch and dinner. The free bus service was good and you do pre-book your tickets at reception. We are already looking to book up again for next year. The pool was fantastically clean and each morning was thoroughly cleaned and the water quality was tested. The PH levels were displayed on an information board. This is a family hotel, so if you are looking for a hotel with no kids about you maybe need to look for an adults only resort!

Stayed for 9 nights from 11th August.

Really cannot fault the hotel. I was very aprehensive upon arrival, after having read other reviews but we were really pleased with the hotel, it's food, location and general atmosphere. Everyone was very respectful around the poolside when we went, the pool wasn't overcrowded or plagued with inconsiderate people jumping in / splashing everyone. The children mirrored this and though clearly playful in the pool, parents were watching and ensuring pool was enjoyable for all.

When there weren't any sun beds late afternoon, we used spare chairs from the outdoor restaurant or the grass areas. There was always plenty of space for us, particularly in the pool. Visited lovely local beach twice and remaining beach visits in Lagos (definitely prefer this area to Albuferia). Went out to see the Dolphins in the sea and a boat tour of Lagos beach (plenty of companies running sessions from Marina de Lagos.

Breakfast was superb, plenty of fruit, bread, jams, scrambled egg and bacon (very fatty compared to english bacon). Open till 10.30am...with a few arriving just before then.

Had 3 meals from Ala Carte menu, and arrived promptly, and delicious.

Rooms cleaned every day, toilettres re-stocked, fresh towels, quiet at night so good nights sleep.

Definitely will go back

I agree with the precious reviewer.. Feeling like stayed at different hotel to the negative reviewers.
We are family of 3. Our daughter 6 years. Had really lovely relaxing time. Not many British staying- maybe 3/4 families(maybe this was why there was not a sun bed issue)
Met some lovely Portuguese families who stay here from the North. Very friendly-some on their 15th year going.
Food lovely and fresh and always something different. Lots of fresh fruit choices.
Big winner for our daughter -Vast choice of ice lolly's and ice creams at pool bar-smarties/calippo/mini milk etc. all within your all inclusive, help yourself from fridge. Lady on pool bar bit unhappy in her work to say the least.
Lovely beach about 5 mins walk Down a little hill. Well worth it.
Nice breeze and lots of high waves.. Great non intrusive kids club/ 2 local girls. Craft, art, activities in the indoor pool. My daughter says best bit of her holiday was mivelda(one of the kids club girls.
Kids mini disco at 9-9.30. Daughter loved even though some foreign songs. Some fab entertainment- strictly come dancing style ballroom dancing, traditional Portuguese dancers.. A few nights but ropey guy on a keyboard.

Room adequate enough. Cleaned daily. Clean towels and sheets. Well equipt bathroom. No issues as previous reviewers. Do not be afraid if you have booked this. We had great time and would def go back. Our first time, but hope not last in portugal.

Incredible isn't it how you come back from a holiday that was hard to fault, then you read some other recent reviews of the same hotel and wonder whether the people who wrote those are either on a different planet, or went to a different hotel, or perhaps both!
10 nights here and the hotel is definitely worthy of it's 4 star rating - very spacious clean and well-equipped rooms, cleaned daily.
Service in reception, bar & restaurant uniformly excellent - staff were always polite and attentive & almost always cheerful & generally had a good command of the english language.
Great mixture of nationalities so we definitely knew we were abroad.
Outside pool could have done with being a bit bigger but it was clean and we never had a problem with sunbed availability - certainly the towel reservation issue was no worse than other places we've been to.
Use of health club, including gym, indoor pool, jacuzzi & sauna all free & of good standard.
As far as the food goes, some other visitors are obviously much harder to please as we found the quality and variety generally very impressive - daily changing main menu items, regularly replenished during commendably long service hours. Admittedly chips were available every single day which could have been varied, and some of the veg was obviously out of a tin, but otherwise fresh salad items, choice of soups, variety of fish & pasta dishes, meant we always looked forward to mealtimes. A nice additional touch is that you can opt for the a-la-carte menu on one evening with waited service, at no additional cost.
The location of the hotel is excellent - just 5 minutes walk from a typically superb sandy beach with clear & clean blue/green water. Very good supermarket nearby & in a relatively quiet attractive neighbourhood. 10 mins courtesy bus ride into Albufeira laid on 3 times a day.
The evening entertainment was mixed - some very entertaining dancing & magic shows some nights then 'live music' consisting of a slightly less than absorbing man and his keyboard on others. Yes the kids mini disco had the same songs & dances every night but this only lasted from 9 til 9.30 - never any longer.
Overall we would rate this hotel 9/10 - it is a family friendly hotel so if you don't like children don't go there!!

I arrived to the Atlantico on the 15th July for a week. When we arrived at the hotel we were told that are room was not ready so we went straight to the restaurant for some lunch. The was a choice of two soups and a range of meats. The food was not very warm. Once we arrived in are room we were on the first floor facing the pool which was handy for putting your beach towels on the sun beds in a morning. The was not many sun beds provided for the amount of people that were staying in the hotel. Many people would keep towels on beds all day and not use the beds half of the day so I would advice you to put towels down first thing. At the time we stayed at the hotel we felt a little isolated as there was few English people around, mainly Spanish, German and Portuguese. We noticed that some of the food that was on at dinner time would be on again at tea time (vegetable soup and chips). People were coming into the restaurant in the evening with shorts and vests in. Limited entertainment in the evening and screaming children running around the reception area. It is a quite area were the hotel is situated and had no choice but to stay at the hotel in the evening. Will we be going back there? Not in July to busy and full of children however we have come back more chilled due to there being nothing to do during the day and at night.

Just returned (26/7/13) after spending 11 nights here. Supposed to be a 4star hotel, more like a 3 star. On the first day of arrival it was lunch time, both my wife and I went into the buffet restaurant and promptly walked out, the food looked terrible and un-appetising. Evening meals were just as bad (ok if you like frozen chips). Out of the 11 nights we could only eat 2 of the meals, Creamy veg soup (On every night) was not too bad though. We were all inclusive and we felt we were treated like pond life. when we asked for a large glass of Rose we were told that only small glasses were allowed for all inclusive, there was no indication on the bar menu what was all inclusive and so therefore we had to keep asking what we could have or not have. They advertise a courtesy bus into Albifeira but it was only an 8 seater transit and once the tickets were gone that was it, you can not pre-book this bus. We found most of the restaurant staff very miserable and you were hard pushed to get a smile from them. The entertainment was abysmal, it was all geared towards kids, there is only one small area where the entertainment took place which was the main bar area, Screaming kids were running around everywhere unsupervised, this was also the same in the restaurant, Swim shorts and vests was the usual apparel for evening meals, something I am not used to I'm afraid I got a bit fed up of hearing the wheels on the bus go round and round nearly every night, and this is at 10.00pm. On one occasion we could not get to the bard for kids sitting on the bar stools Most nights we felt like slitting our wrists as there is nothing to do or anywhere to go local to the hotel. On a plus note the 2 barmen (Ricardo and his pal) were spot on, we couldn't fault them, Would I recommend this hotel ? definitely NO
