We stayed for four nights and booked through travel republic and got the whole holiday (return flights from Gatwick, 4 nights accom with breakfast and transfers from Faro) for 340GBP for both my husband and I.

The hotel is in a good location, very close to the main square and not far from the beach. We had requested an ocean/pool view and were very impressed with the view which looked out over the pool and the main square and had ocean glimpses (as we were on the second floor). The hotel is definitely nothing flash but it does the job - it's clean (and cleaned daily) and has comfortable beds. We had no problem with noise and definitely don't have anything to complain about for our room. Our friend however stayed in the 'old part' which hasn't been renovated yet and he didn't have air conditioning and it was really hot at night.

There are a few things that I'd like to point out:

First thing I would say is do not book the transfer option through travel republic! The transfer was on a coach and took 2.5 hours to get to our hotel (for a 30 minute journey). The coach was full and stopped at nearly every hotel possible along the way, with our hotel being the second last stop.

Second thing is that if you are going to book a private transfer through the hotel make sure you get confirmation of what time they booked it for you, even if you told them what time you wanted it. We didn't want to waste our last day sitting on a bus for the transfer so booked a private transfer and told them we wanted to be picked up at 2pm as we had a 4pm flight and had already checked in online so only had to get through security and onto the plane. They ended up booking us a transfer for 11.20am as they told us we needed to be a the airport 3 hours before! I told them it wasn't up to them and we just wanted the transfer booked and they ended up rebooking but it cost us 5 euros more (we paid 45 euros for the transfer for 4 people).

Third thing is don't get the breakfast option! The breakfast was very average and if you really want to eat it you can buy it for 5 euros anyway. However, there is a place across the road that does an english breakfast including coffee for 4.95 or toasties for even less. We had breakfast included (paid for in our package) but only ate it one morning as it was so bad. The croissants were stale and the only other option was 1 cereal and 1 museli and some bread with limited spreads.

We didn't eat in the main square as we felt it was way too touristy - too many British people who had obviously moved there for a change of lifestyle trying to get you into the restaurants. There are some good restaurants with locals serving just off the main square, you just have to go down some little side streets to find them.

Overall, this hotel did the job. It's certainly not the Ritz but I would definitely stay there again, especially for the price we paid!

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in July. The hotel is set slightly out of the centre of town, but is only 5 minutes walk from both the town centre and the beach. Be warned, if you are either lazy, unfit or not able to walk very well you may find the trip back up to the hotel a bit too much like hard work. The room we had (104) looked out over the pool and towards the sea. There was a/c, a fridge, kettle and a decent shower, though the hot water was a little scarce at some points. It was cleaned daily and was perfectly adequate for us. The breakfast was fine, rolls, bread, cheese, ham etc, and there is also a bar at the hotel. There was a bit of noise during the night, but to be honest it's a noisy holiday resort so it shouldn't really be a surprise!

There are loads of places to eat in town, all pretty average, though we had a pretty decent meal at the Mexcian in the square. The beach is good, very busy, but sunbeds and shades were always available (10 euros for 2 sunbeds).

In summary, this is a pretty decent hotel for the price, if you want better then pay a bit extra!

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. On arrival we were met with a rather sour faced receptionist who was not as warm and welcoming as one might expect, however we were pleased with the room allocated to us (408) which had a nice view from the small balcony. The music from the bars could be heard till 4am, however was not a huge issue. The room was basic but clean and tidy and fresh towels were provided every other day. The square, bars and shops were a plenty and a 5 minute walk away as was the beautiful beach. I would certainly recommend this hotel to those wanting a cheap and cheerful break and hope to return there again some day.

Stayed for a week - basic but very clean and great location. Was worried we might be allocated one of those rooms below ground on the back road seen on photos on other reviews, so we emailed in asking if we could have a view and balcony - they couldn't promise anything but thankfully we got room 402, facing pool, town square and sea view . (built on the hill so level 4 is only one flight up from front reception, though there are lifts anyway). Room and bathroom were very clean - nice maids cleaned and changed towels daily. Tiny balconies but that's fine as there is a large roof terrace on level 4 with loungers and full sun all day, but gets breezy up there though so parasols not practical on roof - ours flew away. (There are also two other roof terraces on other floors) Don't know if all rooms have the same, but we had TV, AC, crockery, cutlery and a fridge - very handy even though we stayed B&B.
All rooms that faced the pool seemed to have AC. Many even numbered rooms faced pool and town square from level 0 to level 6. Small pool area, but don't know of any other hotels in the old town with large pool. (take wipes to clean the bird poo off the loungers) Music from the bars on the square is loud but stops at 4am. Might bother some people, who may prefer a room at the back. But if you switch the AC on, you can't hear the music that much anyway. Just 2 mins to the main square but it is a steep walk and cobbles can be slippery. Loads of places to eat and drink (and touts trying to get you to in). Zanzi's have really cheap specials, eg chicken w piri piri, or whole mackerel with potato and salad for 4.50euro. Paella nice there too for £10. Pastelaria Kambu near the Old Town bus stop is great for light lunch - pork steak sandwich 1.60euro. Plenty more expensive restaurants, but many of the 'specials' are the same at most anyway.

I recently visited the hotel with a friend on a deal of £199 each for 5 nights plus flight. For that sort of price you don't expect too much, but we were pleased with the hotel. The staff were pleasant and the rooms very extremely clean. Our towels were changed every other day, but unless you're going to leave them lying around the floor that should be sufficient for anyone. Our room was at the front of the hotel and I have to agree that the local music did go on until 4am one morning (and that was a "school night"). We also had to cope with people coming in at all hours drunk on one occasion, but by and large it wasn't too bad. Due to the noise it was necessary to keep the balcony doors shut and the air con switched on all night, which was a bit noisy but you get used to it. The beach, which was only about 10 minutes walk away, was stunning and the sea lovely to swim in. The local shops and restaurants were very nice and we preferred them to venturing down to the square which was full of theme-type pubs - not very Portuguese in character. All in all, you pay for what you get and I would certainly return to the hotel again.

This was our second visit to Vila Recife, my sister and I have stayed here in June for the past two years. It is great value and very conveniently situated. Hotel is very clean and tidy and staff are friendly and helpful - not the Ritz - but we only want a clean comfy bed and some breakfast! Excellent location for the old town, beaches and square. Must visit Bluebell Bar for a drink and Buddys restaurant in the square. Cannot wait to return.

Just got back from a 3 day break to Portugal and stayed at Vila Recife. It was alright - rooms were clean, however certain receptionist was rather stroppy especially when she found out we booked a transfer to the airport with the local currency exchange and not through the hotel - yet if she had bothered to mention transfers when she booked us in we would have taken her up on the offer! not a good way to go about business!! breakfast mmmm if thats what you call it with an upside down dead cockroach sitting next to you appealing! as for the location - ok i guess Portugal is a beautiful place but has been ruined by the english louts leering over young women that are old enough to be their daughters, chavs that are drunk out of their brains swearing and insulting the locals, teenagers who could well get in to trouble easily as drugs are being sold on a frequently! infact i saw a deal go down in the public toilets! nice! and the weird rolex guy who kept asking us if we wanted to buy one really needs to go! shows they have no respect for the familys with children! my boyfriend was offered drugs everyday and to be honest it gets tiring after a while! this place is all geared up for the brits though - if you fancy a home from home this is the place - not what i was expecting but from what i have heard this place has been ruined!! stop playing up to the brits and keep it rustic and pure! somehow i dont think i would be going back!
