“Definately not a three star!”
Reviewed 27 June 2011

We stayed at this hotel because of all of the positive reviews on tripadvisor and we were bitterly disappointed with our stay. There were four of us (all adults) and we basically wanted to get away from our stressful jobs for a relaxing holiday for a week in the sun. The hotel is very, very basic, our room had a lovely view but resembled a hostel bedroom. The air conditioning was so noisy and the fact that we were woken up each morning by builders next door drilling at 6am left us seriously sleep deprived by the end. Our room was cleaned once during our entire stay and we actually had to ask the cleaners for clean towels and loo roll after 6 days. The pool is very small but possibly the worst thing is the lack of shade! There are no parasols to shade you from the sun. Fortunately there is a tree that you can lie under (alongside of everyone else who is desperately trying to avoid getting scorched). To call the breakfast basic would be an understatement! Every morning we dreaded the breakfast line up. Breadrolls (which were mostly stale!), marmelade or sugar laden cereals (think cheap version of coco pops!). The staff had kindly laid out a platter of processed cheese and ham that by the end of the week were very obviously the same cheese and ham and were yellow and crusty. No fresh orange juice just diluted orange juice. By the end of the week we gave up eating breakfast at the hotel (as did the three other couples that were staying there who were also Bed and Breakfast). On the positive side the hotel is spotless and the staff are lovely and if you do want to spend a week literally doing nothing it may well be ideal. But personally for 50 euro a night I think its just not worth it. Think its probably worth paying the extra money out for a decent 4 star!!

Relaxing holiday in quiet surroundings. 3 local beaches within 5-15 mins walk, 2 very secluded and the third, Gale - 6kms of golden sands with very good beach bars/restaurants. Selection of local bars/restaurants to choose from if you come room only or bed & breakfast, although the food in the hotel is excellent and very reasonable. The breakfast could be more varied, perhaps some fruit and yoghurts in addition to the cereals and rolls? The hotel itself was very clean, rooms and beds cleaned regularly, although the bathrooms could do with updating but still functional. The hotel staff especially Martha, Merces & Helio vey helpful. One of the best whisky collections you will ever see! All in all a very pleasant holiday and we would definately go back!

Room Tip: Rooms over reception area quieter than poolside.

Decent hotel for what we payed... Bad points-Breakfast could do with a little more variation and hotel has
Quite an echo which makes even the smallest of noise seem loud... Good points- the staff are incredibly helpful and rooms are clean and beer 2 euros a pint ! decent location to 4/5 lovely beaches and do visit the local Indian restaurant..absolutely delicious on both occasions we visited.

Delighted to have stumbled upon this place. The staff here could notdo enough for us. From Helio the handsome barman to Marta, Merces, Bella on Reception and Charles the chef who "cooks with love" as he points to his heart. Room was spotless, balcony light was not working but was fixed almost as soon as we reported it. Situation was stone's throw from a gorgeous bay (with lifeguard) and around the corner from the Curry House (excellent indian food) and a cafe at the end where Celia sings like a nightingale. Buses, boat trips, nightlife in the old town, you name it it was available - but you can choose to hideaway and enjoy the tranquility and have a real holiday. Would go back without hesitation.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are very quiet

The hotel is small yes, but is lovely and friendly. The rooms are outdated but add to an authentic feel of Portugal. There is just enough amenities there for a quite relaxing break and the staff at the hotel are wonderful.
. Find Scoobies bar - pool, food, tv, lovely family who run it
. Cheap food in the hotel
. Walk - you will find beaches and little shops/bars scattered about even an indian!
. Ideal for a short stay, may get a bit bored for over a week

Torre Velha hotel is in a lovely quiet location with 2 beautiful small beaches (both with restaurants) within short walking distance. Albufeira is approx a 15 minute bus ride away and buses leave from the end of the road, about 5 minutes walk. We also walked into Albufeira along the cliff top walk, not that easy to follow the path but we had great fun finding it and enjoyed the beautiful coastline..
The hotel is small and family run so is very friendly and informal with a lovely well maintained pool area. Our room was cleaned 6 days out of the week and sheets and towels were changed frequently. The bedrooms are small and simple but adequate for our needs, we had plenty of drawer and wardrobe space and also a small fridge and TV, and a balcony with a seaview.
We chose half board, breakfast was simple continental with cereals, fresh rolls with ham, cheese and jam and tea/coffee and our evening meal was a choice from the restaurant menu of any starter, pasta, fish or meat plus a choice of yummy puds(3 courses) and coffee. I have to say the swordfish has to be the best we have ever had in all our years of travelling and would also recommend the pasta with piri piri cream sauce with prawns(giant prawns).
The bar is very well stocked and is run by Kevin and Marta who work very hard as they also wait on the tables in the restaurant. They are both lovely, always cheerful and very friendly and helpful, as is also the receptionist.
We will definitely return to the Torre Velha, thanks for a great holiday.
