As teachers, we wanted to find somewhere quiet, away from children if possible and 18-30 etc (and on a budget). We certainly found it here. We don’t like big hotels so this being 36 rooms was perfect.

Room was perfect for our stay. We had a twin room which had balcony overlooking the road (very quiet). It was cleaned everyday and beds were made. Linen was changed once during our stay and towels twice. Some reviews have criticised the cleanliness but we could not fault it throughout the hotel and the pool area (we saw these being cleaned daily). The bathroom could have had a lick of paint but this is not a 5* hotel. Beds were comfortable. We were disappointed that we didn’t have a kettle and tea making facilities in the room although on returning and reading latest reviews, it appears we could have asked at reception which we didn’t think of.

The only criticism of the hotel is (as others have mentioned) the breakfast. It was the same every morning. Fresh rolls (which were lovely) processed cheese and ham. It was the same cheese and ham each morning so some had gone dry. No problem as you just take from the fresh layer!! Some dry (high sugar) cereals were available with muesli and very warm milk. Orange juice was from concentrate, not fresh and coffee from machine was disgusting. Considering we had paid extra for breakfast, we were very disappointed with this. Our advice would be to pay room only as there are two mini markets within 5/10 minute walking distance which sell fresh pastries every day. There is also a fridge in your room so you could buy fresh orange juice. Would probably work out cheaper and you could sit on your balcony each morning having breakfast.

Most of the staff were wonderful, one exception, the man at breakfast each morning. Same person - didn’t even turn up till half an hour late one morning. Guests queued up outside breakfast room waiting for him to arrive. Some guests very upset by this as they had tours booked and therefore missed breakfast. No apology when he wandered in. He never seemed to smile and on asking one thing one morning we got such a look and response, never requested anything again. This was a shame as the rest of the staff at the hotel were fantastic. Extremely friendly and couldn’t do more to make sure you were happy. In the evening, they remembered your favourite ice cream (a must try) and drink. One lady (can’t remember her name) went above and beyond what was expected.

The pool area was very quiet. We spent most of our time here. There is some shade by the tower so unsure why people have left poor reviews of this. There are plenty of sun beds. We were able to have the same ones all week. Pool is very cold – my wife didn’t like this, I did as you were able to cool down quickly.

We didn’t eat any meals at the hotel due to recommendations from reviews. We visited several restaurants and highly recommend O’Amigo snack bar which is at the top of the road. Good quality food and do a tourist menu – Bread/Olives, Soup, Main, Pudding, Glass of wine for 12E per person. We would also recommend Quinta Da Gale Italian restaurant. Went twice as the food was so lovely and staff fantastic. Owned by an English lady who gave us some excellent advice about the area. Meal was about 35E for two course plus drinks. Avoid The View Bar and Diner. Very cheap but very disgusting - big mistake on our part. We avoided restaurants like Dom Dini’s as advised on here. We ‘splashed’ out on two nights. For our wedding anniversary we went to the restaurant on Evaristo Beach. Absolutely amazing and beautiful setting watching the sun go down whilst eating your meal. It is a fish restaurant and you choose your exact fish when you go in. Cost us 79E for 3 course meal and drinks. Also went to PIC-NIC restaurant on Costello Beach. Again lovely food – 59E for 3 course meal and drinks.

Supermarkets are a bit of a walk but the two minimarkets close by are fine. One is at Hapimag (hotel just down the road towards the beach) and once is on the main road on the left. Prices fine and had everything we required.

Gale is very quiet which was perfect for us. One review was unhappy as there wasn’t much to do. We liked this and it was very relaxing. Mainly German tourists but they stay in Hapimag.

There are some beautiful coves only a short walk away. I would advise that you don’t go to the ones at the bottom of the roads as most people go there and they get busy. If you go to these then turn left or right (or walk through Hapimag) and walk along the cliff top you will find some lovely much quieter coves. Sea was beautiful.

Best advice we took from one review was to get a copy of freemaps for Gale off Google. These are also available at a few places in Gale. Very helpful in finding our way around. Make sure you also bring your own beach towels.

We paid £340 per person B&B including transfers. We didn’t have high expectations for this price so therefore the hotel did not disappoint us. We were very comfortable. The rooms had solid walls so there was no noise above, below or around. However if you are paying £450 upwards, I would look elsewhere.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions as I got some brilliant advice by emailing other reviewers before we left.

nice room with a huge ceiling fan which in 30 degree heat we found worked, the cleaning was practically non existent, but plenty of cleaners around ?? make sure the towels are changed, we asked for a kettle which we got, we were in room 108 with the smallest balcony in the hotel we ate at the hotel ok burgers 3 euro lg beer 2 euro etc nice pool sunbeds were usually empty with towels on, but we did the beaches which are fantastic and they weren't packed, no seaside atmosphere in the area just a smelly main road with a few restaurants nearby find Happimag two mins away it has a lovely shop with fresh bread etc. hotel staff helpful and friendly a plus.

Room Tip: for extra you can upgrade

This hotel is 10min by car outside of Albufeira in a quiet area close to some nice beaches. We stayed for 2 nights and had a good sleep. It is a basic hotel with a nice pool, good breakfast (because they had muesli, bread with cheese and ham and coffee and tea..) and the service is ok. It doesn't have an elevator so you'll have to carry your suitcases. We had a view over the pool of the nextdoor hotel so that was ok. The beaches in the area are great but we found Albufeira itself really touristic and for young people who want to party and drink, judging by the many bars in the area...not a quiet place ie.
Torre Velha is ok- meets your needs if they are basic, wouldn't stay here for a week though.

We booked through Teletext holidays and got a very good price. If booking through a budget holiday company like this we were told to upgrade to a twin room because normally you'd be given the hotels worst room otherwise. We were pleased we took this option as our room was huge with 3 beds, a good balcony on the corner of the hotel with sea views (just!) but the views of the countryside/ surrounding area was nice.
The pool area had just enough loungers, the pool was fine, the lack of shade and the strong smell of sewerage when it got really hot were the only bad points.
We ate at the hotel on our first evening and the food was very basic. We suggest eating out at any of the local restaurants, especially O' Amigos at the end of the road to the left. We also suggest getting the freemaps guide to the area of Gale, this can be found on google. Despite looking to be a long distance on the maps, all the restaurants are close by - a 5 to 10 min walk. The only restaurant we would say to avoid is Dom Dinis, rude staff, bad service and very expensive..see our review on their page for more!
We visited 6 beaches in the area, our favourite was Sao Rafael, a half an hour walk. There are two beaches within a 5-10 min walk of the hotel, which are very nice also. All of the beaches in the area have a restaurant/cafe on them selling coffee, snacks and full meals.
Basically, a very cheap holiday and we expected it to be basic. But overall good value for money.

Room Tip: Upgrade to twin as double can be small
