“The most relaxing hotel I have ever stayed in”
Reviewed 13 July 2009

Where to start about this fantastic hotel? Booking in was a pleasure in itself, you are made to feel special on arrival with a knowledgable receptionsist, green tea and face towels to freshen up. Our room..spacious, modern, spotless, pool view (definitely worth paying the extra few pennies), huge bed, lovely bathroom, complimentary fruit and water a nice touch. The food... delicious, not one bad plate of food passed our lips (we are two fussy eaters when it comes to quality, we know what we like and boy did we like this food) Anyone who says otherwise must have eaten at a different hotel. Yes its not cheap, but who wants cheap and nasty when you are staying at such a fabulous place, the food is important and this restuarant ticked all our boxes. Can highly recommend the grilled prawns on black rice, the scallop kebabs the sea bass, the ostrich steak, (yum) the oriental steak. As for the deserts, make sure you save room because they are scrumptious. The breakfasts were well stocked with a variety of foods, from fruit, pastries, cereals, omelettes (you need to ask for these), plus all the cooked food you can eat. My hubbie likes his cooked breakfast and wasn't disappointed, The staff... from check in to the cleaning staff everyone is friendly and always has a smile and a hello for you. But as the previous review says, not in your face. They make you feel special, just how we wanted to feel on our first weekend away together for four years. The restaurant staff were amazing, so helpful and welcoming. The pool....relaxing (chilly when you first get in but after a few seconds its bliss) This isn't an area that has lots and lots to do in the surrounding vicinity, so if you want to party and stay out late then maybe look at another hotel. If you want to stay put and relax then this will fit the bill nicely. We didn't make it to the spa but have promised ourselves a trip when we return back to the hotel sometime soon. I have to say my motto is to not go back to places again and again, this world is so huge, got to try different places. However this hotel has broken the mould, and I can't wait to return for a trip of relaxation and pure selfish indulgence. Top place, book now or you may regret it!

The hotel is well aware of Tripadvisor, having chatted to several of the staff. They were very proud of recently receiving an award from Expedia.....

We arrived at the hotel a little earlier than expected (but the room was ready) and we were greeted warmly and given a cold drink and refreshing face cloth. We were staying for two weeks and had booked a room on the third floor, with a pool / sea view. We would recommend the "pool view" if possible. You can only see the sea (!) from the third floor. For some strange reason, the bath had been painted, but we were offered an alternative room, which we declined as the view was not as good, the staff however, were more than helpful. The bath did have an overhead shower, so no problems there.

We felt the food was very good with impeccable service from the staff. We got the impression that staff were very proud to work at the hotel which was reflected in their service. There was an offer of "buy three, get the fourth meal free" which we took up and thought was good value for money. The wine list was reasonable, with staff giving good advice to match wine with a chosen meal. You do need to book however, regardless of how many are in the restaurant and there appears to be meticulous planning. The dress code is "casual chic" - we didn't know what this was!!!! There is also a "welcome evening" which consisted of wine tasting (for free)! Breakfast consisted of an ample assortment of fresh and cooked dishes, which stayed open until 11 am.

For those of you who want to use the internet, there is no free service - 5 Euro for two hours (which was a special offer and the clock starts ticking when you have logged on for the first time) or 20 Euro for a day. The wireless signal reaches the pool area without a problem.

Staff were excellent - they printed off the 5 day weather forecast and a route planner. They even offered to drive to the post office to send our post cards!

The location is quiet and five minutes from the beach. If you like fish, you are in for treat!

We hired a car with our holiday package and would have felt a little isolated without it. The roads in Portugal are easy to navigate and not too fast.

The local supermarket which is just around the corner is excellent and we only wish they would open a branch in our local town!

There were children staying in the hotel towards the end of our stay. Those around the pool seemed more than a little surprised, although the children in question were very well behaved. We did check with our tour operator on returning to the UK and the hotel is not advertised as "adults only", but "ideal for couples" which it is.

A tip for the ladies and those men with more hair than my husband! Hair conditioner is not provided, I can't remember the last place that we stayed that did not supply it.

Tea and coffee making facilities are not available in the room, which again was a little surprising.

If you book a spa treatment you can use the Turkish Bath Spa for free that day, otherwise I think they said it was 7 Euro each per day. Use of the gym is free. We did not use the Spa, as we were too busy relaxing by the outdoor pool, but the staff did appear friendly when I had a look around.

We would stay at the hotel again, perhaps for a shorter break. Enjoy.....

Just came back from a weeks hol, it was great, lovely hotel, great pool area, very friendly staff who are very helpful. It was a very relaxing holiday as hotel is quite remote, only 2 mins from beach and limited amount of restaurants near by, but enough for us. Can go further if you have a car or by taxi, but we were happy to stay nearby. Can't praise hotel enough, it was one of the best we have stayed at, loved every minutes there. Did not use the spa as the weather was too nice to go inside for treatments, but it looked very nice. Lovely selection for breakfast, really nice spread. Evening meal was very nice but had the same menu all week. No entertainment, as hotel too small, but got talking to other guests which was enough. If you want a quite very relaxing holiday this is the place to stay. Absolutely brilliant!

We have just returned from a week's stay and can't compliment the hotel enough, it was so quiet and lovely, we had the pool to ourselves most of the time. We asked for a room on the top floor, pool view, from which you can see the sea, good tip, even though they don't advertise the fact which is unusual as I'm sure most hotels would. With regard to the food we booked half board as there seemed to be a lack of restaurants in walking distance, having read some the previous reviews I was slightly concerned but am delighted to recommend this option. Although you can't choose from the a la carte menu, you are given the menu of the day which consists of four courses, a starter, a fish course, a meat course and a dessert, and if there is anything you don't like they will offer an alternative. I am quite fussy with food but only swopped a couple of starters all week, the rest was lovely. We found the food to be more than sufficient and were disappointed to find that not more people dined in the restaurant, give it a go it is worth it. Also for a four star hotel the wine prices were very good, 8 Euros for a bottle of house wine which was very nice.

The hotel room was very spacious and everywhere was kept spotlessly clean. All the staff at the hotel were so friendly, nothing seemed too much for them, they were there when you needed them, but weren't in your face, which we don't like.

The location is perfect, the area is very quiet, the beach was lovely and we were so pleased that we hadn't stayed in one of the busier resorts. We had the intention of having a peaceful and relaxing week and that is exactly what we got.

We can't wait to go back again.

As usual we did the research before booking this hotel. In basic terms it did 'everything it says on the tin'. It's rare and somewhat suspicious to find a place with virtually no bad reviews but this was a real find.

Tip..ask for a pool view room - if not ask for a third floor room.

Tip.. if you're not hiring a car pay the extra for a PRIVATE transfer from the airport as the 'shuttle' service can take ages.

Gale is a quiet town a few miles west of the 'mad-house' which is Albufeira. A small selection of bars and restaurants with a wonderfully clean beach. There'a a great golf course (Salgadas) about a mile away.

The hotel feels like a five star - I think the absence of an indoor pool means it only has the 4 stars. Great service, lovely 'boutique style' rooms made for a very relaxing break - especially as children aren't allowed (!)

The restaurant is of an excellent standard (if a bit pricey - around €35/40 a head).
We stayed b&b - great breakfasts to suit all pallets. The hotel bar is also excellent - especialy the cocktails.

A short walk away we found the 'Aldeius de Gale' bar/restaurant. Family run, great home cooked food, daily specials/ cheap drinks and friendly service - starter, main course, desert, wine, beer, coffee...€25.00 for two! That'll do nicely.! We ate there most nights.

Also nearby was 'Bar Fusion' - a very friendly and cheap bar with all the usual facilities. There's a really good chinese above the bar - one of the best I've had anywhere in ages!

For daily supplies you'll find the Apolonia supermarket - I've never seen such a clean shop. It's like a posh version of Waitrose!
