“Worst place I have ever stayed ”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014 via mobile

This has been the holiday from hell! Where so I start? When we arrived to check in at 4pm we were told by reception that our room wouldn't be ready till half 5. The man who was on reception was very rude, in fact all the reception staff were awful. When we finally got to our apartment we were horrified by how warm it was (when I booked the room it said that it had air con) and the decor was very shabby and dated I decided to say nothing and see how it was that night but after not being able to sleep my bf and I asked to move to a different room we had to pay an extra €30 per night! We payed it and our new room was very modern looking but it had a sofa bed which was very uncomfortable. The pool area is a complete disaster, every morning from 8am I tried to get a sun lounger but they were all gone all day, the pool itself is tiny. I never leave bad reviews but I feel like I have to warn people about this place! To say I am disappointed would be an understatement! I am glad to be going home tomorrow and I will definitely return to Portugal but never ever to this hell hole! It has ruined our holiday

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking out your valuable time to write a comment regarding you stay with us.

It’s our aim to offer our guests an entirely satisfactory service at Clube Praia da Oura. We are sorry that you were not allocated a unit with air conditioning but these are obviously more expensive.

With regards to the sun loungers, this seems to be a worldwide problem. Despite warning signs displayed in the pool area, prohibiting the reserving of sun loungers, guests simply ignore them.

We are aware that our pool is not a very big pool but as the hotel is on the beach, most guests prefer the beach to the pool. Also, to relieve crowding the pool area, our guests are also allowed to use the pools in some of our sister hotels.

We apology for any inconvenience you experienced and hope that you will visit us soon and give us opportunity to serve you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

Had a great two weeks in Portugal at this hotel! Not usually a fan of self catering holidays but this one was an exception!
We stayed in a large studio with a sea view (447) which had everything we needed! It even had a bath that lots of the new rooms don't! We had no problems with cockroaches like some reports on here say.
The location is brilliant, beach on your doorstep, the Beach Cafe 2 minutes away, a row of restaurants opposite the hotel bowling green and local shops all very close! The strip is also only 5 minutes away and if you want a full English I suggest Eddy's by the Karaoke bar!
The beach is lovely, yet a little rocky. All the staff seemed friendly and maid service most days, although sometimes very early!
The only big downside was that there was no chance of getting a sun bed by the pool and it was always over crowded.
I went as part of a group of 18 and we had an amazing time and will defiantly be returning - don't let negative reports on here out you off! It's a great hotel and excellent value for money!

Dear Guest,

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for your review.

It’s pleasing that you remarked the perfect location of our hotel, beach on your doorstep.

With regards to the sun beds by the pool, we apologise on this issue but it seems to be a worldwide problem. Despite warning signs in the area, guests ignore them and continue to reserve sunbeds. If we remove the towels guests’ complain so we try to control this area as best as we can.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Club Praia da Oura.

Yes ... the location near the beach is excellent, however, check-in took forever, the pool is too small given the huge size of the hotel, our apartment was unbelievably noisy (directly across from a hotel full of young travellers who partied all night) and our beds had definitely seen their best days. We were charged for a safe that didn't work properly and somehow our charge at check-out was higher than our booking.com amount.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.

It’s pleasing that you remarked the perfect location of our hotel.

We are sorry that the check-in took so long but during peak season and considering the size of the hotel, this can happen if expected arrivals check-in at the same time.

With regards to the pool size, we wish to inform that there is a children’s pool further down in the garden to relieve the bigger pool next to Jac’s restaurant.

The bed issue has been addressed to housekeeping for action.

Charges are only made according to consumption.

We hope you will give us the opportunity of serving you again in the near future.

The resort is near the beach and restaurants and bars. We were initially given a room which was dated and dirty however, they changed our room to a much better one which was more like what I expected. the rooms are being refurbished and the finished ones look great. The room did not have air conditioning but this was not a problem nice it was quite cool.

Overall, On arrival, the apartment was spotlessly clean, a good size with storage space and excellent location for the beach and nearby shops, bars and restaurants. It is standard holiday accommodation. The sheer size of the complex is off-putting for me and prefer smaller more private and intimate surroundings. A lot of the ground floor apartments on the perimeter are exposed to so much pedestrian traffic and are offered no privacy as the bed is directly inside the front patio doors as people pass right by. It is very well maintained throughout but very dated with 70's style tiles, I didn't see any updates or refurbishment going on as stated in other reviews. We were lucky with the location of our ground floor sea view studio apartment it was number 201 with a small seating area at the entrance with sunbeds and garden table and chairs with parasol. Our sheets were changed once during our 9 night stay. 'Cleaning' every second day, bins emptied and left without towels at times when they were dropped off much later in the evening. The bed was advertised as a sofa bed but consisted of two single metal frame camp like beds. The kitchen is fully equipped with standard size fridge and freezer box, 2 ring hob and microwave and all cutlery, plates utensils that you need, large counter space with stools to eat. The television is a modern with lots of English channels. The shower is run off the mains and there was always plenty of hot water with good pressure, there is also a hair dryer. There is adequate clothes storage space including iron and ironing board as well as a safe you pay for at reception. There is NO air conditioning, not completely necessary but would've been nice as it is so warm during the night.
The beach is down some steps directly beside us at the rear of the complex. The downside to this is noise pollution as it is a public road and one night there was a large gathering making a racket, on ringing reception we were told it was an issue for the police, they would see what they could do. I wouldn't have liked to have small children there in bed as they would have been woken up.
The pool is lovely but just too small for the size of the complex and part of the pool side entertainment daily was war going on over sunbeds. The pool opens at 9am and you are not permitted to enter before this to reserve your sun bed, there are signs stating you are not to do this in any case. There were days when beds seemed to be reserved all day with no one returning or returning late to use them and thus the drama unfolded. There is grass area surrounding the pool people had to use instead. There was onsite entertainment at the pool area then with music blaring like a rave, games such as water polo or girls dancing. There are large bouncy castles for kids on until late in the evening. The pool side cafe only begin serving food at 12. The chicken burger is one of the nicest I've ever eaten, the drinks are on the pricey side compared to anywhere else in the area €4 for coke or beer. Thelma was the lady who checked us in who was lovely and seems to understand hospitality, she could teach the rest of them a thing or two, they were more abrupt. I asked about buses on two separate occasions to attractions and got a quote banged into a calculator printing a receipt to purchase the tickets from them. I was none the wiser about the location of the bus stop and the prices quoted were more expensive than ticket shops outside. On checking in a wrist band was put on us as it was high season for the hotel to identify their guest, it seemed a bit silly and where the end was cut off it left sharp edges, I was going to leave it on for an easy life but a few self inflicted scratches later it was ditched but no one said anything to us and very few people overall were wearing them.
There is an elevator in the complex at the right hand corner of the pool that brings you up to the 9th floor and turn left towards 'The Strip' avoiding cardiac hill exiting the complex.
Would I recommend this for family or friends? It really depends on what you are looking for, value for money if you go high season you are paying for that , it is not a reflection of the quality of accommodation. Going by my apartment, it's a great base and somewhere to put your head if you are young, my parents would've needed a proper bed. You can cook here and head off to all the local attractions. If you want to stay by the pool all day in peace and quiet maybe not so much to trek around the place up to the swimming pool and not get a sun bed or some of them right beside the water getting splashed and really loud music playing.

Room Tip: Ground floor sea view, beside the beach and more privacy.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your recent TripAdvisor review with specific examples of where we failed to meet your expectations on your recent visit.

We apologise for any inconvenience with regards to the sun beds but we are doing our best to overcome this issue, which is being rather difficult as guests ignore the warning signs displayed in the pool area. The wristbands also help identify residents from non residents; sadly many guests do not cooperate and complain when non residents are in the area.

As you noted, your room had no air conditioning, this is our main commodity and we are gradually installing these in all units. The bus tours issue has been addressed to the respective department for action.

With regards to the noise in the street, this is the responsibility of the authorities and we call them to intervene concerning any inappropriate behaviour.

We once again apologise for any inconvenience you may have experienced and look forward to welcoming you again to our hotel.

Kind regards,

After our initial disappointment as we had booked a 1 bedroom apartment, we were in a Studio, the view from our room was worth the week cramped in the Studio. Lots of renovations going on around us but that didn't effect us like we thought it might. This is why we were given the Studio and not the 1 bedroom. The new apartments seem to be 1 and 2 bedrooms and wow, they looked amazing.
The wardrobe in the Studio is a waste of time as there's not a lot you can put in there are there is other things already in there. The bathroom is a good size as well as the shower. The floor of the shower felt soft so every now and then you felt like the floor would give way.
The kitchen/sitting area is small but comfortable...would definitely not be good for 4 of you.
The balcony area is worth the view along with the 2 lounges and table and chairs....an excellent area with plenty of room.
The pool area is huge and beautiful looking...and the gardens are all beautifully kept and maintained with a huge amount of seating set around the gardens.
The beach and beach/bars are right at your door step....a sensational location and close to all the shops and bars up on the main street.
Loved this resort and would love to experience the new apartments next time we stay there

Room Tip: a must is an apartment/studio facing the beach bar area....worth the view to have a rundown studio r...

I read some not so good reveiws on here before I went. All I have got to say is I dont know why. Ive just come back from a week there and i would recommend and will be going back. What a beautiful place. I had a studio room it was ready when I got there. And I was stunned to see a beautiful Sea veiw. It was exactly as described it had everything I needed It was very accommodating. Yes it didnt have Air con and sometimes it was to hot. There was however 4 fans in the room. The Breakfast was perfect. The staff very friendly. There are shops close by. The beaches amazing. Thank you Clube praia da oura I will definitely be back next year. For those who have gave a bad reveiw if you want the Ritz pay for the Ritz perhaps nothing is good enough for some.
