“Nice beach, nice hotel, bad location”
Reviewed 26 September 2010

This is a massive hotel (1300 rooms), so if you like a more intimate experience, you won't find it here. Our room was over the quiter side and had sea views, but they do extend far into the town area. The beach is lovely, but very tidal so be careful if you're not that confident at swimming.

The food in the area is not good. The "Strip" is great if you want food you could get at home sat along side a road! Its all the same - meat and fish, burgers, etc. However, a 25 minute walk or 15 minute car/train ride (from down the stip) will take you to the "Old town". This is a much nicer area where you an get some traditional food and sit by the sea. It is worth the trip.

The rooms are dated but very comfortable and clean.

Pro's: Close to beach, small but clean rooms, good kitchen facilities.

Con's: No air conditioning, if you want to get a portable it is ten euros a day, there is a waiting list and they will not inform you when one is free, had to leave the side windows open at night due to the unbearable heat and small bugs were getting into the room as we slept. They wanted an extra 114 euro for an air conditioned room in a different Petchey hotel further from the beach. Wanted an extra 200 euro for a sea view room on top of the 600 euro we paid for this small room. Half way through our week they started to charge us to contact a taxi firm, who also put on an additional charge to collect us.

The staff at the hotel though are probably the worst i have encountered anywhere in the world. I actually think they went out of their way to make evertything as difficult as possible, there was only one middle aged grey haired guy who was helpful, the rest should be returned to the Zoo!!

Stayed in a studio apartment on the ground floor opposite the restaurant. On arrival at 10.30pm there was no lights working in the apartment but instead we were greeted with overwhelming stagnant hot humid air. The room was equipped with a fan & we thought by leaving the door open this would suffice , sadly this was not to be the case. Conditions did not improve throughout the entire week leading to sleepless nights & very uncomfortable holiday conditions. Found the staff to be less than hospitable, this was not the memory I had of the Portuguese having holidayed in the Algarve previously.
However the facilities were kept clean & the location is good. Following this holiday I will certainly not be going back to this accommodation facility.

I travelled with my husband and two smallies (aged 3 and 2 years) and we were staying in a one-bed apartment. CPO (as it's called) is a huge complex - there must be several hundred apartments and unlike lots of places, it's not fenced off or enclosed. The apartments go right down to the beach - but sadly we didn't get one of those. We were on the ground floor right opposite the main pool and we were pretty happy with that location.

The apartment was reasonably spacious and very well supplied with kitchen bits and pieces - even tea towels and washing up liquid. There was a microwave, kettle and toaster and plenty of cutlery, plates, etc.

The balcony space for the one-bed's is very good - lots of room for kids to play safely, with a table, four chairs and two sunbeds. Happily our balcony got the sun from about 1.00pm every day - just in time for the kids nap.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the maid service was really excellent. We only ate in the restaurant twice at lunchtime, and it was very good.

The downsides for us included the fact that there was no airconditioning. The first two nights were almost unbearable and neither the kids nor the parents got much sleep. After that the weather cooled down a little and we had probably acclimatised. You could hire an airconditioning unit for €50 per week, but they only had 5 available and they were all gone.

Another downside was the kids pool. Way too deep for small kids - once they moved about two fee beyond the access steps it was too deep for our youngest. Our older daughter could go about half way out before it was up to her chin. There are also no sunbeds around the kids pool so you must use a couple of benches there or lie on the grass.

The last downside is that the only entertainment for kids under 5 years is a nightly kiddies disco for one hour. Given that this is September and the majority of over 5's are back in school I thought a bit more effort might have gone into putting something on for the little ones, but sadly not.

I would however recommend CPO to families with older kids and to couples. The location is great - only 5 mins walk to the start of the strip, the beach is anything from 1 min to 3 mins walk away (depending on where your apartment is), and the complex is very well kept.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Just come back from CPO. Had a truly fabulous stay. The hotel is immaculately clean and the room was cleaned every other day. Had an apartment with a sea view, which was lovely. It is a very large complex, but it is run well. There was always hot water, there was no air conditioning but this was not a problem for us at this time of year, eventhough the weather was really hot. The food in Jac's on site is wonderful and very reasonable. You should visit El Rancho at the start of the strip - food was excellent here too. We caught the dinky train to the old town for a couple of meals in the evening - 7 Euros return for the both of us and well worth it. Try the Mexican Mi Sombro - gorgeous food and a sea view. Lovely beaches, with proper British sand! As a bonus there is free Wi-fi internet access in the reception - which was really handy. Good fun entertainment in Amanda's bar every night. Lots of happy hours at the bars on site. All round brilliant time - with ITV, BBC and Channel 4 for those of us who like our home comforts whilst away.

Stayed for a week in a self catering studio at CPO in Praia da Oura. Self catering facilities were great, everything you could need! Location of the apartments was great, 5 min walk to 'The Strip' with lots of restuarants and bars but far away enough to not hear the noise! Our room was cleaned every other day which was fine, the only downside to the rooms is that there is no air conditioning, you do get a fan but with temperatures of 35 degrees you really could do with some air con! The apartment complex is huge, some apartments do face onto the beach but the complex goes quite far back, we were placed in a seperate block (Block K) towards the back of the hotel (no pool or beach view). However, this was fine for us as we had a few shops over the road and didn't have to walk up the hill to go to dinner every night. A word of warning - lots of hills. The pool was nice, had a little shop but the woman just made up her own prices! Bar/restaurant on the side of the pool which was nice but expensive. Haven't really got anything bad to say about the hotel except check in took quite a long time, the queue was just slow moving and then you had to wait for a porter to take you to your room.

The area of Praia da Oura was great, highly recommend The Sizzling Stone restaurant, bit pricey but lovely. Its on the way to the strip. We really liked Portugal the only negative was that in the restaurants they were quite reluctant to give you change from your bill ie, they wanted it as a tip. We went to Slide and Splash water park for the day. It was one of the cheaper ones but had plenty of slides and things to do but the place is daylight robbery. It's the first waterpark i have been to that you have to pay for sun louners (4 euros each). There was plenty of grass to sit on though. The sun loungers dont come with an umbrella, that's another 5 euros and lockers are 4 euros but do take alot of extra cash as they require a 10 euro deposit for each of these....! We booked the waterpark through Thomas Cook and it was about 28 euros with return transfers. We also booked a day trip to Lisbon through the hotel, this was 19 euro each whilst Thomas Cook wanted 45 euros each. This was really great, the journey is around 3hrs each way including a 30min stop. They give you a guided tour where you can get off the bus for an hour/30mins at each place and then they drop you in the centre of Lisbon to do some shopping for 3hrs. It was a great day.

Overall, highly recommend the hotel and The Algarve. Staff were very friendly and everything was clean.

Just arrived back from Clube Praia da Oura - travelled with husband and two girls aged 12. The hotel is clean and in the best location in Oura. We were on the ground floor overlooking the pool - which was cleaned daily. You can either lie on the sun loungers or around the hotel on the grass - which was actually cooler and more comfortable. Everything about these apartments is good except for no air con. I would not hesitate in booking this hotel again if they spent the money and installed air con. Besides that one downside - everything else is excellent. Went on three excursions - slide and splash, catamarran and jeep safari. Happy hour 12 till 3. Do like the locals and visit the beach as the sun is going down - around 7pm. Very relaxing and still very warm.
