Hotel Mansao Bertolina
Ranked #144 of 154 Hotels in Albufeira
Reviewed 19 June 2014

Just returned from cheerfulway bertolina mansion, which I booked a while ago after reading brilliant reviews. I was very worried when a few weeks ago I realised it had been taken over by hotel California next door and all the recent reviews were terrible.
We arrived and like others there was no way to get into the hotel, the minibus driver managed to speak to a maid over the buzzer who came out and tried to help but didn't speak very good English. She explained we needed to check in next door. But the door down the road which is the back door of hotel California is locked. Luckily the maid rang the hotel and they sent someone to collect us. It gets weird you go in the back door and get in a tiny lift and go down to floor 6 then walk along another corridor and get in another tiny lift and go to the ground floor reception.
The staff at reception were fine some reviews said they were rude but they were helpful we paid for a safe and someone took us back to our rooms.
We asked for a pool view higher up with private balcony -we got ground floor pool view with shared terrace. Another couple said they overlooked a rundown wall so we had a nice view.
It is room only with a small fridge nothing else. I asked if we could have a kettle and within half an hour they had delivered a tray with mini kettle and cups and even some flavoured tea. Also we thought we had a problem with the lights and within half an hour someone had come to help. Staff were fine.
Room wise it was 104 clean but tiny. Double bed tiny console table with mirror and TV above it. Bath room fair size and clean enough. No where to put our cases so had to keep them beside bed on each side. I tried to keep room tidy but it felt cluttered due to the lack of space it was smallest room I've ever stayed in. Tiny.
Terrace lovely nice to sit on morning and evening with glass wine.
Pool great very quiet plenty beds nice pool and you can take your own drinks. No snack bar.
Another pool in the hotel California has a snack bar you could use - we went for look and was lots of people sitting round drinking making friends quite noisy. Nice enough but we much preferred the bertolina mansion pool . Although you could hear panpipes coming from the square all day - after few days we even used earplugs!!!
Bad points -this is the noisiest hotel ever - we like a drink ourselves but unless you plan to be so drunk you pass out every night - you won't get any sleep!!! The square pounds until 4/5am and you can hear everything even with earplugs in!
But this wasn't a hotel for young groups there was mainly couples aged 30/40/50s.
Cleaned every day except Sunday and beds/towels changed most days.
Pool and view were lovely during day peaceful and staff were helpful although didn't see much of them.
When we checked out they were not going to refund the €15 unless we had slip receipt even though we had the safe key to hand in so remember to keep that!
Some good points -pool very central 2 mins to square and beach.
But room too small and way too noisy.
Thanks

There is no advise on Booking.com when you are booking Mansion Bertolina that you need to check in at the Hotel California on the other side of the building which can be accessed by a 5 minute walk to the left down many steps & through the square or to right down a pedestrian hill, either will lead you to Bar street where hotel California is situated in the middle of.
We found hotel California ourselves by checking trip advisor(thank you previous reviews), where we needed to check in for the Bertolina at 12.45am...we did not get to our room until 1.45am!! The "receptionist" was a young man who had only started working there a few days prior. Firstly he could not find our keys, but when he eventually did we set of on our journey to find our room with our 20kg luggage in tow. He brought us up in the lift to the 5th floor down a long corridor & out along 2 sets of steps & in to another building, showed us our door & left. We tried the 3 keys on the fob which didnt work & on further inspection of where we were I realised this building looked nothing like the Bertolina in the pictures. So back we went, up all the steps, on to the lift & back down to reception. I tried to explain the keys would not work & that the Bertolina was only a 3 story old style house not a multi story apt/hotel. So back he came with us in to the lift, 5th floor, corridor, steps & back to room again. He tried the keys, ran up & down the other stairs inside the building & still could not figure it out. So, back to reception we go, my bf still dragging the 20kg bag & the receptionist speaks to the bar man (the only other "staff" member I could see in the place). Straight away the bar man said he knows where to go(even though he could hear me on our 2nd attempt trying to find our room & saying "Bertolina" he did not come over to help) So off we went again to 5th floor, this time turning at another corridor & in to another lift up to 8th floor & out a fire door on to street level. Bertolina was approx 2 doors down on the right. Finally we found the correct place. The young guy left us at the door & we went to our room where we expected to find our " room with balcony" except we were in a room right beside the front door that looked out on to the street at the front, no balcony, we could not open windows at any point as we were at street level.
At this time it was now nearly 2am & we were exhausted & not willing to go back the 8 floors to reception! We did not sleep well that night or any night for that matter. The noise from the front door lock opening & closing was so loud, as were all the other room doors & locks. They slammed every time they closed. The mansion itself probably was a nice place when it was personally run but now that it has been taken over by the Cheerfulway group there is nothing personal about this place. There’s no reception, the rooms consist of literally beds(rock hard) bathroom,a fridge, & wardrobes, & a tv that didnt work either. We did get clean towels from the maid & she did make our beds. The following morning on inspection of our check in receipt from reception we could see that we were originally meant to have Room 304 but were given 201.From the pool you could see room 304(with balcony) was occuppied, as were all the other 5 balcony rooms so we felt there was not much point in trying to change rooms ( and we did not want to see reception/Hotel California or its lifts again until the end of the week) I also felt the noise from the square would be much worse in a balcony room as we could still here it from ours with all the doors inside the mansion closed. Luckily we had family arriving close by towards the end of the week so we decided to check out early Friday morning as we thought there would be a better chance of speaking to a manager early in the day. I didnt get his name but we explained all the mishaps of the night of check in, the wrong room, noise level etc. When he proceeded to do up our bill I requested a discount & he said "I see what you are doing here" but he graciously offered us €100 off our final bill which we accepted with thanks. I also suggested that when people are booking, the hotel details on Booking.com should show that Check in needs to be done in Hotel California & he thanked us for our advice. Check out took 10 mins. Bonus after not a great experience in Bertolina but we still managed to enjoy our time in Albufeira.

Room Tip: I would not recommend staying here but i think the balcony rooms would have more noise from the squa...

I have been to Albufeira many times but this time was the worst I experienced hotel wise. First of all, if I read at the older reviews , I dont know where all these people mentioned (Fatima, Anna etc. ) are coming from! We didnt see a single soul from the hotel during our stay. The mansion is very creepy and not very clean. This hotel is managed by Hotel California and it is a real nightmare! We ordered a shuttle before leaving on our last day and we apparently needed to pay with cash. No problem until there was no more cash available on a sunday throughout the whole city. We explained our problem to the front desk of hotel California but they didnt seem to care. They were very rude acting as if we didnt have any money to pay, making fun of us because we were forced to use our credit cards!! In the end they refused us to pay with the card and we had to go with a taxi to the Airport and look for an available bancomat in Estoril in order to pay the taxi fare. It was 6 am and quite stressful. In addition, the front desk didnt open the door of the mansion to one of my friend the night before our departure on purpose just to mess with us and were laughing on the microphone. Totally unacceptable! The mansion is probably better than hotel California however, it was still very creepy, we could hear all kinds of weird noises coming out of the bathroom... It was also very loud but you need to accept this when you come to Albufeira. Then, is was not very neat and nobody cleans your room nor change your towel on Sundays... The management can go home cause they really suck. I will never go there again or in any hotel managed by cheerfulway. Stay away from
those hotels, they are just unprofessionals.

hello all,

please note that I never usually complaint about a place unless it is vital. this time it is!!!! I would like to mention first that the place is well situated in the old part of Albufeira. But this is about the only advantage of this hotel.
First, the check in is done at the California Hotel where some of the personel are nice but Also you can have One Older Man, who took UNCARE of us in a way that I have never been treated before......!!! A person like that should not Work in a place where you need to HELP people, yes I mean HELP people...!!! I you want to be treated like if you are A Stupid Woman, Helpless and Poor, please check with that White Headed Stupid Man at the Desk.
I travel alot and usually when you have a problem, the person at the desk in a hotel tries to do their best, not always possible but at least they try their best. A phrase like "THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM BUT YOURS!!!! " is not acceptable in a Helpdesk working with people. Hope the hotel will inform him about this...!!!
Please note also that on Sunday, your room will not be done and Towels not changed....
Please note there is NOBODY at the desk in your hotel if you have a problem, but you need to go to the CALIFORNIA Hotel to be "HELPED" if that word means Anything..!!!!
hope this helps others,
cheers

I repeat what the previous two guests have said. The pool area is lovely, and the place is not bad if there was anyone there or desk or bar. They tried to put us in the Hotel California, which is far from California having seen the room, service is terrible to get sorted, wasted 4 hours of our Anniversary holiday, which matters when we only had four days. Eventually let us stay where I had booked ! i.e. The Bertolina when they realised I was having none of it.Stay away until they sort new owners out, at the moment it is like Fawlty Towers, without the laughs!!

My partner & I arrived here at approx 12.45am last week. First of all our coach transfer from Faro airport left us off at square by beach as bus couldn't get up the narrow streets. He pointed us in general direction & after 15 mins searching & asking people we got a taxi as nobody had heard of hotel. The driver took us on a 10 min journey via the oneway system to drop us off at literally at small side street at other side of square and charged €7 for the pleasure! The hotel was locked up & frankly unimpressive from the exterior. We tried ringing the doorbell for a while without success & then called the tel no on outside of door. Eventually we had to call Booking.com where we booked for help. After 2 lengthy telephone calls with unhelpful staff we were finally given tel number for Hotel California to book another room for the night. When we called them the receptionist said: "ah yes, all checkins for Bertolina must be done here"! This was never mentioned at time of booking. A member of staff came to get us (the back of California is next door to fron of Bertolina) via their hotel fire exit & took us to reception. We finally got into our room at 4am! If booking in future make sure to get dropped off at Hotel California.

The hotel:

The hotel itself is a beautiful building inside. 12 rooms, 4 on each of the 3 floors. However since it has been taken over by the Cheerfulway group recently, it now has no staff - only a lady who comes in most days to change towels & make the bed. A lot of effects seem to have been removed from the hotel to its detriment, as it would have been a lot homelier if left the same. We requested a pool view room & we were able to walk directly out to the pool from our patio doors which was great. Lovely private pool area & the other guests were really nice. There is a lovely view over the square from the pool area but the downside is the noise was very bad until 4am every morning from the clubs/bars below. We booked room onlybut some other guests were b&b and half board. They were unhappy as you had to go to California for it and it wasn't that good. Half board meant a voucher for selected restaurants in the town but you had to choose from a restricted basic menu.
There is a mini fridge in the room but no glasses, cutlery etc.. We these from California after some persuading. This should be in all rooms as there is no bar or food facilities in the hotel.

On the whole, we enjoyed our stay in this beautiful little place but. management really need to come up to scratch before they strip it of all its charm. Work in organisation of things is urgently required and there should be at least one member of staff on site here for checkin at least. I am sorry this is longwinded but I wanted to be honest.

We arrived at 01.30am luckily I had read the previous review on trip advisor about having to check in at the California hotel which is next door, however you have to walk around the hotel (10 min walk) down steps and through bar street which was hectic noisy and packed at the time we arrived.

The room we had was 101, very clean and overlooking the pool, however the drains did smell in the bathroom and we had a lot of flies each day,we had to buy fly spray. The room nicknamed the "divorce" room has 2 single beds which cannot be pushed together due to the huge fireplace in the room. The noise from bar street carried on each night until 4am.

Breakfast is taken at the California hotel which was cold each day beans, sausage bacon all cold.

We were expecting to meet Fatima who no longer runs the hotel which I feel is a shame as we have heard fantastic reviews about her including the famous fluffy scrambled eggs.

The old town is beautiful and beach sandy which is a 1 minute walk. Lots of restaurants and bars and the Portugese are lovely people.

We asked for a late check out and was told all the rooms were full which we know was a lie.We offered to pay to keep the room and was told have a shower at the pool which is what we did. Anna a lovely lady next door kept our bags for us on the last day.

All in all yes we would return to Portugal the old town but would be hesitant to return to this hotel unless the service was improved ie had a reception and a breakfast room.

Room Tip: book a room with a balcony
