Stayed in Grande Real for 7 nights in Sep 2010. Stayed in the self catering and hotel rooms - both excellent. Beautiful hotel with breathtaking sea view! Excellent service and food. Great location for the Strip and a 5 min drive to Old Town. (taxis are cheap). Cant wait to go back there! its a 5star Spa Resort hotel and prices are higher than other hotels around but when you see experience it you'll see why!!!!

Dear guest,

Thank you for your kind and enthusiastic review of the Grande Real Santa Eulália. We are very glad that you have an enjoyable stay with us and would like to thank you on behalf of the whole team for your motivating comments. We would just like to add a small note regarding the prices, which might be higher than the prices of most 4 stars hotels in the area, but if compared to other 5 star Hotels and Resorts in the Algarve, our prices are in fact very competitive. Just contact us through amendes@hoteisreal.com before your next visit to find out more about special deals that we offer.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Grande Real Santa Eulália.

Kind regards

Reviewed 13 October 2010

We've just returned from a 10 night stay in early October. This is a good hotel with good staff, good food, a lovely location and easy parking. We spent 1 night in a suite, 4 nights in a resort view room and 5 nights in a sea front room, all on the third (top) floor.

I have travelled extensively and spent hundreds of nights in hotels ranging from travelodges to 5 star deluxe and the beds in this hotel are the hardest I have ever encountered, anywhere in the world. They are rock hard and are unacceptable in any hotel, particularly a 5 star.. The directors obviously decided to save a bob or two in the past and have fitted the place with the cheapest beds they could find. After the second uncomfortable night, I developed lower back pain which I never normally suffer from. I asked at reception if they had any rooms with soft beds and they immediately promised a "mattress solution". A hour later, a lady appeared from housekeeping with armfuls of mattress toppers and proceed to remake the beds with not one, but THREE mattress toppers on each bed. I have to admit that this solution was successful. The toppers made the beds reasonably comfortable. I slept well from then on and the next day my back pain disappeared. The manager and his staff have solved the problem but it shouldn't really be necessary in the first place.

I like hotels with carpets because they deaden the noise of people walking about and dropping things. However, the bedroom carpets in this hotel should have been replaced years ago. They were cheap in the first place and are now well past their refurbishment date. Strangely, the corridor carpets are fine.

The only other issue was with corporate/private events. During our ten days there were two large conferences, two weddings and a corporate dinner. The main dining room was denied to us for 4 of the 10 evenings and only the seafront restaurant was open.. This wasn't a major problem for us as we'd hired a car and so could just drive off and eat elsewhere. Also, you need to avoid breakfast between 8 and 9 am unless you like being surrounded by large numbers of people in suits talking business. I accept that these large hotels need to generate additional revenue during the off-peak times and so corporate events are a necessity. Just be aware that holiday guests are not the main priority at these times although, in my experience, this is not particularly unusual.

The food in the lovely main dining room is very good, when you can get access to it. It's a tad pricey but not unreasonable for a 5 star. Breakfasts are extensive although the cheese and ham slices are not covered, so when I saw the odd fly taking advantage of this, I decided to stick to the hot food. The room service and food is very good.

There is a good, clean, air-conditioned gym with about 20 machines which should be enough for most people. Most of the time it was empty. The spa is very expensive and we didn't use it.

There were some minor maintenance issues. A towel rail came away from the wall and, though reported, had not been fixed 5 days later. The lid on the pedal bin just fell off when you operated the foot pedal.

I would recommend asking for the mattress topper solution as soon as you arrive and getting a sea view room on the top floor as the views are compromised the lower you go. The resort view rooms face north and overlook the car park. This is not as bad as it sounds because, as car parks go, this is quite a nice one and the resort view is actually fairly pleasant. Also, as the rooms face north, they are cooler and the balcony is in shade at lunchtime which is quite nice if you decide to have a lunch from room service. The resort rooms are smaller than the sea view rooms and, although not a major issue, we felt a bit short of space at times.

I think a car is essential as the hotel is a tad isolated. There are hardly any shops or restaurants in the immediate vicinity. We pre-hired an air-conditioned Ford Fiesta from the airport for 10 days for about 200 Euros, including collision damage waiver. The hotel rates appeared much higher.

Overall, this is nice hotel and we enjoyed our holiday. However, the Group directors are, in my view, too cost conscious for this to be a true 5 star experience. This is a shame because this hotel could be a real little gem if they spent some money on it.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your detailed review of your stay at the Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel SPA.

We regret that you were not completely satisfied with your stay at our Resort, especially due to the comfort of our beds, but are pleased to learn that our reception has been able to solve this problem. However, we would like to note that the fact that the mattresses are firm has nothing to do with cost consciousness, as you suggest. Of course, and as most Hotels and businesses nowadays, we feel the effects of the financial crisis, but we try our utmost to don’t let this affect the stays of our guests. The mattresses we have were definitely not the cheapest mattresses available, neither were the carpets, and if the reason for acquiring these mattresses would have been to save money, we would not provide mattress toppers as an alternative. The reason is very simple, just like with everything else, different guests have different expectations and this also applies for the firmness of the mattress. If you, for instance, see reviews from our Southern European guests, e.g. Portuguese and Spanish, you will find that they hardly ever comment the comfort of the beds, as they prefer a firm mattress. British or Northern European guests, however, prefer a softer mattress. To be able to cater for everyone, we opted for the solution of having a firmer mattress, which can be “softened up”, as we did for you, whenever a guest requests it or mentions that he is not satisfied with the comfort. As you might have seen in previous answers to reviews, we always encourage our guests to contact us prior or during their stay if they prefer a soft mattress or if anything else does not correspond to their expectations. And, we can only repeat ourselves: please do always inform us, preferably during your stay, if you are not satisfied with any aspect of your stay. We receive thousands of guests each year and all have different expectations, making it difficult to please everyone, but, if you inform us, we are at least able to try to find a suitable solution and, hopefully, improve your experience at our Resort.
It is true that some of our guest room carpets have stains, but not because they are not cleaned or were cheap, as you suggested, but because guests often spill all kind of liquids on it, which sometimes cannot be removed, especially if we do not have the chance to intervene immediately. This is the reason why the carpets in the corridor are in a much better state as the carpets in some of the guest rooms. We are constantly controlling the public areas and can react almost immediately if the carpet is dirty or something is spilled, which of course does not happen as frequently in the corridors as in the rooms. However, we have been replacing the carpets and during the low season, we will continue to gradually replace carpets that have stains.
We regret if the damaged items were not repaired immediately and would like to apologise for this. We will try to find out why it hasn’t been done and will make sure that this won’t happen again.
In our opinion, our Spa is not expensive and if you compare our prices to the prices of other comparable Spa’s in this area, you will find that our prices are similar or even lower. Nevertheless, and as a small suggestion for everyone who would like to use our Spa Services and save some money: during our Spa Happy Hour, we offer 10% discount on all Spa services and massages, or ask for our treatment of the day whit 50% discount over the regular price.
We sincerely regret if you felt that our holidaying guests were not our main priority while the groups were in the Hotel. This was certainly not our intention. As you stated, and completely right, hotels have necessity to work with groups during the off-season. We always try to avoid that the events interfere with our daily operation, but sometimes we are forced to shut a outlet for a private function, like it happened during your stay, but we always make sure that our holiday guests still have other choices available, as for instance the Seafood restaurant you mention. We also treat all guests equally and always try to make sure that holiday guests and business guests have the same attentive service.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope that despite of these issues, we will be able to welcome you back to the Grande Real Santa Eulália.

Yours sincerely

Lovely location and grand breakfast buffet, but tired rooms and really not hospitable and unfriendly reception, had the feeling we bothering them with our issues. Would choose other 5 star hotel in same area for the money we paid.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review. We sincerely regret that you were not satisfied with your stay at our Resort and have to confess that we were surprised that the main reason for your disliking was our reception. Of course, different guests have different expectations and perceptions, but the usual feedback regarding the friendliness and helpfulness of our staff, in particular the reception team, is very positive, and usually referred to as being our biggest asset. We regret if it was different in your case and will pass your comment to our Front Office Management.
Thank you once again for your feedback.

Kind regards

Stayed here looking for a nice resort on the beach in the Algarve. The hotel is located about 15km east of Albufeira. Many restaurants and shopping options in this town. Historic town of Silves is within 30-40 minute drive and well worth the trip.

The resort itself is large and very impressive. The lobby and common areas are well appointed. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. There is a nice fitness center, business center (complimentary), and complimentary wireless internet (signal strength varies throughout the day). There are several pools at the resort and these are quite nice. The beach is public and essentially down some steps from the resort. The breakfast buffet is excellent and probably the best we had during this trip to Portugal (and we had some nice breakfast buffets at other hotels where we stayed). This is not like a usual buffet. There are items such as smoked salmon, champagne, almond croissants, pain au chocolat, etc.

The only suggestion for improvement would be the rooms. They are comfortably appointed but not up to the standard of a "5-star" establishment. The furniture and bathroom reminded me of an upscale Holiday Inn or Best Western. No other issues. Would gladly return.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your kind and detailed description of the Hotel. We regret that the furniture and bathroom, did not entirely correspond to your expectations. There are currently no plans to refurnish the rooms in the near future, since the Hotel is only 6 year old, but we will have your comment in consideration for the future. We are glad that you were satisfied with all our other services and facilities, and in particular our breakfast buffet. We would just like to add a small note in order to avoid misunderstandings. The Hotel is not located at 15 km from Albufeira, but approximately 1,5 km.
We hope that we will be able to welcome you back to the Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel SPA.

As this hotel is a five star i had very high expectations and i was'nt dissapointed. We were picked up from the airport in a courtesy car and brought directly to the hotel where the staff on arrival couldnt do enough for us.
Hotel room was very comfortable,Spa was fantastic and there is a swimming pool that is part of the spa but guests can avail of.
Outside swimming pools fab and fruit kebabs offered to guests complimentary.
Beautiful location right on a private beach.
The hotel is very near the local town of Albufeira where everyone was friendly and restaurants very reasonably priced.

We have just had a lovely week at the hotel and didn't want to leave. We had a suite as we had our young son with us, which meant lots of extra space and an extra bathroom. Everything was great quality and we were really well looked after. I didn't lift a finger all week and that's what I call a holiday. The food, service and location are all excellent. Having a good beach so close to a good hotel is rare and what drew us there in the first place and it worked well for us. It is a peaceful location and we slept wonderfully, even on the firm mattresses! It is spacious and comfortable and free internet access in the business centre was useful.
I read a few earlier reviews and it seems the grumbles came from people who stayed at the hotel in peak season. Maybe the hotel struggles a little then. Everyone can always say that not everything was absolutely to their liking because it really isn't possible to please all of the people all of the time. There was nothing that detracted from our enjoyment of a lovely holiday. The reviewer who complained that the pool staff don't come round and clean your sunglasses should be ashamed of himself. Someone else complained that there is no concierge but the pleasant reception staff do all that a concierge would do.
We are planning to go again next year.

Stayed for a week in Sept (2nd visit to resort). Yes it could do with a mini mart and yes the food is expensive, but the location is great (away from the madness of the strip/albuferia etc) and the staff & service are absolutely top notch. Could not be more helpful or pleasant and went out of their way to help us with 1 or 2 problems. Ask and you shall receive seems to be the motto. And the beds are grand. If you can't sleep here, you can't sleep anywhere.

1 Downside was the fact that the courtsey bus to albuferia ceased running after 6.20pm on the 9th sept which meant getting a taxi. I think the service could be extended a bit later in the season. Also the carpet in our room was getting a bit "used" looking. Would also recomend when booking room to ensure you get one that doesn't overlook the car park, much nicer to look at the sea/resort.

Everyting else about the place oozes class, it's a bit dear, but if you like the albuferia area, and being well looked after in great location, but away from the rowdiness, then this is it. I will return.

By the way, I used Algarve 365 to transfer to/from airport. Reasonable and efficent. Landed 10am and in hotel room at 11. Better than the bus !

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for your kind review and for sharing your experience at the Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel SPA. We would also like to thank you for your constructive comments and suggestions. It would indeed be very nice to be able to offer a mini market in our Resort, but unfortunately, we do not have an adequate area or space for this, but we will try to find a solution for this issue. We also understand that an extended shuttle bus service might be convenient, but since the number of guests reduced drastically since August, there was also a big decrease in the number of guests using the shuttle bus service. Instead of offering 6 tours per day we now offer 4 tours to Albufeira per day and still the maximum capacity of the bus is hardly ever reached. However, as you noted, we always try to offer a flexible service and to react proactively to our guests requests and feedback. Should we verify that the number of available tours is not sufficient, we will of course adapt our timetable accordingly. We agree that some of our carpets are looking tired or may even have stains that cannot be completely removed and are pleased to inform you that we are continually and gradually renewing our carpets. Since the occupancy has been very high over the last few months, we had to temporarily stop this project, but will continue the replacement of carpets during the low season.
Thank you especially for you kind comments. We are very glad that we have been able to provide you, for the second year, a nice and enjoyable stay at our Resort and that you were particularly impressed with our staff and our customer service. In fact, we were concerned since the comments lately have not been as enthusiastic as they usually were, and to receive such nice and encouraging reviews, as from you and the last reviewers, was therefore especially appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back for another hopefully pleasant stay at our Resort. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any assistance you might require.

Yours sincerely
