We planned for one week and due to the volcanic ash thingy, ended up stopping 13 days.

We all thought the hotel was very clean, very friendly and good value for money before having our flights cancelled. Once we explained our situation to the hotel, they were very supportive and incredibly helpful - evidenced by other families/couples coming to the hotel during the week.

With regard to the local restaurants, we tried Tiffany’s although weren’t that impressed with the curries and thought the prices were somewhat higher than they should be. We found the Chinese restaurant ‘Cozy’ a lot better quality of food and reasonably priced. Caffe Soft was good quality and reasonably priced food, with Bruno and his parents being fantastic. The best though, for us with children was Nelson’s. Very good food, ample quantities and a good rapport with the owners.

We found the location good, short walks to the various bars and restaurants, and not too far for our youngest (whose 4) to the beach and even over the beachhead to Falesia beach, which is really nice.

On balance (and considering the support during the week that was), we have no hesitiation in highly recommending the Hotel Velamar.

After being told there was no room in our hotel (Club Humbria) following cancellation of our flights (Icelandic volcano) We were left to find alternative accomodation our selves at 18.00 in the pouring rain. We were advised by a local travel office that there may be room at Hotel Velamar.
We walked into the reception with all our luggage in hand and slightly wet. from the rain. The receptionist was very friendly and welcoming and nothing was to much trouble he offered to show us round a couple of rooms before we decided in which to stay. Both myself and my wife wish we had gone to this hotel in the first place as the staff were much more helpful and friendly. we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone wishing to visit the area.

Having been to Albufeira on many previous occasions, we thought we would give Olhos d'Agua a try. Hotel Velamar is a little bit out of the centre (only about a 3-4 minute walk) but is incredible value for money. Next door is a bar which only charges 1 Euro for a glass of wine or a large beer. Next door to that is Tiffany's Indian Restuarant. Tiffany's has been raved about in other reviews. I am not sure why. It's OK. It's not amazing as people have made out in other reviews. Perhaps I've been spoilt being from Birmingham. Anyhow, a real bargain venue is Soft Caffe where Bruno and his mum & dad will make you feel more than welcome. At bargain prices to boot. Over the road there is probably the worst restaurant I have ever had the misfortune to visit. It is called something like Ariolas - avoid it like the plague!!! It is overpriced and the food is truly diabolical. I asked for a medium-well done fillet steak and was served raw steak. And I mean literally raw. My wife ordered minted lamb-chops. When they were served, there was no mint. When she queried this, she was told that they had run out, but the guy would be back in half an hour from the supermarket with some. By which point, her meal would have been cold. Do not visit this restaurant.

The hotel is nowhere near the beach or the sea. However, a 10 minute walk down the main road and turn right will bring you to the Riu Palace Algarve and then on down to the beach. There are some lovely rock pools for kids to play in, looking for fish and crabs. You can also walk up past some little fishing boats up a little hill and see views along the cliffs and beaches which you would have to see to believe.

The breakfast on offer is Continental, with a range of crossants, jam, toast, ham, cheese, butter, juice, coffee, tea, yogurt, fruit which is all OK.

The hotel is immaculate inside and the bar is reasonably priced too. However, the only downside is the pool area. The pool is ice cold, which is understandable for the time of year, but the pool area needs a bit of a facelift. I would not feel comfortable letting my daughter swim in it, which is a pity, because everything else is great.

My husband and I booked this hotel through Travelrepublic. We booked bed and breakfast and the price was so competitive we were a little concerned about the quality of accommodation and food (even with reassurances from our friends who had stayed there in November). We had nothing to worry about. This hotel was really good.

Reception - we arrived early and were able to check in and go to our rooms immediately. The receptionist on duty was very friendly and pleasant as was all staff in the hotel. Don't hesitate to ask for tips and recommendations they are only too happy to advise.

The room - The room was a generous size and had great sized beds (lumpy pillows though), free air conditioning/heat, free mini fridge, tv with some satellite channels such as Sky news (so we could keep up to date on what was going on back home) and music channels, loads of storage space and bathroom and a balcony. Our room (120) overlooked the road and even though we were there in low season and the room was double glazed the traffic noise was a problem. I would advise that you try to get a pool view room if possible. The shower was great most of the time but sometimes the water pressure was low and it was difficult to regulate the temperature. The room was cleaned every day and we were provided with fresh towels.

Breakfast - the breakfast was continental. Fruit juice, water, cereal, fresh fruit, various breads, tea/coffee, ham, cheese were all in abundance. The food was excellent. As for the breakfast room itself - what can I say? What a fantastic way to start the day with the sun shining through the glass, beautiful panoramic views of the sea and surrounding landscape and lovely fresh food every morning. I wish I was there now. There was also an outside terrace to the breakfast room with wicker seating and low tables. Who could ask for more? Again the staff were so pleasant.

Bar - another beautiful part of the hotel. The bar was beautifully presented with comfortable seating. a flat screen TV and a piano. Because we were there in low season the reception staff were also on bar duty. There wasn't a lot of people around so it was very quiet. But nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with a smile.

Pool - in my opinion for a hotel with 69 rooms I would imagine that this area could become quite crowded in high season. The pool was a bit on the small side. Because of the time of year there were very few loungers around the pool. There was no-one around the pool to use them anyway (except for us and our friends).

Location - as with most hotels in the Algarve there's a bit of a walk to the beach. Although the walk was very pleasant and the small beach on Olhos de Agua was very nice. The hotel isn't too far from the small village of Olhos de Agua (about a 15 minute stroll). At this time of year the village is very quiet and it's also not as touristy as Albufeira (which we liked). There are bus stops very close to the hotel and there is also a taxi rank about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. A taxi into Albufeira strip costs approx €5 and to Vilamoura approx €15. It was cheaper for 4 adults to get a taxi to Albufeira. There are some lovely local shops in Olhos de Agua which are worth a visit.

Overall experience - the hotel was excellent. It was clean, bright and fresh with excellent staff. The Portugese people are such lovely, friendly people. We couldn't have asked for more. Thanks to everyone at the Velamar. Hopefully we will get back again in the future.

Other tips

Eating Out - You don't need to walk far to get some very good quality, affordable food. On leaving the hotel if you turn right there are a few restaurants that we would highly recommend. Tiffany's is an Indian restaurant. The food and service was excellent. Also try the Three Marias. They had a special menu of a main course, dessert, coffee and a drink for €7. I had the best grilled pork ever there and the coconut mousse (homemade) was gorgeous. This price might go up in high season but what value and quality. Again the staff was so friendly. Well worth a visit. One of my favourite places to eat was Jollies. Come out of the hotel, turn left towards the village and a very short walk away is Jollies. The owners, Jackie and Jose, were fantastic. Jackie is English and is the hostess while Jose is Portugese and is a wizard in the kitchen. The hospitality from both of them was relaxed, friendly and first class. We felt so comfortable there. Jose makes his own piri piri sauce which is excellent (and hot!). My husband and I don't often return to the same restaurant when on holidays but we visited Jollies 3 times in a week. Fantastic.

Nightlife - again because of the time of year the bars in Olhos de Agua (those that were open) were very quiet. Although we did have a good night in the bar at the Oceanus Aparthotel with Gary and Ian. A word of warning though - we went to the Black Cat bar one night and didn't get our drinks bill till the end of the night (our mistake). Try to pay as you get your drinks so that you avoid any unpleasant surprises at the end of the night. Lesson learned. We also visited the strip in Albufeira. Again because of the time of year many places hadn't opened yet. Matt's is worth a visit and it's great craic watching people on the mechanical bull. We also encountered one of the worst bars ever. I'm ashamed to say it was an Irish pub called Devlin's. Avoid at all costs. Even though there was only 6-7 customers before we arrived the place was filthy and the barmaid was smoking behind the counter. We couldn't get out of the place quick enough. Another tip - if you want to buy a cocktail in some of the bars on the strip find out what they are using in them before ordering. I had a strawberry daiquiri and it was the worst I ever had.

All in all a very relaxing holiday and I would say that the Velamar is definitely worth a visit.

We stayed in this hotel almost 1 month because we wanted to be sure that we want to live in Portugal for longer time. Velamar hotel is great hotel with friendly staff. It's great to be there if you like to be served on highest level - recepcion, breakfast and then go to nearby restaurant, or explore Algarve but car - pretty strategic place. Room was big and nice - choose side with poolview if you can, the other side is on noisy street. We had great room no. 221! Wifi is free in lobby. Breakfast was buffet and great - fresh fruit and much more.
