The villa complex claims to be 4 star but does not in my opinion meet these standard. The villas was old and in need of updating
Bedrooms very small . sofas uncomfortable.
Service in the bar and restaurant was slow
Sun beds etc must have been there for 10 years
Shuttle bus promised by travel agent was not there
Despite this we still enjoyed the holiday However the rating should be dropped to 3 star in my opinion

We have just returned from an 11 night stay at the Ponte Grande Resort and have to comment on what a fantastic place it was for a nice relaxing family holiday. I booked this holiday online for my husband, my three sons aged 16, 13 and 10, and myself way back in dreary December and as it was my first time booking online, I was very nervous as to what we were going to get. Flights and transfers were on time and we were delighted that the resort was only a 35minute trip from Faro Airport. First impressions of resort were excellent - reception and pool area were spotless. While we had to wait for awhile to check in as we arrived at 10.15am, it was worth the wait to get our villa. Plenty of room, two bathrooms, kitchen, large living area, two bedrooms, and a storage room under the stairs which was great for storing the suitcases as that usually takes up half the apartment space in previous apartments we have stayed in. Snack bar menu was good and quite reasonable. Took us awhile to locate the good restaurants in the area - two to note were the Sunshine Bar which is behind the resort (take a right out the gate and up first dirt track to the right) and the Praia Grande (straight across from gate down the road to the beach, about a 10min walk). Also good Chinese down the road. Resort is a ten minute taxi ride to Old town of Albufeira so it makes it a bit expensive on taxis, particularly as there was five of us so we had to get two taxis. (we later discovered mini-bus driven by Pedro - ask at bar for details.

Entertainment in the resort was only fair, but then again it depended on the crowd which as there were alot of families there who went to bed early. Carlos the bongo man was good! The bar staff were friendly, even though they were under pressure as they had to serve as waiters in the restaurant as well. Mini market in resort is a little expensive, also local supermarket but you can get a taxi (about 5euro) to the Modelo Shopping Centre which is like a Tesco if you wanted to do a big shop to stock up on minerals fruit wine etc. Old town Albufeira is nice but a bit commercialised so it suited us to stay out of there as the lads would have had us robbed!!

All in all a very relaxing holiday in a very safe and clean environment and would definitely recommend. And despite other reviews, you COULD survive without a car - just be prepared to pay a bit extra for taxis!!! Full marks to staff at Ponta Grande!!!

This resort was very quiet in April & should have provided a peaceful & relaxing environment - but for the local dogs which seemed to bark for about 20 hours per day & night.

This was a real shame as it spoilt a good week. The local beach (10 mins walk) is great & if you feel up to it the walk into Albufeira old town takes less than an hour. if not, a car is essential or a taxi into town will cost about 7 Euros.

The townhouses are really good with lots of space & equipment, & I would recommend the resort to others - but don't forget your ear plugs!

This resort is very very good. The Villas are some of the very best available RCI resorts i have stayed in . 2008 sees the restaurant under new management and its spot on, great prices which is unusual as i tend to find restaurants affiliated to hotels are expensive but not this one loads of choice for around 8-15 euros and really friendly staff John , Fabio to name two.

Great little resort - villa was fab - can't fault it. Not really any night time entertainment but that makes it great for families with young kids as you can get to sleep - just a little karaoke from the bar in the corner which was nothing. Great pool, adequate little snack bar, nice breakfast. Not far from beach - great base!

we had a wonderful holiday at this resort. The villa was lovely well equipped and spacious. We stayed in villa 11 which overlooked the pool. The staff were friendly and helpful. The grounds were well maintained with many beautiful plants and flowers. There was always plenty of space to relax by the pool. We ate lunch at the hotel most days which was fine. In the evenings we ate out. There is a great chinese restaurant called the Grande Mundo which is next to a well stocked supermarket and bakery. They are out of the main entrance and turn left and walk for about 5 mins there is also another one round there called margem sul. Straight across from the hotel is a road down to the beach. We found a fantastic place to eat down there it's on the right hand side just before you reach the beach. It has great views and amazing food. I think it had Praia in it's name. The beach itself is beautiful. It is worth the 10 min walk down. It has a bar, toilets and showers. It is clean and you can hire sunbeds and canopys.
This was such a good holiday for us that we have booked to go back for two weeks.

We, a family of three including a teenage daughter, have just returned from our second holiday at the Ponta Grande resort. Both times we have stayed at February half term, and we have loved it.
Firstly, the accommodation here - VERY spacious two bedrooomed houses with a very good sized terrace and maid service twice a week. For sheer value for money at this time of the year, I do not think this can be beaten - we've paid around £189 for a week including electricity, maid service, linen etc. The resort is graded as four star, but it is fair to say that like a lot of holiday accommodation it could do with a bit of an update in places - there's an occasional cracked tile and the taps could be replace, but overall it's an extremely nice place to stay. The grounds and the pool are kept in very good order. My tip would be not to book on a bed and breakfast basis, but just to go to the restaurant for breakfast as and when you want to - the choice is wider and you are not tied. If you're going to be cooking, take a decent oven glove with you as they are not provided, and be prepred to buy a cheap non- stick frying pan locally, or spend ages scrubbing the metal frying pans provided !

Secondly the location - yes, it's outside Albufeira, but that's exactly why we loved it. I would not stay here without a car, but you are ideally positioned here to potter up and down the coast in either direction and explore the many beautiful beaches and interesting towns. Lagos, Portimao, Tavira, Carvoeira, Faro old townand Albufeira itself are all well worth a look . Driving we found to be relaxed and stress free, and car pickup at Faro airport could not be easier. You are also within three minutes by car of what we personally consider the most beautiful beach we have found here - the Sao Rafael beach, surrounded by beautiful golden cliffs and where the waves pound against the rocky outcrops - so relaxing. There is a very nice looking restaurant and bar on the beach which is open from March onwards, which must be a stunning location to dine in. The next two beaches to the west are also very beautiful and reachable within five minutes by car.. You can also be in Albufeira Old Town within five minutes or so by car, and they are clearly making efforts to do this up at the minute - we look forward to seeing the results. The big square there is very attractive, and there are a few bars and restaurants looking out over the fishermen's beach which are lovely to sit at and watch the world go by.
In February we have had pretty good weather both times we have been - occasionally you might want a mac or a fleece, but thgere's generally been enough sunshine at some point each day to sit in a sleeveless top and get some sun. There are quite a lot of retired people there at this time of the year, and the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed.
Practicalities - if you're going to self cater then find a big Continente supermarket when you arrive - there's one at the excellent Algarve shopping centre at Guia, about three or four miles away. Aldi and Lidl are also represented locally, but I did have the feeling the one in Albufeira was loading its prices for the tourists - others seemed cheaper.. Generally prices are very good compared to the UK. If you have a special diet for medical reasons as we do ( gluten free) this is a good place to go on holiday. You can cook for yourself, but there's also a lot of plain english food available in the restaurants - omelettes, steaks, Englsh breakfasts, salads etc - and people speak good English so you can be sure of finding something to eat, always a comfort!. The supermarkets carry a good range of English cheeses and other products (Marmite, Heinz ketchup...), and Continente have a special section with special dietary foods, so you don't have to take a lot with you, which is really helpful when you're flying.
Overall we've found this a wonderful place to sneak a week at this most miserable time of the year, and cannot wait to go back !
