“Hotel Da Gale - ok on a budget”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Stayed with family in August, had a great holiday in Albufeira. If you treat this hotel as a 2 star budget hotel - somewhere to use as a base and to sleep in, then it's reasonable.

Best selling point of the hotel is the amazing views from inside and just outside the hotel. You can see the whole of Albufeira and the sea from the bar and terrace on the top floor. Many of the rooms have a balcony with different views.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean, it said cleaning was every 3 days, but our room was cleaned 3 times.

The location is good - downhill walk to the old town and beach in 10 mins. Main square and fishermans beach about 30 mins walk. New town, supermarkets like lidl, aldi, continente, McDonald's and fast food are a couple of miles away - better off taking a taxi or bus.

There is free wi-fi, but it only works on the top floor or reception.

Negatives - the hotel is on the top of a fairly steep hill. There are lots of stairs in & out. This hotel is not for those with mobility issues, or the elderly. You'll need to be reasonably fit to get in and out in the August heat. 4th floor is closest to reception and front and rear entrances.

The rooms are small and need redecorating. There is no air con. The shower only heats up in the evening. The lift don't work. There was only 1 plug point in the room. There is a charge for using the room safe. The room tv is small ( about 17 inches CRT), but did show English/ American channels, eurosports, us movies, CNN, BBC, etc.

Room Tip: Rear facing rooms with balcony have a view of the sea, higher the better if you can manage the stair...

this hotel needs attention immediately. The standard is not a two star in our opinions. We hated the room and was told if we wanted to change we would have to pay 90 euro which we refused to pay any more to stay. Breakfast is bearable which consists od bread, jam and butter. 2 choices of aldi cereal. fruit but basics. orange juice and a coffee machine. you can eat inside or out on the terrace which was breath taking because of the views. There was a bit of a terrible smell on occasions. We did not let this ruin our holiday as we had a lovely stay in albufferia. The location of the hotel is at the very top of the old town so it is a bit of a trek back up. The beach is perfect and we spent every day there.

Room Tip: we stayed in 405 and it had no balcony no patio and no view only the side view of the next door hote...

Entrance and reception not that bad and location just 5min walk into old town square, recommend taxi back as its uphill..now for the room and breakfast..stayed in twin room very dated, old portable tv with no remote, stained pillows, dirty toilet, bath, shower holder broke, wash basin very slow to drain, old lead pipes everywhere, needs total refurb..for breakfast its basically a drink of coffee, orange squash, some jam and bread and a huge choice of 2 cereals which one of them looked like rabbit droppings! wudnt stay here again unless it was for free! must say the reception staff were best part of stay, very helpfull.

Room Tip: Is there a good room?

This is the most disgusting place I have stayed! There was rubbish around the common areas, the pool was dirty, the sheets had holes, when we got there there was a strong smell of chlorine coming from the bathroom and we soon found out this was to cover the stench of urine coming from the toilets which was unbearable!!!! This also meant there was no security as we had to leave the window constantly open. We asked the reception if we could change rooms ( so we didn't feel like vomiting when entering) and we were told there were rooms but we would have to pay more. I was not going to pay an extra cent to stay there. I understand that this is a 2 star hotel, however, I mainly stay in hostels and this was nowhere near a hostels standard. This place should be closed by the health authorities. Absolutely gross!!!

This is more of a hostel trying to be a hotel, but if you booked here, you know it was cheap so don't expect 4 or 5 star quality. Our room 403 was clean, tidy nice balcony. Shower in bath a bit 1970s but it worked and was clean. No smells. We asked for extra pillows and got them no problem. Louisa(forgive spelling) is lovely and couldn't be more helpful, what some people might mistake for rudeness with the other male staff is probably down to lack of poor English and poor training(or no training) breakfast is pretty poor but with in 5 minutes walk you can have good options for small money. Try a bifana (porksteak in a bap) and coffee for about €4. It is on a hill but going down is easy and a taxi back from town centre is only a fiver.
I would say as others have said it is a base, sleep and wash here, it is not a luxury hotel, remember you didn't pay luxury prices.
We are leaving tomorrow with no complaints.

Room Tip: You pay your money and you take your chances, 403 was ok for us
