“Whats not to like?”
Reviewed 13 May 2011

My husband and I were back to this fine hotel after an indecently short time! Again without our children. A request for an early check in was met with no problems, an enormous bonus when taking an early flight. This place has a "feel good" factor with its glorious views and manicured gardens. There is an overall feeling of cleanliness and a high standard of service throughout. There were some extra touches from our last visit such as outdoor double beds with a colourful array of beanbags scattered in the gardens facing the ocean. Bliss. This addition, the manager informed me was in response to sunbeds being dragged from the pool to said location. Clearly customer satisfaction of prime importance. In order to give a balanced view, if I had a criticism it would be the price of drinks and the slightly repetitive breakfasts. I longed to see a bowl of muesli yoghurt and some smoked fish perhaps? However ,prompt service of coffee served with warm milk and the offer of champagne at breakfast cushions any disappointment! I like the choice of being able to dine in the hotel or out.Often half board is forced on you. I would say that the seafood night let them down however as late diners suffer from the fish drying out under the lamps. I would imagine the offering pretty nice when consumed earlier on though.Had a great seafood stew in the restaurant tucked up in the hill opposite the "square" as you walk down from the hotel into the town. Delicious. Also liked "la cigale" right down at the water. All in all a perfect break.

We had a wonderful holiday at this excellent hotel. The accommodation, service and food are first class. The special feature of the hotel is the sea view, especially from the three decked areas known as The Lookouts. These are very serene places and it is a joy to sit and truly relax.
The Hotel shares the same site as two other Hotels - the RIU Palace and the RIU Guarana. It basically has two sides - the back and the front. The back has the sea view rooms overlooking the pool and the gardens and are superb.. The front has views of the car park, five a side football pitch and is overlooked by the Guarana Hotel - not good.
We paid 200 euros extra for a side-sea view - which we could see on the horizon and is very poor value.
The Hotel accepts smoking in the room and welcomes smoking around the pool and at the lunch bar. Our neighbour smoked hundreds of Camel cigarettes during our stay - horrid.
We asked to change rooms twice and met a firm 'NO'.
It is a lovely place to be and we really relaxed and enjoyed the back of the hotel - keeping our time on the front to a minimum.
We have also been to the Porto Bay Resort in Madeira - which is a step up from Falesia and you should go there as a better option.

Room Tip: Do not pay a penny extra for a side sea view

Thank you very much for your review and comments. During your stay the hotel was complety booked, not giving us a chance to change rooms, which we do regularly. Looking forward to welcome you back at the Porto Bay Falésia. Best regards. Fernando Reis Filipe

Normally arriving at a 4 star hotel we can usually down rate it to 3 pretty quick. Not this one. The staff were all extremely courteous and the room was very good even though it did not have a full sea view. Food was excellent and extensive for both breakfast and evening meal. Happy Hour helped to offset the high drink prices charged and unusually for a european hotel there is tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

Room Tip: Side sea view room is fine with late afternoon sun

This was our third stay at the Porto Bay Falesia in the last twelve months and will not be our last. The standards remain high and we love the cliff top location. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the food is good, the bedrooms are very comfortable and the grounds are immaculate. Forget about reserving sunbeds at this hotel - it just dosen't happen, there's plenty of beds/space for everyone. We also had fabulous weather for the week that we were there. I would continue to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday with great service in a fantastic location.

It has been said by the other reviewers of this hotel: the location is great. It's beautifully situated on a cliff overlooking the beach. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are clean, tidy and well equipped. The food is fine (but not extraordinary)
Our kids appreciated the animation team a lot (especially the Brazilian girl!)

But... there are a few points that irritated me a lot...

1. There's no free internet available. Wifi is available, but costs a whopping 16€/day or over 60€/week. The Wifi (provided by Swisscom) recognises your browser and operating system, so wifi access with your phone will cost you "only" 9€/day. Hotels should realise that wifi access has become a normal, basic service in modern hotels. Free wifi is available in most cheap roadside motels, McDonald's etc. Come on, Falesia: give customers free wifi (in the lobby at least! ) You're providing free TV in the rooms aren't you? Well, free wifi has become just as basic as a TV in the room!

2. The rooms all have a safe, but you will have to pay for it! Ok, it was "only" something like 10€/week, but if the hotel can't guarantee the honesty of their cleaning staff and the safety of your properties in the room, they should let you use the in-room safe for free. That is a principle!

3. Dinner (in half-board) does not include ANY beverage. So you're obliged to buy a bottle of wine or water. Wine or water is not available by the glass on the drinks menu.

OK, the price for this hotel is fair, but they shouldn't force money out of their guest wallet in this way.
The staff may be friendly, but the hotels does not show very much hospitality by their charging-for-basic-facilities policy. (It's not about the money, but about the principle!!)

Reason enough for me not to return to this hotel, nor will I recommend it to friends, despite the many good points.

Room Tip: Book a room with seaview!

Thank you very much for your review and compliments. We understand and respect your point of vue about extras policy which are not included on our basic rate such as safe rental (optional and includes insurance) or free drinks with half board (half board is optional and doesn't includes drinks) or other extra services. As you stated we do charge an reasonable price for all the included services but probably we were not the type of hotel you were looking for. Best regards. Fernando Resi Filipe

We spent one week before Easter at the "Porto Bay Falesia". The only bad thing was "The Weather"! But having checked the forecasts we rented a car and visited Sevilla, did some sight seeing and shopping!

I was impressed by the professionalism of the hotel staff. Everybody was so nice and helpful! We booked two frontal sea view rooms and would really recommend you do the same! Even with the rain the cliffs and the grey sea were beautiful! :)

We booked half board - the food was ok - not exceptional, a bit repetitive but good. We enjoyed the breakfasts very much; a huge variety of fresh fruit, the French toasts and the pancakes were our favourites!

Internet connection in our rooms was quite expensive but we could not complain about the speed.

I would really recommend this hotel to anybody - I guess the best time of the year would be in summer - then you are sure about the weather!

Cheers, Sara

My partner and I just returned from a week at the Porto Bay Falesia. The hotel is modern - only opened three years ago - and has great facilities. The large pool was clean and never overcrowded and as a result we had no issues finding sun loungers. The room was nicely laid out with a huge and comfortable bed! I would recommend opting for a room with a sea view as we overlooked the carpark. With the hotel's prime location on the top of a cliff it would have been nice to wake up to it every morning. The beach was only a five minute walk away down some rather steep steps but definitely worth it for the spectacular views. Happy Hour in the hotel bar from 5-6pm was a highlight with many drinks on half price - a perfect way to wind down after a hard day at the pool! Manuel and Carlos were particularly friendly and helpful.
All in all a great week!
