“Pros and Cons”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

Stayed here on a mini-moon for 4 nights last week.
It's very much a good and bad situation. I'll start with the good:-

Pros:-

The public areas are great - pool is fab, lobby is spotlessly clean.
The staff are great! So attentive. We arrived early before check in time so we went for a drink in the bar and a bit of sunbathing. The gentleman from the check in desk came and found us as soon as our room was ready.
The hotel delivered a bottle of Prosecco to our room on arrival as it was our mini-moon.
The bed was extremely comfortable. Seemed like maybe a memory foam mattress, although I could be wrong, but it was great.
Location is great - Ochos D'Agua is a lovely little town - plenty of choices to eat and drink and the hotel is only a short walk down a bit of a hill.
The beach is lovely too (not strictly part of the hotel but I thought I'd mention it!)

Cons:-

The rooms are distinctly average. Definitely wouldn't call them generous rooms.
The silly extra costs - wi fi €6 per 24 hours and €1.50 a day for the safe is RIDICULOUS. When you're paying that much for a room you expect those things to be standard, which brings me to the next point - the cost.
For what you get bedroom-wise it's an expensive hotel. For example a large beer is €4.80 in the bar whereas you can go around the corner and get a large beer for around €2 and you'll get free wi fi with that too!!

Would I stay here again? I'd have to say no. Purely based on value for money.

Thank you very much for your review and compliments. You should compare what you had for free, location and service with final price. We have our extras costs like other hotels and a insurance together with the safe fee. Looking forward to welcome you back at the Porto Bay Falésia. Best regards. Fernando Reis Filipe

Our sixth stay at this hotel, the standard is of the highest , food is excellent with a wide variety, staff are always friendly and helpful, rooms are very comfortable and clean and the location is fantastic with access to the sea via steps that are quite challenging but help to keep you fit.

The staff were really excellent, couldn't have been better. There was a wonderful panoramic view of the sea from a cliff top location, it was just beautiful. Five-star food. Everything was WOW! I can't think of anything bad to say...

This was our first time in Portugal and afraid to say we won't be back this is not because of the hotel as it was a excellent and lovely setting, only problem the beach was quite a steep walk down.
The hotel rooms could do with a refurbishment as a bit dark and dated. The hotel staff with the exception of most of the restaurant staff were very nice. Restaurant staff unsmiling, unfriendly and not very helpful.

The village itself was very tacky, and lacking in nice bars and restaurants, obviously some people have not gone anywhere else except here.

We were told the Portuguese people were friendly but only found a few who were.

Room Tip: Any room is fine

We have just spent a week at this hotel and have had a fantastic time. The hotel was clean, the views were stunning, the staff were helpful and it was a pleasant and relaxing stay. The Italian restaurant is lovely, be sure to book a cliff side view. The beach is stunning and is literally down some steps. I would strongly recommend this hotel.

This has become a favorite of ours to keep coming back to - we always book a sea view room as we like the outlook over the pool and cliffs to the sea below. The pool is really good and plenty of sun-loungers are available there and on the grass on the cliff top - and for variety there is always the brilliant beach below (and fresh sardines for lunch:-)
The breakfast is great and so is the pool bar for lunch, the Italian alfresco restaurant on the cliff top is very good but you need to book as it is popular. I agree that the evening buffet is not great - they try to do too many things, its a bit of quantity over quality. The chefs are good as they do great food for the lunch and for the Italian. And of course there are plenty of paces to go elsewhere for a meal - Ambrosia down the road is a favorite.

Most importantly though is when we think about all the things they get right we know this is a great place to come to. Stunning setting and facilities plus great rooms with everything you want - good wardrobes, plenty of plugs, kettle, fridge, good lighting, mirrors, great shower, plenty of towels etc etc. The staff are all brilliant and very friendly and helpful. The reception staff in particular are first class. Its a very well managed hotel and if anything goes wrong they try hard to put it right.

We will be back I am sure.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view - take advantage of the setting

My husband and I have just today come back from a weeks stay at the Porto Bay, I have to say it's a lovely hotel although after reading some of the previous reviews in here about the place I was a little worried (poor food buffet, small dated rooms, views of car parks etc) I needn't have been worried at all, and I'm really not sure if the people who wrote those reviews were staying at the same hotel!

We were in room 272 a standard garden view room, which was a decent size, spotlessly clean and had a view of part of the hotel garden at the back and a Felesia Mar Beach club. No big deal, and rather pleasant, after all, how much time do you actually spend in your hotel room in daylight..... I'd bet, not that much, so why pay extra for a sea view you probably won't see much of as you're out and about all day anyway?! We had no problem with noise of any sort and it was a decent room, well furnished, cleanly decorated, with two large singles made up together to make a overly large superkingsize sized bed which was comfortable as they had memory foam mattress toppers which added to the comfort. One tiny complaint I'd have about the room would be the pillows, they're huge and fluffy and look fabulous on the bed when it's all made up, but they really were all fluff and no substance, as soon as you put your head on them they disappeared! We ended up having to place a folded blanket under the pillows to hike them up a bit. It's a small niggle but one worth mentioning. A good selection of TV channels should you want to watch tv too. Bathroom was laid out well and did the job it needed to.

My husband and I were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary while we were there and on our arrival day we had a bottle of bubbly chilling waiting for us in our room which was lovely. We also indulged in a couple of massages in the spa which were great value for money and absolutely divine, the staff in the spa were so friendly too.

The whole hotel was spotlessly clean and the daily maid service made sure that rooms were clean and well presented too. A big up for the housekeepers, they do a great job!

Breakfast buffet was lovely and a huge selection to cater for all nationalities and tastes. We stayed on half board basis and ate at the evening buffet which I can honestly say we have no complaints about whatsoever, again lots of choice and a themed night each night so always something different in main dishes to choose from. I honestly have no idea what previous reviewers were on about when they complained about the evening buffet.

We thought drinks were on the expensive side but then that's 4* hotels for you, it happens everywhere, we aren't big drinkers anyway and were happy with mineral water with our meals which was fine. In comparison to the local restaurants drinks prices then I can can imagine a few folk may have walked into the village to enjoy a drink elsewhere, but I expect if you weren't into doing a bit of exercise and having a walk then staying at the hotel and paying what they charge wouldn't break the bank (if you had a sturdy bank account).

We didnt use the pool as we don't really do lazing around and sunbathing but it looked very nice, clean and with plenty of loungers around it and on the grassy area to the side. There were also lovely large day beds available on one of the decks overlooking the sea. We would walk and sit down there after our evening meal to relax and look out over the sea, it was lovely.

My one and only real gripe was the wifi, you had to pay for it. I'd expect free wifi in a 4* hotel, in fact it's the first hotel I've stayed in that hasn't had free wifi. Pretty much every bar and restaurant in the village of Olhos de Agua had free wifi available. If they can do it, why can't the hotel? We would often take a walk down to the beach in Olhos and stop off for a drink in one of the bars and connect with their free wifi. It's a simple thing and pretty much what I'd expect for no extra charge in a hotel.

I've stayed in Olhos before, 15 years ago to be precise, before the Porto Bay was built and it was a sleepy fishing village then, yes the village has expanded in that time but not to the point of it being spoiled, it still has it's charm, a lovely neat beach and fishing boats that go out catching sardines. If you want banging night out in pubs and clubs then this is not the resort for you, go to Albufeira for that!

So to sum it up, a fantastic holiday in a very nice hotel, with good food, lovely rooms and great staff. Two things need sorting out, thicker pillows and free wifi. However we had such a great time there we are already considering returning.

Room Tip: If you're out and about most of the day, don't bother paying extra for a sea view, it's...
