“Excellent stay, will come back”
Reviewed 29 July 2011

We stayed at Monte Santo for a week in July and I really loved it. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom town house, the accomodation was outstanding with jacuzzi in both bathrooms, great kitchen in granite with all appliances and mod cons, marble like floors throughout, air con, etc The beds were extremely comfortable with plenty of pillows and excellent bed linen. The pool was lovely, and there was also sauna, games room and gym. I was a bit worried with the service after reading some reviews but we just used the restaurant on arrival for a light lunch, the service was friendly and quick, the food was good (pizza + 2 big sandwiches with chips) and we pay 30 euros for that. We were on self catering so we didn't use the restaurant at all after that. Staff at reception was friendly and efficient at all times and did everything to help when we needed them. My only complaint is regarding the cleaning in the house, I noticed some bits on the floor and also sometimes found the odd hair in the bathroom and in the bath. I mean the cleaners did come in every day but the cleaning wasn't great. I think it's just a matter of the management talking to the cleaning staff and getting this sorted. It was just a minor thing and we are definetly coming back, it's a great place in a great location. I do advise you to rent a car and explore all the lovely beaches around as we did and it was such a pleasure to come back to the townhouse after a day out.

We've just had a really enjoyable stay here, the resort layout offers something for everyone. It's great that each cluster of townhouses have their own pool, and we really loved the main pool with its bridges etc.

The accommodation is most definitely 5 star - really lovely - and the kitchens were very well equipped (even if it did take us 4 days of asking to finally get an alternative to wine glasses!) Which leads me to service... not 5 star! It's a shame because there were a couple of friendly, obliging waiters at breakfast, but if you arrived much after 9am, it was carnage - before 9am and it was fine! Seemed like a management issue to us, as we encountered similar shortcomings in service from reception staff.

If you go expecting four star (and at the right price - we felt prices were comparable with four star anyhow), you should come away happy! Lunch snacks were great value too.

(Word of caution for those looking to utilise kids clubs - there didn't seem to be a lot going on at the kids club - probably partly because you had to book 24 hrs in advance, and partly because the small wooden summer house looked pretty uninviting!)

Dear TripAdvisor Member,

We would like to start off by thanking you for selecting Monte Santo Resort for your Algarve holiday and for the time you have kindly taken to share your opinion on TripAdvisor.

With respect to your specific remarks, we have the pleasure responding as follows:

Breakfast: Over the last few weeks we have re-assessed the breakfast service. We are ever diligent in meeting guest expectations and have taken your comments seriously. Recent guest reviews has shown, this has improved and we will continue improving further.

Housekeeping: Over the years one of our distinguishing factorshas been our housekeeping service. Every internal staff meeting focuses on “going the extra mile” and we will certainly re-assess, as this is not common practice.

Kids Club: During the summer we are hosting a significant number of children. Through a reservation schedule we intend to guarantee the best possible service for our younger guests; councilors are limited to supervising a particular number of children. The wooden bungalow has been servicing its purpose adequately over the years and an upgrade is foreseen in due course.

We thank you again for your valuable feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to Monte Santo Resort shortly!

A beautiful 5 star Hotel in lovely peaceful surroundings. Just got back from a week here with my wife and 5 and 7 year olds. The kids loved both pools indoor and outdoor - they were always exceptionally clean and importantly were'nt freezing cold which we hear many of the Algarve Hotel pools can be. The apartment we stayed in was 1st class, comfortable, inviting open plan living room/kitchen area with flat screen TV and DVD - fridge, microwave even a dishwasher!! 2 double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and flat screen TV's in each. Clean, comfortable and attractive living. The staff couldn't have been friendlier or done more to help, the peace and quiet was sooo relaxing and the place has a lovely chilled vibe - just what we wanted to recharge our batteries and watch the kids have fun. You do need a car to properly enjoy the area and venture into the tackier resort of Albufeira, also the steep winding road to the Hotel would be a nightmare for the elderly or families with small kids/pushchairs but we knew this and that's why we hired a car for the week. The only minor gripe is that the in-room internet service was unavailable and the other internet signal in the main Hotel is very slow. It was our first visit to Portugal and it was made all the more memorable for staying at Monte Santo. Obrigado...

Let's start with the plus points! Mainly these are the apartments and the furnishings, they are fabulous! Gorgeous furnishings, fully equipped kitchen with granite worktops glass balcony, 2 bathrooms, lovely crisp white bed linen and very fluffy towels and sooooo much space!! You could actually live in them, so much so my husband remarked how great they were and that you knew you were moving on in life when your holiday apartment was bigger than your first home! The grounds are lovely too and very well thought out so that it feels like a small village. We also thought the food was lovely and of a high standard which is odd as other people have commented otherwise. We only ate on a lunch time though and mainly salads and pizzas, which were great and seemed to be freshly made, even the bases.

This is where the good points end I'm afraid! If you're expecting world class 5* star luxury this is not it, I hate it when people say that on here but it really isn't. There's many things that let it down on this front, but the stand out one is the service - which is appalling!!!! Let's start with the arrival, arrived at 1pm in blazing heat to be told our room wouldn't be ready until 3pm!!!!!! When we challenged them on this because on the web it says rooms must be vacated by 10, they disagreed said it was 12pm but they would see what they could do. We weren't offered any sort of welcome drink or hospitality despite this, which a real 5* hotel would certainly have offered. From then on the service went distinctly down hill! On the first night we ordered cocktails at the bar and despite there only bee one couple before us we waited 40 minutes (no exaggeration) for a beer and a cocktail, I ordered a Cosmopolitan and when it came it was blue!!!!!!!! And didn't taste like any Cosmopolitan I'd ever tried! On to breakfast which was really quite poor and of cheap quality for supposed 5* accommodation, there wasn't even condiments (I'm talking salt and pepper) on the tables the salt were in cheap sachets like you would get in a canteen and we never found the pepper. We also balked at the cheek of the place to charge extra for omelettes, crepes, pancakes etc (and make you wait half an hour for them!), it got almost comical in the end as the every morning we seemed to wait longer for our order and the number of pancakes got less it went from 4 too 2 by the end of the holiday!!!! They were also ridiculously disorganised, giving the wrong orders to people leaving you sat at messy and unset tables for half an hour! It was like a nice Fawlty Towers!! On day 5 of our break they had also run out of beer both bottled and draught, this didn't seem to have been resolved when we left two days later!!!!!

For us there was also an issue with the sheer amount of children, sorry families but it's incredibly annoying when you haven't got any of your own!!! And although this isn't the fault of the hotel the marketing does lead you to believe it is an upmarket golf and spa resort, not a posh pontins which is what it really is. That said if you have children and aren't necessarily going to encounter any of the service issues because you were using your own room this is a fabulous place for a self catering holiday.

In summary great for families with young children, but wouldn't recommend to anyone else. We would never go back due to the appalling service, we'd like to point out as well that we didn't think it was really the fault of the waiters as they were all lovely, there just seemed to be a complete lack of any kind of management or guidance!

Regarding your comments related the service, much has improved since your stay - We truly wish that you stay another time with us in a future nearby, to witness these improvements, which already are noticeable through various recent guest reviews.

Regarding your comment on children, yes, we are a family resort, but do cater to,e.g. couples, golfers, groups, honeymooners and spa-lovers too, who appreciate Monte Santo as a paradise with plenty to offer.

We really enjoyed out stay at the hotel, our apartment was modern and very comfortable, it had everything we could have wanted or needed. The staff are polite, friendly and very helpful, though they can be slow. The restaurant was a bit pricey (€15 for breakfast and €30 for dinner pp) and the food fairly plain so we eat out most evenings. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the town or taxis there cost €4.70, some other guest found this annoying especially if they had prams but it was never an issue for us. Although it was busy when we were there it has a very calm relaxed feel, an ideal place if you're looking to recharge!

Visited for 60th birthday week with family & 4 small grandchildren. Lived up to all our expectations just one problem we had 3 separate suites and asked for them to be close together but there weren't. With the small children this curtailed our evenings somewhat.we used algarvesuntransfers.com as per previous reviewer's recommendation and they were the cheapest by far for transfers to & from airport & very prompt & reliable
Will certainly go again
