Take a boat ride out of the city for around 30 minutes and you find yourself in one of the most peaceful places I have ever visited. Wonderful views and a very nice restaurant just off the beach, if you want peace and quiet for a day my advice would be go for it. For 10 euros per adult and young children go free (my daughter is 4 years old and we did not pay for her) it is well worth it.

Do visit! Stunning beach, great restaurant with fantastic wine and seafood. Service was top notch. Highly recommended. Ferries run regularly from Faro to the island.

A three quarters of an hour boat trip from Faro (10 euros only) takes you to Deserta Island a nature sanctuary at the southernmost tip of Portugal. A huge expanse of white beach is backed by brushland all completely unspoilt - very tranquil and calming. There is a restaurant and bar where you can escape the midday sun but otherwise it is a wilderness and whether you make a whole day of it or just a couple of hours at the end of the day it is a pleasant diversion from Faro itself.
