This museum is well worth visiting.as part of exploration of the old town of Faro. a sixteenth century convent. It’s a great place to stroll around, especially to keep out of the sun for a hour or so.

“Worth visiting, if only to keep out of the sun for a while.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013

This museum is well worth visiting. It's housed in a fabulous building with a great deal of history. Originally it was the cloisters of Nossa Senhora da Assuncao (Or Lady of the Assumption), a sixteenth century convent. It’s a great place to stroll around, especially to keep out of the sun for a hour or so. The few staff that were there spoke English and were very helpful with information.
The museum contains a collection of artefacts from the prehistoric to the medieval periods, including Roman & Moorish items uncovered in nearby sites, plus lovely azulejos and a nice collection of paintings. The main floor Roman mosaic is stunning, depicting Neptune and the four winds, & dates as far back as the 3rd century. Other items include various Roman statues & busts, and artefacts discovered during the excavations of Estoi (also worth visiting), decorative Moorish lamps and paintings from the Baroque and Renaissance periods.

Worth going just for the Roman mosaic which is stunning. Also there are lovely cloisters and interesting relics dotted about the museum.
