My boyfriend and I have just returned from a 10 night stay at the hotel. We always use Trip Advisor so thought we would share a few handy tips if you're thinking of visiting the hotel! (Book it its amazing!)
The hotel definitely lives up to its 5* rating. Its really impressive and set just a 2 minute walk to the beach (across a road) There isn't much else to do around the hotel but Lagos is just a 10 minute taxi ride away or you can take the beach route which takes about 25 minutes. The hotel is well established so if you're looking for a place to relax and unwind this is your hotel!
We were a little worried about the food at the hotel after reading a few of the previous reviews but it was excellent. We were booked in on a half board basis and breakfast alone was almost enough to see you through. They have everything from champagne to freshly prepared omelettes and a huge variety of fruit and hot dishes.
The evening meal was just as impressive with various hot and cold dishes, a vast salad bar, and cheese and biscuits for those that don't have a sweet tooth. I can highly recommend the cake!
We spent most of our time up at the infinity pool which was kept spotlessly clean. Each sun lounger has its own pillow and they often had live music (nothing heavy just a duo playing on their guitars) or quiet music playing in the background. The staff kept to pool area picture perfect moving any unused sun loungers back in to place to keep everything looking just perfect.
Unfortunately we had a day of rain but the hotel has a spa and indoor pool so we took full advantage of relaxing inside.
The room was five star, it was modern, clean, relaxing and lived up to the pictures. The bed was the comfiest we have stayed in and the black out curtains ensure you get a good night sleep without the interruptions of the early morning sun. We had a huge bath tub almost in the middle of the room with a double vanity unit and large wet room with the most amazing rain shower. We noticed that there are a few rooms with their own infinity pools at the top of the hotel so if you want something extra special it might be worth looking in to this.
A couple of negatives just to even things out. The service in the restaurant is slightly hit and miss. We were often left with dirty plates on the table or left without a drink. They could do with some extra staff to keep on top of people coming in and out of the restaurant. They also have some younger staff that work in the Italian restaurant/bar by the infinity pool aren't very good and could hear them moaning in their native tongue! Sometimes the service is exceptional and sometimes it is poor, the poor staff were consistently poor but the good staff were consistently helpful, polite, interactive and helped make the holiday experience to match the hotel's standard.
The wifi in the hotel is rubbish! I read similar reviews and thought 'why would I use the wifi on holiday' but even just to check emails etc was hard work. The wifi in the lobby is slightly better but still not great.
** Top tips **
There is a happy hour at the bar from 7 - 8:30 where all drinks are half price. We would buy a couple of drinks from there or bottle of wine and take it down to the restaurant with us. The offer also applies to water and soft drinks and they don't question how many you buy.
A gentleman came up with the great idea of putting a small shop in his house about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. He sells wine, beer, water, snacks etc at a really cheap price (bottle of rose approx €3) As the nearest supermarket is in Lagos this became our local shop. There's a fridge in the room so we bought a few packs of water and kept them in there thought the week.
Make sure you get two keys cards when you check in so that you can leave one in the switch when you are out as the fridge, sockets and air-con turn off so you will come back to a warm room, warm fridge and nothing re-charged otherwise.
Girls the hair dryer in the room is great, its not a travel size instead a big powerful hair dryer so don't worry about including that in your luggage.
If you want an extra special meal we would suggest Restaurante Dos Artistas in Lagos (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g189117-d1117360-Reviews-Restaurante_dos_Artistas-Lagos_Faro_District_Algarve.html). Book in advance to get the beautiful outside terrace. The food was amazing and the service was good. The menu was quite limited but that being said we liked the sound of nearly all of it and opted for the tasting menu.
We hope you found this information useful and enjoy your stay at the hotel as much as we did.
