“Beautiful modern hotel in the best resort in the algarve.”
Reviewed 16 January 2014 via mobile

As I have stayed in Lagos many times, I was glad to find a new luxury hotel. The majority of staff here were very pleasant and attentive and the hotel has the wow factor. We booked a sea view room which was at the front of the hotel overlooking the smaller pool, where there is also a snack bar serving lunch. We couldn't of asked for a nicer room. However the majority of rooms have a side sea view anyway, so it depends if you can justify paying extra.
The hotel is located along the meia praia beach, just across the road from the beach itself. A lot of accommodations in this resort can be a distance from the beach, so if you want a beach location, then this is ideal. However it is about a 20/25 mins walk into the resort centre, but there is a resort mini train that runs past the hotel which goes all around Lagos if you don't fancy the walk. The passenger train that goes through the Algarve also has a stop 2 mins away. Just make sure you get a timetable from the hotel reception. You can pay on the train and if you fancy venturing further a field then you could go to the town of Portimao. On a couple of occasions we used this train just to take us nearer to Lagos centre.( it only takes 5 mins from the train station to walk to the centre of Lagos). Taxis are also another option costing around 7/9 euros.
Lagos is the historical part of the Algarve, which has the old walls still surrounding the centre of the town. Imagine cobbled streets, small courtyards and lots of fabulous restaurants and quaint bars.
It is a shame that the hotel doesn't offer different dining options as we found it too expensive to drink in the hotel and so went out nearly every night. Bed and breakfast would of been my personal preference as there are far too many good restaurants in the town. Either that or All Inclusive to keep people more tempted to stay in the hotel.
All in all a beautiful hotel in a quiet location, close to the beach.

Nice Hotel but this is not a five star…

My wife and I stayed here for a last minute short flight break of 12 nights.
The Hotel is clean with modern rooms and a nice pool area. Food is nice and live music in the bar.

The Hotel is listed as five star, but unfortunately its just a four star if they are honest. I have stayed in a lot of five star places, this would not come close.

The Hotel has nice pleasant staff but is grossly understaffed. The leaning is towards saving money here, throughout the hotel.

The restaurant and food is nice. Its a buffet breakfast and evening meal. If you want to sit outside for breakfast or a fresh table, get down early. The buffet does not have enough staff to clear the tables. You may get a table outside or even with a clean table cloth, but you then have to set it yourself. A hunt for the butter, a knife and fork, sugar, milk, etc. Not enough staff to help you or re set properly. This is very annoying. They think this is five star. The noise is like a school canteen with a riot going on. The long queue at the fried egg station is 20 people long. Its manned by lightning as we called him. One egg at a time chef.

The evening meal is the same. Large tables where everyone joins you. Same again on tables, although slightly better at night with the setting. Very much a bun fight. It’s a get you fed and get out atmosphere. Not very relaxing. Bright lights at night, just functional. The Food is good quality though.

The restaurant next door is a million miles better. You can book every day if you want, no restrictions. We ate in this 95% percent of our stay, the rest in town. The table service is excellent and the waiter Jose, is a genuine asset to this Hotel. Nothing is too much trouble for this guy. You can have a meal in the Brown restaurant for a few Euros extra. This is positively worth it. Peaceful, dimmed lights, relaxing enjoyable meal, with a bottle of wine.

The pool restaurants are very basic. Three types of Pizza on offer or three salads, that’s it. Your better to go out down the road to a better restaurant with a real menu. If you want a drink at the sun bed you have to get it yourself. They could double the bars turnover in a week if they had one person asking for drinks orders, and a decent menu at the poolside restaurants. Again they don’t have the staff. The pool area is quite relaxing, not cleaned for a whole week though. If you sit on the same spot every day, you will find the glasses you left yesterday in the same spot every day. The pool is absolutely freezing. Its without doubt the coldest pool I have ever been in. I’m not joking it became a talking point with all the people we met. When you ask the staff they just shrug shoulders at you and grin.

The bar at night can take up to 40 minutes to get a drink at. They seem to offer a happy hour half price between 7pm and 8pm. The queue for drinks is out of the bar room into the reception area its so long. This is because people want a cheap drink though. Again if they had a waitress that took orders when you found a seat, they would sell more drinks. The bar staff are friendly enough, but with 25 people in a line waiting to be served, and they joking and spinning glasses with all the time in the world, its very aggravating.

Its such a shame this could be made a really nice top end hotel. More staff required especially in the bars. Better menu’s at the two outside bars, heat the pool, and employ staff in the restaurants on tables. A suitcase delivery to your room would help too. If you are used to real nice hotels and real five star service you will be very disappointed. Its nice but it is not a 5 star in a hundred million years. Its run to save the company money, that’s a fact.

My boyfriend and I stayed in this hotel in July 2013, this review is a little out of date but I see many reviews on here not delivering the appropriate points of the hotel/ location.

Here is our honest review:
We arrived at the hotel after a 2 hour drive from the airport. This is something that was not communicated to ANY of the other guests travelling with us via coach. Had we had known this we would have made sure we had water to drink on the coach....however when we did eventually arrive we were met by a gloriously white, modern hotel. Check in was very easy, you are required to give them card details just incase you don't pay a bill or damage something....my advice is to be carefull!!!

As everyone has said, the hotel is fabulous, there is no doubt about that! This hotel could be a 5* if not more with the effort put in. Yet it doesn't quite tick all of the boxes.

The information regarding breakfast/evening dinner times is only communicated on a small notice board in the reception area....that was the only information available. None of the cocktail making, wine tasting, cocktail hour that others have spoken about. The reception staff are great and will go the extra mile to help you, they have train times, information about different areas, ect to help you plan your time. They did always seem to be giving out information, maybe this is something the Thompson rep should have been doing! When we did see her she was either drinking at the bar or eating her breakfast....swiftly disappearing shortly after. She didn't seem any help to other guests, and quite frankly may as well had not been there!

The room was incredible, the most plush and comfortable space to relax in which is hard to find in a hotel room. However, the toilet door didn't close properly and the handle was only glued on, this came off when applying some force! There is an intergrated hair dryer in front of the mirror, small selections of toiletries which add a nice touch and a movable magnified mirror.....which I really wanted to take with me! There are dressing gowns and slippers also which is a nice detail. The room has set a standard with me and I doubt I'd find a better room in any other 4-5* hotel!

The hall way is rather dark but made interesting by colourful lights leading the way through.
The hotels cleanliness is undoubtably good, there was never any litter anywhere and the room cleaners were very friendly.

The pool area is nice, other couples do still go and put their towels out on the sun loungers....mainly English people which surprised me! The pool is freezing which I don't see the point in, it's hardly refreshing going from boiling hot to freezing cold! The indoor pool is lovely and free to use, it's all one level too which is great if you're not a confident swimmer! You are over looked by the gym though which can be a bit off putting, maybe blacked out glass would be better!

It was my boyfriend birthday while we were there and they sent him a bottle of wine and a fruit platter which we though was great attention to detail. The food was average. Some nights it was really bad and some were really good. Don't get me wrong, you couldn't starve as there was always something to eat, yet their concoctions were strange....as someone else has said there were prunes in a lot of dishes which is bizzar!!! This is not the food of a 5* hotel, someone has said that you could forfeit your "free" evening meal for the Italian restaurant by the pool.....this information was not available to us, as far as we were concerned we would have had to pay for it! The pool bars have ok food, we had pizza for €13 one day and on our last day we paid €20 euro for 2 cokes and 2 burgers.....we just couldn't bare the buffet anymore!!

The location isn't great unfortunately, you are miles away from anything! We walked for about an hour along the beach to get to Lagos which although was quaint and quirky.....there wasn't a fat lot there. The trains are €1.40 to get to Lagos but the trains are about once every 5 hours.....no exaggeration.....the reception will book you a taxi but the cost to the town which is around 5-10 mins is €10!!
One day we caught the train in the opposite direction to Lagos, about 3 or 4 stops away there is a great shopping mall! There was HNM, Zara, Sephora ect and a few Portugeese stores, it's was a day out to say the least as there's not a great deal to do around Lagos! Every first Saturday of the month Lagos have a market which is highly publisised.....don't bother going, it's rubbish! If you have ideas of a Farmers Market like we did you will be mistaken! The stalls are of knock off "designer" gear, old ladies underwear, house hold items....you see my point ?!

I hope others find our review helpful. I guess the only way to get anywhere at this hotel is to badger the reception staff.....and maybe the Thompson rep into doing her job. My advice is to go to your welcome meeting.....we didn't have one so this wasn't an option for us. The thing we miss about this hotel is the amazing shower and massive bed. Everything else was average. You need a fair bit of money to go with to make this place work well for you and give you the comforts you want. It's not a cheap place to stay at....the drinks are steep....but the red wine is well worth it though!

I have stayed in this hotel twice. The service was awful the first time when they had just opened. I gave this hotel a second chance and it was even worse. Even though it is a great hotel with a great location in Meia Praia, the service is the worst. I wrote a complaint form and it made no effect. I wrote to the director of the hotel after the stay and he has not replied to my email. I would not recommend this hotel if you want to be treated like in a 5 star hotel.

We stay here in September for a week in the sun. The hotel is very contemporary modern, which we liked about it. The room we had was amazing, with seperate shower unit, toliet, free standing bath and twin sinks. All was very high standards and we paid extra for a sea view room which we were happy with.

The room itself was perfect but the hotel does have some minor issues. The planks around the pool have warped and we did notice a few people 'stumble'. The pool on the ground floor we didn't use but did notice that it's in a bad state (the floor of the pool is warped and bubbled).

Also the location of the hotel is quite isolated and further from the sea than we originally thought but this wasn't an issue for us. WIFI was very hit and miss. The food was good and the food staff friendly however reception staff were hit and miss. Some were very polite, helpful and friendly, while others seemed to have their priorities wrong.

Although a great holiday we did expect more from this hotel as it's classed as a five star (in reality it's more 4 star - in our opinion)

Hotel:
The hotel itself is very modern and clean. We made use of the indoor pool as it was warmer than the two outdoor pools. The use of the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna is charged at 11 euros for 2 people. the gym was adequate but not air conditioned. There were always plenty of comfy sun loungers with pillows available all day. However it is not exactly "on the beach" as the thomson brochure says it is about a 15 minute walk across a road and train track and down a long wooden path. Although once you get there the beach is gorgeous and there are some expensive water sports available when it is not too windy. The entertainment in the hotel is average offering yoga, cocktail making, wine tasting (at a charge) etc. the evening entertainment is two lads one who sings along to a backing track whilst the other attempts to play the guitar, they are ok but they felt a bit amateur.

Area:
The hotel sticks out like a sore thumb in the area and for this reason didnt feel very safe, especially as the "security" doors in to the hotel are both broken. The area is pretty run down, a lot of graffittii and nothing around except a couple of beach "restaurants" and a "shop" (mans house) which has the essentials you need as the hotel rips you off, eg the hotel charges 3.50 for a single bottle of water and it is 4.60 for 6 bottles at the shop. Lagos is a 4 minute train ride which is
1.40 but the times are not that convenient. Or a good 40 minute walk which was too much in the heat for us. Lagos itself is again a run down rustic, quiet fishing village, which we felt lacked charm. We did go to zoo marine which is highly recommended if you want a fun day out, you can see dolphin and sea lion shows with some funny armature dramatics thrown in.

Room:
Our room was beautiful, it overlooked the pool and the sea, the bath is in the room with a separate shower both of which are amazing. The only down side to the room we felt was that the bed was extremely hard which hurt our backs.

Food:
Breakfast at the hotel had a good selection but was exactly the same everyday. Full English, fruit, came real, pastries, fresh juice and champagne. When it came to lunch you could pay to dine in the snack bar which will set you back 7 euro for a baguette and 4.50 for some chips. Or the Italian "fresca" which offers pizza, pasta and salads. Dinner at the buffet is extremely limited it is the smallest buffet I have seen at a 5* hotel. Day to day there is one pasta dish, two different overcooked meats usually accompanied by prunes or gravy, fish which is not bad and over cooked vegetables. There is also a range of cheese and salad. Although you can swap your dinner free of charge any night if the week for the Italian restaurant which we did most nights, without this option we would have been starving. Drinks at the hotel are pricey, magners 7 euro, fresh orange juice 6 euro, everyone queues for "happy hour and a half ".

We would not return to this hotel which is a shame because with a few improvements it would be gorgeous. If you are over 50, do not wish to leave the hotel and have lots if money, this place is for you.

The hotel was smart, very clean modern and fun. Classed as 5 star and it was except for the food quality. There was plenty of food, breakfast a very good choice and the standard fine. Dinner was only 3 star at best, certainly could be improved on. They know this though as the standard of there restaurant next door was 5 star. Its a pity to have paid in the UK as I certainly would not have done so if I had known before we left. The best thing to do if not pay for the poor evening meal that comes as a package, mind you an expensive package, but to pay once you are at the hotel and dine in the 5 star restaurant that you should be eating in anyway as that is what youve paid for. Somewhere along the line the hotel is obviously not recieving the funds to do the job properly or the holiday companys believe we are stupid enough to believe 3 is 5 star?

Room Tip: We had a pool view room, ground level which gave us an added advantage of a large terrance and huge...
