“great view on the Bay of Lagos”

You will find the statue standing on an excellent viewpoint. Sao Goncalo is a Portuguese saint, patron of fishermen. Just go there to take some photos on a sunny day.

“Very nice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

It may be uninteresting looking but apart from all of the statues in the city, I think this one is one of the best I have ever seen!

“Nice viewpoint on the square”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

Besides its local, historical background, there is nothing much special about this statue. The square where it stands offers a nice viewpoint on the old fort below and the Bay of Lagos. It is at a walking distance to the city walls and the old city.

“The centre of a large square”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

Massive statue facing the sea & in the middle of a large sqaure in the Old Town. Large fountain area in front, with the Parish Church & Old Slave Market at both sides.

“History of Lagos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2014

Well, I read the inscription and then bought a second hand book in Portuguese about Sao Goncalo. Turns out he was a fisher boy and became a well loved priest- symbol, 3 entwined fishes. Though my Portuguese is not good yet so I may be wrong, perhaps he was a bishop.
