Vilabranca Apartments

Reviewed 30 October 2011

Just spent a lovely 6 nights at Vilabranca. The complex is just the right size, with well kept gardens and two pools. We had a one bedroom apartment and was furnished in typical holiday apartment style i.e. solid pine 3pce suite and dining table etc. Yes it had an old fashioned CRT television, I would say approx. 20" screen, but it had a good choice of satellite channels available including ITV, BBC etc for those that want that type of thing.

We ate out for lunches and dinner, however the kitchen had everything that could be needed, including a combi microwave/grill. Yes an electric kettle would have been nice, however the stove top one served its purpose perfectly well for what we required.

The beds were comfortable and the bathroom a very good size. Everything in the apartment was very clean and despite only being there for 6 nights the apartment was cleaned and bed linen and towels changed twice.

As for the staff, they were all very friendly and efficient. We had a power failure during one night caused by heavy rain shorting an outside connection. One phone call to reception at 8.30am and we were told the person to deal with this was due in at 9am and would be there straight away. I had already identified the problem trip/fuse and isolated it, but at 9.10am the guy was there to fix it. To the person who complained about cigarette ends on the balcony, yes they ought to have been cleaned up, but come on it would have taken you all of 30 seconds to do it yourself and is not worth worrying about.

As for location, we found it a nice walk into town and there were some nice local bars/restaurants in the area to break the walk back uphill.

Vilabranca will definitely be on our list of places to stay when we next visit Lagos.

We stayed as a couple with grown up children - we booked 3 rooms and got 3 enormous one bedded apartments with the following: lounge/diner, kitchen, bathroom, twin-bedded bedroom plus balcony/terrace. For a holiday let we thought they were quite well equipped. The beds and settee were comfortable. The kitchen had a hob kettle and a coffee maker, a full-sized cooker, a toaster and a large fridge/freezer plus sufficent plates, cutlery etc. The TV was a fair size for a holiday let and had 10 English speaking channels. Wi-fi was available in the bar if you wanted it for a nominal charge - the kids had it and I think it was 5 euro for a week. The only extra we had to pay for was the safe which was 15 euro. Air con was included. The rubbish was collected 3 times while we were there at 6.30am so that was annoying, but at all other times it was very peaceful there. On the first morning 2 of the 3 apartments had lots of ants in their bathrooms - we reported this and it was dealt with and did not recur. We spent quite a lot of time sitting on the sun loungers, but had lilos on them - they were made of fabric and quite hard to sit on otherwise. There were plenty of parasols. The pool (mid October) was pretty chilly but we still swam. The sea was about the same temp. We booked bed and breakfast and had we known what was for brekkie we wouldn't have bothered - we got tea or coffee and orange juice, lovely fresh rolls with butter, jam and honey and cheese and ham and sometimes fruit, but nothing cooked. We had a hire car so used this to go to the beach. There was an infrequent minibus provided. We walked to town but that was a fair way. Best beaches for body boarding - Zavial and Castelejo. Best restaurant - Chiccas in Luz. Every review seems to mention No Patio - it was, in our view, good but not excellent. Don't go to Dom Luis unless you like undercooked Piri Piri Chicken (yes they did cook it some more when asked but that shouldn't be necessary). As well as the supermarket just outside the complex there is an Intermarche 10 mins walk away which has lots of stuff to buy.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room and got 501 which was at the end of a building so it was close to the bins...

Well I have to agree with comments from other travellers who stayed here. Good points; v clean apartment, nice walk to town, lovely small supermarket next door, lots of white clean towels in our apartment, 2 lovely pools with v nice sunloungers etc, lovely gardens v well maintained. Not so good; staff while polite etc appeared rather disinterested when help was needed, we had to ask for our bedroom balcony to be cleaned as there were cigarette butts there from previous occupants, we also mentioned our living room terrace badly needed to be washed down it was quite grotty , but nothing was done. But while our living room was lovely and clean it was v sparsley furnished with 2 absolutely grubby, sagging sofas. I really couldn't bear to sit on them, so I covered one with a bedspread from my room, and only then would I use it. The duplex which was really nice ,clean, and spacious was totally spoilt by the furniture and it would not be acceptable even in a 1 star! The tv was a tiny portable one which was v strange. Beds appeared comfortable but boy was my back sore by about day 3! .I did as was suggested by another reviewer, and put a spare blanket under the sheet. This made the difference. All in all I would probably return, but next time I would book through vilabranca owners direct. This might mean I would get a better equipped apartment.

Room Tip: I dont know that they listen. I asked for a room overlooking pool and this was ignored!

I booked a package with Thomas Cook who I thinkbooked it with Jet2 Hols....you always get loaded for single travel but I didnt feel too ripped off when I saw the apartment. I had a 1 bed duplex which was really really spacious with a terrace and 1F overlooking the pool. Bathroom could have done with a bit of a refresher having a few cracked tiles and the shower curtain had spots of mold and the shower mat was mouldy underneath - for the cost of replacements of both of these items it would have made a difference. Overall though it was a really nice stay and generally the apartment was fine with cable tv (slightly outdated small tv but at least it had one). I agree with other comments on the friendly helpful staff there and despite the above negatives I would stay there again for its equidistance from beach and town whilst offering a peaceful and relaxing location in a well kept pleasant environment. Not to mention budget overall good value for money. Big downer was when someone took occupation next door and he snored like a tank!!!! the reception showed me the only altnernative 1 bed apt which was way smaller than the duplex I had so they offered me a fold up bed to put downstairs which worked! The snoring eventually stopped but the noise insulation a bit thin....

Room Tip: Duplex apartments have less neighbours and with noise insulation a bit lacking it would make a big d...

We stayed in Vilabranca for a week and have just returned. Really nice spacious apartment with a maid service three times a week - overlooking a lovely garden - apartments are missing an electric kettle but other than that, no complaints.Staff helpful and friendly.
There is a supermarket across the road, some really beautiful beaches within walking distance. It is also just a short walk into town . Nice and quiet and overall, made for an excellent holiday! Would highly recommend it in terms of value for money and great location.

Very nice complex and the twin beds were excellent - the air-con was also a nice facility to have. Only additions we would have liked in the kitchen:
1) A microwave.
2) An electric kettle instead of the antiquated tin whistling kettle with a broken spout cover which was supplied. Incidentally, it must cost them so much more in electricity the time it takes to boil a kettle on the electric hotplate as against a modern electric kettle.
Whilst the complex is in a very pleasant residential area the hills make it for hard work walking especially returning from anywhere in town or the beaches.

We stayed at Vilabranca the first week in October and were really pleased with our accommodation. We had a ground floor apartment at the pool away from the Reception and Bar. Our balcony looked out on to the pool and lovely gardens, we had flowers hanging down in to our balcony area which was beautiful.
The apartments are very spacious and have everything you would need. Our only small complaint from the entire holiday is our fridge was on it's last legs. You couldn't change the temperate and the icebox door was broken and kept falling down (just a minor thing considering everything else was spot on). We managed fine for the week with it.
The quieter pool is really beautiful and wasn't too cold to swim in - I managed to get in every day which is unlike me! There were always loads of sun loungers to choose from and it was so relaxing and quiet there you couldn't have asked for it to be more relaxing.
We walked to two different beaches and preferred the one which you have to climb down steep steps to. It was stunning there (it's next to Porto de Mos beach but I can't remember the name of it). We weren't so keen on Porto de Mos beach as it was quite "touristy" for us (we like the really rustic places).
Plenty of great restaurants nearby - we never eat at the same place twice but went to Triangulao 3 times! The Sole with banana was absolutely delicious and very reasonable at around 10 Euros. We also ate in town a couple of nights and weren't disappointed in anything served. We always stopped off at Penguim pizzeria/bar across the road from Vilabranca - just down from the supermarket. It was really nice sitting outside there (only 3.5 Euro for a large beer and red wine). I always had a bowl of black olives there and they were delicious! They served nice snacks during the day and their evening menu looked nice as well - we'd have eaten there had we more time.
All in all it was a perfect, relaxing holiday with glorious weather the entire week. We loved it!

Room Tip: I would ask for a room looking on to the pool away from the reception - was a really nice view from...
