Stayed at Villa Termal for 4 nights, absolutely loved it, staff at pool bar and tapas bar were so friendly' offering fresh fruit during morning and evening.
Rooms were spotless cleaned everyday.
Water aerobics available 2 mornings a week and Zumba 2 evenings a week.
The live entertainment at weekends at restaurant 1692 was fantastic.
Can't fault it at all, loved every moment will definitely be returning in the future.

The hotel is located in a beautiful green valley, far away from all the tourist crowds. It is the perfect spot to relax! The garden around the swimming-pool is very well looked after and it is great to spend your day there! Even in August and during the high season, you can relax and enjoy! The location is also great because it is not a long drive from the hotel to the South coast, nor to the West coast.
In the Villa Termal where we stayed, breakfast was served on the fourth floor and it was possible to sit outside on a very nice terrace!
However, I would like to point out:
- we stayed in the part of the hotel complex called Villa Termal, just next to the factory that is producing the mineral water "Monchique". The water pumps of the factory can be heard all day and night and it is impossible to sleep with an open window (which would have been perfect in the green valley!), so you will have to keep the windows closed and the air-conditioning on all day and night.
When we booked the hotel, we were not aware of the different buildings in the hotel complex. So when you are booking it might be worthwhile to check in which part of the hotel complex your room will be located, there seem to be big differences in quality and quietness.
- there were lots of ants in the room (between corridor and bathroom), which we pointed out to the receptionist. She came and sprayed the room and said she would check again the next day and we could change the room if it stays the same.
The ants were back the next day and we pointed it out again to another receptionist, which did not seem to be aware of the problem. She noted it down but nothing changed.
We also did not insist to change the room, as we were not too worried about the ants, but if somebody is allergic or just does not want to have ants in the room, please ask beforehand.
- There was no hair dryer in the bathroom, the shower cubicle was tiny and not up to the standard of this hotel.
- No WiFi in rooms.
- The coffee at breakfast was a real disappointment.
- On the first night we had dinner in the hotel's restaurant on a beautiful terrace under old trees. The location was excellent but the value for money of the food was not good, it was well over-prized.

Advice:
Just down the road (when coming up from Portimao, just before getting to the roundabout) there is a nice little restaurant and souvenir shop. In this restaurant you can sit on the terrace overlooking the whole valley with the buildings of Portimao in the distance. The food is excellent and the prices, too!

All in all we had a wonderful time there, due to the natural location of the hotel, its surroundings, gardens, swimming-pool area, service, and we would also book it again! However, I think the hotel is sometimes not up to the standard that it pretends to be.

Room Tip: Ask in which part of the hotel complex you will stay and try to avoid rooms that have the window tow...

A 2 day stay at villa termal revealed a beautiful hideaway in the mountains, howevever the restaurant service and the spa in general was a bit of a let down. Good value ultimately so definitely worth a visit with some expectation management.

We recently stayed at Villa Termal Monchique for a couple of nights to break up our coastal holiday in Portugal. The setting is beautiful and idyllic, nestled in a small and pretty town. Our room was located in the old part of the town, overlooking the central square of the hotel - around which the restaurant and evening activities took place. The room was pleasant, however it lacked some basic amenities we should have expected to find such as an ironing board, a working safe (ours had the lock removed) and a decent hair dryer. There were also no coffee or tea making facilities in the room.

The restaurant in the square is the main venue for eating, and whilst the food was good the service was disappointing. On numerous occasions our food arrived before our drinks, and it was frustrating to have to clear our own table a number of times when the waiter arrived hands full with our next course and we had not yet finished our starters. Breakfast was functional and adequate, although the layout and the single beverage machine made it a bit of a battle at peak times. The coffee machine wasn't working properly and there were many annoyed guests.

We utilised the spa on the second day and the functional white spa building, that sits slightly apart from the main square and gardens, seems a little at odds with the old town beauty that is reflected in the villa itself. We booked a number of treatments throughout the afternoon, and had mixed experiences. The aqua massage seemed a little brusque and amateurish and the foot massage was pleasant but seemed to lack real skill or expertise. This was a theme that continued throughout our final full massage, and we were left with the distinct impression that the staff were perhaps not fully qualified in their areas of work in the spa.

However, despite some of our frustrations we had a lovely time and especially enjoyed relaxing in the garden around the pool. Although it is a spa I would note that there are more children than you would expect, probably due to the fact we went in August. This unfortunately spoilt the tranquil settings.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying at Villa Termal, however it is not as professional as some of the spa resorts we have been to before. It is good value however, so I would imagine some expectation management would be useful when you book!

The atmosphere of peace, old-style living and refreshing environment make this beautiful, hidden secret a perfect holiday get-away. The spa, the restaurant, the service, the local 'chouriço' bread, the gurgling of running streams - a gem.

On the approach into this village resort your breath is taken away by its beauty...the pool setting was amazing , so lovely to have cool grass under your feet. The pool was spotless every day, grass was cut weekly and the scent of the many flowers and variety of butterflies makes this the most enchanting and beautiful pool I have ever visited.
The girls at the pool bar were charming and so friendly - every day they came around with a different little treat withr in the mornings or afternoons - offering fresh pineapple or melon on skewers, baskets of giant green apples and small tubs of ice cream - a lovely touch and much appreciated. Fresh "sunshine " yellow towels were available from the pool bar each day in exchange for vouchers given on arrival - these smelt so fresh and again another great facility.
Rooms were very clean and cleaned daily to same standard as if you'd just arrived, with free bottles of Monchique water - we stayed in the Spa Hotel and the waft of various oils and incence at the reception area and at the entrance to the Spa was lovely.
Fabulous continental breakfast offered daily, which could be taken on the very large terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding trees.
The facility of an honesty bar in the hotels is a rare thing, and again a nice touch.
Tapas bar was good but the 1691 Restaurant in the square was so disappointing - service very slow , on one ocassion we asked for 2 small beers whilst looking at the menus we had been given - we waited 25 minutes then decided to leave as we seemed to have been forgotten about.
The Barbecue buffet they had at 25 euros per person would have been good value if the food was hot - there was a great selection but at 9 pm all the food was cold - not even warm - all the burners had gone out under the silver domed dishes , and before we had even finished what we had selected for our main course , the deserts were being cleared away - ourselves and other diners were not approached and asked if we would like anything before taking deserts away ( ice cream has also melted ) - staff seem oblivious to customer service - it seemed they were keen to clear and go home .As part of the 25 euros a jug of Sangria was included we we couldn't drink as it was laced with cinnamon ? - and was very sickly .
On another occasion we had to wait 20 minutes before getting a menu and a further 25 mins to be served. we both ordered the pasta and this also arrived cold again.
A good restaurant manager could sort this restaurant out - there was plenty of staff but many occasions there were no staff available and trying to catch their attention became tedious - there should always be a member of waiting staff in the square at all times - and someone to go around to see if everything is ok - would keep more customers - as after giving this place the benefit of the doubt - we then ate every night at the Albergaria Do Lageado just up from the square. This place served traditional Portugese food , was fantastic value for money ,and was superb - HOT delicious food with great flavours - a friendly small restaurant with only 1 member of staff serving who would put all the staff of 1691 restaurant to shame - we were served with warmth and courtesy and was so pleased to see us return. House wine at 5 euros very good and great value. We were never kept waiting - and on 1 evening the lady serving had 38 people in at once - and nobody was kept waiting .
Shellfish Rice was FANTASTIC - served in large casserole dish with lid to keep food hot after each serving.
In fact it makes you wonder why 1691 Restaurant also charges such high prices , we presumed it was for the setting.Talking to other travellers they also felt the same .
There is also an open air cinema in square 2 nights a week - free of charge - which we enjoyed
The nights were lovely and cool and we didn't need the air con - which was fab.
The bread served in all the village restaurants / hotels is freshly made in the village resort in a large outdoor oven near the Tapas bar - amazing to watch and makes one very hearty cheese and ham toasty from the Tapas bar .
Oh, and so worth a mention, are the smoked salmon sandwiches, with cream cheese and egg, served on brown bread which are served at the pool bar - a FABULOUS lunch time treat.
Staff at reception will print you off bus times to Monchique and Portimao - but there is a very limited service ( last bus back from Monchique is at 5.30pm) and if going to Monchique it is as cheap for 2 people to travel by Taxi - which reception will gladly order for you.cost is approx 8/9 euros to monchique.
Frankly having ventured out of our "village paradise" we couldn't wait to get back - so peaceful - lovely calm atmosphere and such beautiful surroundings.
There is no doubt we will return next year , delighted to have stayed here , was a superb holiday experience.
Thanks to those who made it so special.

Georgina & Lawrence xx

Estalagem Dom lourenco is a Romantic depandance hotel of the Complex Termal Services of Villa Termal Hotel in Caldas the Monchique. It was the first time holiday with my wife in Algarve and it was very pleasure to stay in a so beautifull location with Great Service of SPA and Top Chef Restaurant 1692 with very friendly Professional Staff.
I would like to advice it to all visitors of Algarve absolutely with rent a car, from this strategical and very good location you have many tourist goals to go in a few time (Famous Beach in Portimao,Lagos,Lagoa,Aljezur).
