I stayed at the hotel with my father and brother on a four night golf trip in June. We were greeted wih a glass of port upon entering the hotel, all very civilised. The hotel certainly has the feel of quality. The rooms were good, obviously pool view would be better than mountain view, but it costs a fair bit extra.

The pool area and grounds are wonderful. No problem getting sun loungers and umbrellas, great service with towels and cushions brought out to you.

The golf course is fantastic. I've played Vale de Lobo, Old Course, Laguna, Vila Sol, Pinhal, and Millennium, and this course is at least equal to all of those, even the Old Course. If I was being picky, a few of the tees aren't level enough and the bunkers aren't raked every morning meaning that the sand can be hard after watering and difficult to play out of, but it's a great course, particularly holes 9 and 18.

You should take golf clubs as hiring costs around £35 a day.

Obviously the food and drinks in the hotel are pricey. Didn't eat evening meals there so can't comment. Had lunch in the Spikes bar after each round which was really nice. Tip: ask for the golfers food vouchers at the Pro Shop after your round and you get a good deal on your lunch there.

Ate in Alvor each evening. Only 8 Euros in a taxi. Lovely harbour with wonderful restaurants. The grilled fish was spectacular in most of them. Not rowdy at all, very pleasant indeed.

The private beach is lovely too.

All in all a great golf trip. Booked with Golfbreaks and got a pretty good deal.

Maybe not quite 5 stars, but not far off.

Well worth a visit, we'll definitely be returning.

We stayed for a one week in Penina playing golf for 5 days. Its 24 years since I last stayed at the hotel. Unfortunately and despite some recent renovations I feel the hotel is simply not deserving of its 5 star rating. Our rooms in attic spaces where a very odd layout indeed with stepped dias platforms holding desk and chairs; and, balconies that would not hold more than one person at a time.

The staff are however excellent with their usual Portuguese good grace and easy charm. The restaurant food leaves much to be desired both in quality and value. Avoid the buffet if you have the choice.

The golf course was in good condition but it no longer represents a real challenge compared to other courses on the Algarve.

The nearby town of Alvor is a bit disappointing and full of expensive little bars with little local colour or atmosphere compared to 20 odd years ago. I suppose thats progress....

All in all a disappointing break and sorry to say I would not return to the Hotel instead seeking better value elsewhere.

I made my reservation on booking.com, but needed some changes to the booking, for which I contacted the reservations manager at the hotel via email. She wa extremely helpful & her responses was instant and efficient. The hotel was very nice, but with nothing outstanding about it. Reception staff were nice, restaurant staff were nice, everything was good, but nothing great. I asked for a firm pillow, but they did not have any. This was a problem for me. Also the meal we had in the restaurant one night was very average. I had roast beef from the trolley. The beef was ok, but the gravy was made from bisto gravy granules.

All the amenities of a 5 star hotel in a quiet section of Algarve. This hotel is very comfortable with clean & nice rooms, good service and excellent large pool, great location for tanning. This golf resort is definitely for the older, golfing crowd. As a couple in their early 30's that's NOT into partying, this hotel was a calming change, compared to the other Albufeira resorts in the Algarve. Median age for this hotel was 60's complete with a snooker table and all. Gym was small and there was no jacuzzi. The buffet food was not extraordinary but acceptable. If you are looking for a high end quiet resort, than this is it. The nearby 3 brothers beach was out of this world and should be on every tourists agenda. The views were amazing and breath taking!

We've stayed twice now, family with 7yr and 4yr old (and 1 golfer) and everyone loves it. The Penguin Club is fantastic - welcoming and caring staff who even claimed to remember us the following year! The golf courses are spectacular. We had junor suites both times and frankly don't understand why people say they are 'tired', they are traditionally styled and comfortable. The food is also excellent and the staff very good. The pool is cold, and the area around the pool gets very full, very quickly (with magazines and towels strategically placed to snare beds, but last time we went they were a lot tougher on those bed hoggers), but the beach is a good alternative. We'd love to go back but the prices have gone up again so school holidays are now out of our budget!

Just spent 4 nights at penina, and the hotel was great. The championship course was in fantastic condition, with the greens some of the best i have ever played on. There were some really tough holes, but we had great fun working our way around a fantastic layout. The resort course was nice and less demanding.
We had a room overlooking the pool and gardens, which had been recently upgraded, all clean and serviced daily by an excellent house keeping team. Be aware of the mini bar....... unbelievable prices.
Breakfast in the hotel was first rate, plenty of choices, but we decided to try some local restaurants in the evenings, i would highly recommend the Ruccola in Alvor, and Restaurante y Forga in Lagos, both served great food in a relaxed atmosphere.
